Title: RSQ31 - Everyone join in!
Post by: Cf on August 21, 2009, 02:18:52 PM
The RSQ has been declining in numbers recently. Hopefully everyone can make an effort to join in with this one :)

Welcome to RSQ31. For those who haven't played before this is a good chance to get some practice at the format in before bB8, where there will be a live version of this quiz.

The idea is simple. PM me an answer to each question. All the questions are quite easy, but with some not so obvious answers. Your score for each question is the amount of people who selected the same answer. So you want to avoid obvious answers. But if an answer is super obvious you might want to use it because no-one else will use it because it's too obvious. Or whatever. The most common answer is called the sheep answer.

You may pass TWO questions. You score 0 for each question you pass. This is good, so be sure to use both passes, even if you can answer all questions. Note that you can't pass question 11.

If you get a question wrong then you will score the sheep score + 2.

The reveal will take place in this thread at 19:30, Tuesday 1st September. During the reveal we will see who answered what and score the quiz. If you wish to object to an answer then feel free. I'll review the objection and give you a decision.

The winner of the quiz has the honour of either hosting the next RSQ themselves, or nominating someone else to do it.

Any questions, post to this thread.

Deadlines for submission: 19:30, Tuesday 1st September. Good luck!

QUESTIONS

1. Name a circular road traffic sign which has a white background and a red circular border. Must be in the highway code.

2. Name a non-numeric button found on a standard, non-scientific, calculator. Source: Windows Vista calculator.

3. Name a song by The Beatles whose title includes a person's name.

4. Name a position in association football.

5. Name a rock or metal band whose name begins with a vowel. Must be quite well known. If I haven't heard of them myself I would expect to find a wikipedia article or some sort of professional review etc. Your mate's band who plays down the pub probably doesn't count.

6. Name a state in the USA whose name consists of more than one word.

7. Name something you might expect to find in a bathroom. NOTE: non-ace answers will incur a 2 point penalty.

8. Name a state of matter.

9. Name a video game featuring Sonic the Hedgehog.

10. Name one of the red brick universities.

11. TIE BREAKER - Give me an interesting fact. The fact can be about anything. In the event of a tie at the end of the quiz the most interesting fact wins. Objections to facts in the reveal are allowed. If a fact turns out to be incorrect you will incur a 2 point penalty. Not giving a fact also gets a 2 point penalty.

12. Name a Star Wars film.

I'll be at the_duke's on Wednesday.  Not sure, but think he's having a home game.  If he is, doubt we'll be here for the reveal.  Oooooooor, we could multi-task in which case...expect carnage!!!

great idea in theory. in practice however it's likely most of them won't be interesting and the ones that are won't be facts

The followers of Pythagoras considered that all even numbers were female and all odd numbers were male.

They did not consider 1 to be a number, the first male number was 3.

Hey guys.

Turns out I'm busy tonight, so in typical rsq farce style I'm going to have to move the reveal. I've set the date to next Tuesday instead.  Hope this is ok with everyone.

Anyone who hasn't entered yet: get some answers in! Will only take you 2 minutes to come up with some :)

Post by: kinboshi on August 26, 2009, 02:51:37 PM
Question 8 - are the answers all going to be whales, or are you looking for specifics?  If you're going to whale different answers, then there aren't many correct ones - so it might have to be a pass.

Title: Re: RSQ31 - Everyone join in!
Post by: Cf on August 26, 2009, 02:57:01 PM
There are not many answers to question 8. There are 3 obvious answers, and 3 not so obvious answers to my knowledge (or at least according to QI lol)

A couple of the questions have limited answers, but are perhaps more difficult.

Tactical usage of your 2 passes is recomended.

There are well over a dozen answers, but you might lump some together as whales (e.g. Sperm whale and Blue whale being the same answer for an aquatic mammal).  If you're going to do that, then I'll pass.

Depending on what you put it may well be whaled into a more suitable form. Take a punt, or just pass it :)

There isn't a more 'suitable' form.  It's one of the states of matter.  Anyway, if you're only going to allow 6 answers, then it doesn't matter (see what I did there?).

I'll just pass it.

Post by: Cf on August 26, 2009, 03:53:39 PM
Of course, just because I consider there to be 6 doesn't mean that I'm correct. Objections may be made.

