Title: Night out in London, what shall I do?
Post by: DaveShoelace on June 15, 2009, 06:48:39 PM
One of my Pokernews buddies is coming over to London (he is Canadian) for a few days and we are going out for a night on the town on Friday. The thing is (and this is a good thing, because Im a lightweight) he doesnt really drink, so my usual plan of 'lets get pissed' might not be best.

So Im trying to make the night a bit varied, I was thinking taking him round leciester square, camden, soho just for a few quiet drinks and maybe to the comedy store for their late show.

What else can we do? He is 29 like me and I presume he doesnt want to see any pole dancers, so what else is cool in London for tourists?

Dont actually want to do anything poker related, we talk shop every day and that would be a busmans holiday for us.

Tate Modern is open late on Friday, if you fancy art and that. You can then walk along the river afterwards.

On the other hand if you don't want an evening that sounds like a date with a French exchange student then the Comedy Store is a good shout.

Camden is a shithole.

Can't think of anything specific off the top of my head but check out the time out website, that'll tell you what's going on in Lomdon this Friday.

Comedy store imo - make sure you book tickets in advance as they often sell out well before.

Don't under any circumstances let those people who stand around leicester square leafletting persuade you to go to one of the comedy shows in the thistle hotel down the road. It's more funny at a funeral.

Hi Sushi in Camden is excellent for food.

Hi Sushi in Camden is excellent for food.

Sushi is not food, it's pretentious overpriced pap that would benefit enormously from a coating of breadcrumbs, a quick dip in a deep fat fryer, and an 80% reduction in price

Barry mentioned Camden....anywhere there for food isn't going to be the cheapest but Hi is actually very reasonable.

Where have you had Sushi before Tom for you to have such a low opinion of it?

Strangely now you've mentioned it I've never been to a sushi place and seen a woman preparing the food. Why's that?

Yeah but not Greek chefs as the men would have to wear "all-over-body hairnets"

By that criteria, you would make a great chef.

For sushi in Camden the Bento place next to the jazz cafe is a better bet.

If Red-Dog's sushi smells like a whore's moneybox then he's either paid too little for his sushi or too much for his whores.

:( :( I will never be able to eat sushi again without thinking of this. vg tho :D

I went to a Sushi bar recently but me and the bird sat there for half an hour waiting for the waiter, before complaining. Eventually manager came up and explained 'no restaurant, is fast food, have to grab from carousel'. Total ****ing farce.

Covent Garden is a nice hangout, or maybe the theatre.

women dont make sushi because there hands are too warm compared to the mans
and warm hands will affect the fish taste texture etc etc

Loads of different types, and the quality of what you can get varies dramatically.

The quality of the sushi depends on a number of things.  If you're having sushi with fish, the sashimi (the raw fish) needs to be fresh, and this makes a world of difference.  So it's like any other food, you get good ingredients and you're half-way there. Then there's the rice, which needs to be prepared well (but it's not really rocket science).

Then there are the different varieties of sashimi - my favourites are the standard tuna (maguro), sea bream (tai), octopus (tako) and in my opinion the best sushi is the fatty tuna (toro) - which is often the most expensive as well.  Good sushi is amongst the best food I've ever had.

It's utter crap.  So is M&S sushi.  It's like comparing a ready-made microwave meal to a meal in a restaurant.

Terry, is there actually any fish in the Tesco sushi?  It looks like egg and vegetable sushi to me.  Maybe some tinned tuna in there?

They have 5 or 6 options.

It has crossed my mind to ask you - where would you recommend in the UK for good sushi?

Particularly London as that's where I go most often which is likely to have somewhere, but anywhere really - just in case I have the chance if I'm around those locations.

I think London is your best bet in the UK.  To be honest, I don't get to London too often, and have only had sushi there a few times.  There's a good place in Ealing Broadway - can't remember what it's called.  Not a huge variety there, but it was good stuff (and full of Japanese people, if that means anything).

You're probably best to do a search on google for places that are recommended.  Monkey matt or sharplea will be able to help you with the googling...

There's a good place in Holborn as well as a few nice ones in Camden.

It's utter crap.  So is M&S sushi.  It's like comparing a ready-made microwave meal to a meal in a restaurant.

Ian, is there actually any fish in the Tesco sushi?  It looks like egg and vegetable sushi to me.  Maybe some tinned tuna in there?

dunno never touched the uncooked stuff

Oh you should, it's the best stuff (not from Tesco ldo).

Norrrrrrrrrrr dont even eat cooked fish let alone uncooked....

Really?

I went to a Frankie and Benny's a few weeks ago while I was waiting for a train and it was awesome.

2 courses, about a dozen coffees and for not very much more than the cost of a big McDonalds lunch.

Was it busy - could that be the main difference?

I've only been to 2 in total, so it's hard to say whether they were unusually good or yours was unusually bad.

Shows the danger in basing your opinion of a chain on 1 or 2 outlets then

oh and while we're on shit restaurants.....

Last time but one we were up in Nottingham, Matt and I decided to stop for lunch on the way home at the Baltimore exchange bar and grill opposite the holiday inn.  Lots of advertising outside for two meals for £7.95.  We go in and try to order from the 'two for £7.95' menu, only to be told it's not available that day as it's a bank holiday Monday.  Thinking we must have misread the signs outsiide, we order from the main menu.  Shortly afterwards, we overhear a group of women at the next table asking to speak to the manager.  They've also just been told they can't order off the cheap menu, but say the signs outside clearly say that the two for £7.95 deal advertised outside clearly states 'now all day, every day'.  I pop out for a fag to check it out.  Indeed the sign does say the deal is now available all day, every day, with no small print.  I then clock the manager and a mate of his taking down big signs up on the roadside which obviously say the same thing.

we ordered a mixed starter to share - it was ok.  For main course I ordered a steak.  It was horrible.  Not cooked how I'd ordered, completely tasteless, and texture of cardboard.  The accompanying chips were ok, the coleslaw a teaspoon sized lump and nothing like the very appetising looking coleslaw on the menu.  The waiting staff didn't take the time to ask us how the food was (probably too embarrassed) and didn't bat an eyelid or say a word when they collected my plate with 3/4 of the steak untouched.  We didn't have dessert.  Bill came to £35.

Don't go there.

THIS.

The 'kaitenzushi' - the revolving conveyor belt sushi restaurants are a Japanese equivalent of fast food.  Still, some of the sushi that you can get at them surpasses anything I've had in the UK.  The founder of Yo Sushi took an idea that was already common in Japan and tried to pass it as innovative in the UK.  I guess it is innovative in the UK.  Shame he didn't go as far as making sure the sushi was good as well.

Higoi....now that sounds like a good idea!  http://higoi.co.uk/pages/Menu.html  - not cheap though, so I reckon we'll need to play credit card roulette again with the clown and get him to pay.

The simple reason that there aren't many female sushi chefs in Japan, is because it's always been a male-dominated industry and women aren't given a chance to do it.  Simple as.

yeah but i wouldn't have been so bothered if it had only cost me £4 - as it was I paid about £13 for that lump of shite.  In fact, I don't think the steak was on the cheapo menu.
