FEMALE POKER PLAYERS REJOICE!

POKERSTARS NET SIGNS ON AS OFFICIAL SPONSOR OF THE HIGH HEELS POKER TOUR TO BRING THE EXCITEMENT OF ONLINE PLAY TO THE FELT

ISLE OF MAN, UK –SEPTEMBER, 2009 –While men have traditionally taken center stage at the world’s biggest tournaments, interest among women in poker, both online and offline, is skyrocketing. According to recent poll, women account for up to 25 percent of the poker playing public, up dramatically from just five years ago. Of course, women have been playing poker in their own home games since the game took hold in America, one hundred years ago.

Today, PokerStars net, the world’s largest poker school, announced its sponsorship of the acclaimed High Heels Poker Tour (HHPT).  Founded in 2007, the HHPT was created to empower women who want to become champions in the growing world of poker. Like PokerStars, The HHPT seeks to provide the best competitive environment where women can explore, develop, and continue growing and learning top strategies to perfect their “A” game.

The PokerStars sponsorship will include support for HHPT’s growing roster of tournaments; the first of began this month at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, NY. After New York, the tour heads south to Florida for three outstanding events in Dania, Hollywood and Tampa, where the nation’s female champions of tomorrow will vie for not only a generous prize pool, but great friendships, camaraderie and competition at the tables.

“PokerStars has all of the attributes in a online partner that female players crave: an incredible variety of quick, entertaining games that range from low buy in sit and goes and cash games to serious tournament play, all in an environment where women can learn the game, develop their skills, and truly become champions,” said Lauren Failla, founder of the High Heels Poker Tour. “With champions like Vanessa Rousso, Katja Thater, and Vicky Coren, our players have a whole new set of role models to emulate and challenge, online and at the tables.

In addition to the tour sponsorship, PokerStars.net and HHPT will also be collaborating on the HHPT Grand Finale and PokerStars $1000 buy-in ladies event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in January 2010.

FEMALE BRITISH POKER PLAYERS
WIN A TRIP TO LONDON WITH POKERSTARS

ISLE OF MAN, SEPTEMBER 3, 2009 – British women have been rocking the world of poker lately and showing men they really do have the skills and talent to make it to the top.

Team PokerStars UK PRO Vicky Coren won £500,000 at the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour (EPT) event in London in 2006 and a further $40k at this year’s PokerStars Caribbean Adventure while former PokerStars EPT presenter Kara Scott has won over $500k in the last 14 months alone after coming 2nd at the Irish Open and going deep two years running at the World Series of Poker.

There’s no doubt British women have what it takes to compete at international level but now PokerStars is giving them a helping hand - a unique chance to win an all-expenses-paid trip to London and a seat in a major live women-only event. The “PokerStars EPT Ladies Game”, which takes place October 5, forms part of the PokerStars EPT London Poker Festival and follows the success of other women-only events at PokerStars tournaments around the world.

From now until September 26, PokerStars is running a series of daily freeroll (“free to enter”) tournaments aimed just at British women. The top nine players each day will get a seat in the online final on September 27 and the top ten finalists will win a £500 Ladies Game prize package including the £220 entry fee for the EPT Ladies Game, £100 spending money and a night at the five-star Hilton Metropole hotel - not to mention a signed copy of Vicky Coren's new book and the chance to meet her in person.

Coren, a member of Team PokerStars PRO since 2006, said: “There are a lot of great female poker players out in the world already, but there could be a lot more. Playing online, women don't have to worry about the long late hours of the live game, or the stern faces of a roomful of men. You can log on whenever you like, for as long or short a time as you like, and fit this around the demands of careers, childcare or whatever else is going on. For women who want to take a shot at a live tournament - but don't fancy staring at a table of snarling male opponents - this promotion is perfect.”

Would it be legal?

lol. sure sounds like it from the name of the tour - who on earth thought up that one?

I usually play in trainers myself, but will have a bash at the freerolls.

Women in poker are brilliant. In fact, some of the best valet service and massages I've had have been from women.

For the potential illegality of it to be exposed someone has to highlight it, who's going to make this a discrimination issue?

there won't be - it's not gimmicky enough, and, rightly or wrongly, a site probably wouldn't want to associate itself with something like that (I know it's hypocritical).