But that would involve disagreeing with Stephen Fry..

Nope, because the facts don't get scored the same way. You either score 0 or 2. You score 2 if your fact is incorrect. It just won't do you much good in a tie break situation where I select the most interesting :)

Just a reminder to everyone that the reveal for this is tomorrow.

Anyone who plans on entering that hasn't yet, start getting your answers in :)

Anyone who wasn't planning on entering, why not? Take 2 minutes from your day to write some answers down and send them to me :)

2 minutes for the answers, but an entire evening for the reveal.

That's why I fell out with these things, nothing wrong with your questions tho.

You know when dogs or cats reach the point that it's not worth living any more their owners have the wonderful opportunity to put them to rest peacefully before they lose their dignity.

It may be time to put the RSQ to sleep.

Let it rest in peace before it loses it's dignity.

Now that the RSQ is about as popular as a dildo in a church why does it get stickied??

7 entrants so far. I'll go ahead with the reveal. Seeing as there's not many of us I won't bother compiling the answers beforehand so we'll do the scoring as we go along. I'll accept any late entries before we start the reveal if anyone who was planning on entering hasn't yet.

Compiling them beforehand is easier.  I did it on the fly last time out, and it's not easy.

There is a sign prohibiting motor vehicles, but not one specifically motor cycles. I don't recall seeing such a sign myself.

um, no it wouldn't. as far as i'm aware there are 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 MPH speed limit signs that are circular with a red border. Any one of those should be a valid answer in it's own right.

What justification for whaling these? Farce!

Also, 5, 10 and 70. I was a dual carriageway in Wales that kept alternating between national speed limit and 70, didn't quite get that.

Take also Height Limit or Weight Limit or Length Limit, I simply have to whale all the different numbers that get given on these.

kinboshi: As a reference to the rockumentary 'Spinal Tap', the volume control on the BBC iPlayer goes up to 11.

I always did wonder why it went to 11. And after looking up the rockumentary in question I see the whole goes to 11 thing.

However, I can't find anything on the BBC iPlayer site confirming that this is a reference. Unless you can offer some proof then I have to fail this.

But you can't claim this as fact without some quote from the BBC confirming it.

I didn't specifically ask for evidence, but I did ask for a fact. A fact will be proven somewhere in some manner. You should be able to show me this.

Having said that, I'm gonna pass it. It is 99% probably true, and I'll allow your conversation with a BBC person to carry some weight :)

Set question.

I see a few source stating superglass as a proposed state...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superglass (doesn't appear on list at bottom, has a link to article agreeing with the above)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_of_matter (listed as a proposed state)
Yes but did you check with Kinboshi's mate?

He's a developer at the BBC - hardly a good reference for the different states of matter!

I worked for 13 years at a Glass Company

My thought process for this question...

Was watching an episode of QI which states that there are 6 states: solid, liquid, gas, plasma, and two others condensate something.

Set question.

Start reading wikipedia etc and see all the different variations.

Higgs Boson Condensate?

Ok. Just redone the scores.

Found the error.

I accidently gave kinboshi a 2 point penalty for his fact instead of TightEnd. Then wondering why I hadn't given TightEnd the penalty added it to him without realising I gave it to kinboshi.

kinboshi - 9
dousche - 10
G1BTW - 13
TightEnd - 13
Claw75 - 14
The-Crow - 17
Shogun112 - 19

Ok. 5 minutes and we have the final question and results.

So, what may be the last online blonde RSQ comes to a close. I hope for those involved in this one it's been interesting. More fun still to come as TightEnd reads the rest of the thread and no doubt blows up later on.

Onto the final question:

QUESTION 12 - Name a Star Wars film.

SHEEP - Return of the Jedi - 2 points
Claw75
kinboshi

ACE - A New Hope - 1 point
dousche

ACE - The Empire Strikes Back - 1 point
The-Crow

PASS
G1BTW
TightEnd
Shogun112

Giving us final scores of:

kinboshi - 11
dousche - 11
G1BTW - 13
TightEnd - 13
Claw75 - 16
The-Crow - 18
Shogun112 - 19

Meaning our final RSQ winner is kinboshi. Congrats!

The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Kinks, all start with " THE"

Even the Black Crowes from 1992

Or The Counting crows from 1996

All start with " The "
