Derren Brown will attempt to predict the lottery results this Wednesday in the first episode of his new series, The Events.

The illusionist will broadcast live from a secret location and, in a television first, Channel 4 will show the event across its entire network on Channel 4, E4, More4, Film4 and 4 Music.

Following the live prediction, Derren will reveal on Friday 11th September at 9pm how he did it and how viewers at home can also do it.

Speaking about the stunt, he said: "I realise there are a lot of questions this brings up, and I hope they'll be answered on the Friday night show. For now, I'm really excited and really nervous and cannot tell you for sure how well it will work. Some things just have to be tried."

Derren's previous TV specials have included live Russian Roulette, a seance and a foolproof horse race gambling system.

He doesn't use the pieces of paper again so the first ball is a 4, He picks out the piece of paper with 4 on it. WOW he's done it. Next number out he has 48 pieces of paper to chose from it comes 27 he picks out the 27 and shows them he got it right again and moves on. He doesn't write all 6 numbers on one piece of paper. That's just my guess anyway.

ok, how did he do all of that stuff?

Derren is live at the start in the side room, but the footage of him walking into the room and until the end of the draw is pre-recorded. He knows from previous draws how the lottery works, what order the draw is in, the guy wears a white glove, they press a red button, he also knows the name of the draw master from the TV guides. The draw is very scripted by BBC as they have such a small window to broadcast.

He is filmed earlier in the evening pretending to watch the draw when in reality he is watching a "green screen". This is very clever in itself because they are hinging everything on the draw timing being exactly as it is every week, otherwise he would be out of sync.

The live BBC feed is then projected onto the green screen, so it appears over the pre-recorded footage. So it looks like DB is watching live TV but it's live TV over pre-recorded footage of DB watching the tv. Power generator at the back is to make us believe the TV is real and has power, but it's just a prop.

The draw is made and he is stood still saying nothing, thats because the balls fall at different rates each week, so he can't script that bit. He mentions the bonus ball at the end a little late, it's already in it's slot by then, but we can forgive him that.

He pretends to scribble the numbers down on the card.

Then, and this is the bit I'm still unsure of but almost certain.. as he walks from TV to the stand, they switch the footage from pre-recorded to live. This is even more clever than the first bit, as DB has to be stood in the exact same pose as he is stood in at the start of the live footage. They must have practiced this to death to get it that good.

The lighting at the back wall seems to change which again suggests a cut.

He then walks over to the stand which he has been preparing while we were watching the pre-recorded footage, and viola. DB is live again and the numbers are all correct.

Also, no studio audience was possible because they'd have seen all of the above.

I doubt highly that any projectors, inject thingies etc will have been used, because that's not his style, especially as he is going to be on TV friday explaining it and also how 'we' can all do it.

That said, I really like the suggestion that he filmed that sequence thousands of times over a year. He made a bit of a deal of it being a year and also, he did only claim to predict five rather than six of the numbers, which reduces the number of combinations he would need to film by quite a margin. Also he did do something of that nature once before, I think he flipped a coin and it came up heads ten times in a row, and that took him about 20 hours of takes.

Also, who says that the reveal on Friday will be the truth about how he did it?  He might spin some more deceit during the 'reveal'...

Also, who is to say he was even on TV last night at all? Maybe we will tune in on Friday and the voiceover person will say 'Derren Browns been dead for 8 years' in a quaky southern American drawl

I cant have 3 the pre-recorded thingy, not how this is described anyway...

3 things.

1.  As soon as the jackpot flashes up on the screen he says ''£2.4million this week etc''

2.  The instant the chap presses the red button he says ''oh there we go red button is pressed etc''

3.  At the end he writes down the numbers without moving from he position, reading them out as he writes.

But between those things happening 6 balls are drawn and he doesn't move or say a thing. Enough time for somebody to organise the balls while they are cut to the pre-recorded part and then when the bonus is drawn they go back to live and the balls have been sorted out. He writes them down and walks over. It'd have to be practised alot (but he said it's taken him a year) but it is not impossible.

Looking like it was done with a split-screen - as the balls are being drawn, only the right hand side of the screen is live, the side with the balls on is a pre-record, and someone puts the correct balls in, with the images being merged back just before Derren walks across to the balls.

Seems someone didn't put the left-most ball back in exactly the right place.

He is revealing all on friday, so the chances of it being any sort of split screen/writing on the balls as they are revealed jobby is very slim, because anyone with access to state of the art TV equipment could do that, even Paul Daniels. I have no idea how he did it, but having watched just about everything he has done, i doubt he has resorted to blatant camera trickery (now sneakier camera trickery perhaps)

Andrew T is right - it's a split screen - watch the balls really closely and all of a sudden the left one changes shape as it goes from a frozen pic back to the real one once an assistant has written the numbers on the balls. Simple imo.

I just can't see how it could possibly be anything other than a trick of time or illusion.

If you look closely at the screen you see a man run on and switch the balls just as the bonus is being drawn. I almost missed him at first cos he was wearing dark clothing and a cap pulled down. But luckily I have sky+ so could rewind and catch him in the act.

Yeah, it would be a better trick if Derren Brown got people out of the chair instead. The only way really is to put the remote just out of reach. Even then most people would put up with watching Songs of Praise while they figured out a way to get the remote without moving.