I'm sure it would be legal.

because otherwise whatever laws were in place to stop that happening would also apply to women's poker tournaments, and as they run pretty openly, I presume they are legal.

because greeks can't rap?

there was a case in america I remember a while back where a couple of blokes turned up and demanded to play in a women's tour event as a protest against discrimination.

it ended up in court and it was ruled that women only games were fine and did not amount to discrimination but the organisers had to let men play as well. very odd

I edited my last post to this effect but i imagine the legality of it is the same for both men and women, it couldnt be otherwise, if you wanted to sue the womens poker tour for discrimination as a male poker pro i'm sure with all the crazy European laws we have you'd definitely have a case of some sort, it's something that has to be highlighted though i think, i'm not sure that there are many articles or directives in european law that specifically cover "games" or over activities that actively disallow men, though i suppose if you argue it affects your living as a poker pro it could fall under that law though i could see the intricacies of the case, determining if it was a game of skill or chance, it it was your living and then if it was affecting your living etc becoming very convoluted.

something like this would have to have some sort of precedent set to determine it's legality i think, if not you could possibly wind up being in breach of the ECHR just for having a girls only night in

it's music of black origin, a catch-all to take in a range of musical genres. You don't have to be black to be nominated/win an award.

I think it would fall under the same rules as men only and women only clubs.

These are allowed (although I think there are some caveats) - what isn't allowed is restrictions in the same club based on discrimination. e.g. a golf club with a men only bar for example.

If that's right then that covers things like the MOBO's and would cover Greeksteins MOWO awards as being legal as well.

It was the Greek Championships.  It's not legal to hold it in Greece so they had it at DTD.  Same as the Norwegian Champs.

people do still harp on about it, a lot of white people still believe in it and a lot of black people are still angry about it, it is the reason(and quite a reasonable one) why you can have a black origins music award but not a white one, the negative connotation of "white only" is still there.

Unfortunatley its deep seated in minorities on both sides... but i dont think having something called the MOBO's helps... its an award for a number of related musical generes...and many many white people were involed in said generes evolution... there fore why not call it the award for Music of Urban Origination ?

The only reason why the MOBOs were set up is because British black music and acts never got a look in at the Brit Awards.

It wasn't a 'this will right the wrongs of slavery' thing, it was just so that people like Beverly Knight might sell a few more records.

The one thing  that drives me nutty is when nursery rhymes such as baa baa black sheep are deemed racist.

Why are they deemed such? Because ignorant fools don't check their facts and make assumptions.... Which then leads to the original meaning / connotation being lost.

Baa baa black sheep have you any wool?  Bloody hell yes mate and it's all TAX FREE because it's black - Black sheep were coveted. It was a positive thing!

I think this sort of stuff tilts Red-Dog like it tilts me.

It tilts me as well.

For years women have wanted to be seen as equal to men in a lot of areas.  Poker is an ideal place where we can have total equality in playing ability and prizes (unlike snooker if you look at the cash prizes - unless this has changed in recent years).

If the tours are there for women only, then it does make sense for good women poker players to enter as they would have an obvious edge and at the end of the day you play poker to win money. However, I am not keen on it as for me it's like 'here's the women's only section as they need one'.  WHY does there have to be a women's only tour, if some people don't like the idea of playing poker against men then tough IMO.

Out of curiosity, what are men's opinions of playing on a table full of women with them being the lone male - would you feel intinidated, would you be distracted, would it make no difference whatsoever?

Women only tours are probably here to stay but I for one would like to see it balanced with men only tours - but that would never happen, I could imagine the outcry and chants of 'injustice' etc.  GRRRRRRRRR   so so wrong.

Out of curiosity, what are men's opinions of playing on a table full of women with them being the lone male - would you feel intinidated, would you be distracted, would it make no difference whatsoever?

I wouldn't bluff, I can tell you that much.

Is it playing poker in just high heels? In which case I'm sure the men who think this was a bad idea may come around...? depending on the women players obv!

I'm like Claw - I normally wear comfortable shoes, but if I have to get the stilettoes out for a free game I'm in.

I would be amazed if this works. Most of the women I have spoken to enjoy the idea of women's poker, but at the same time feel pretty patronised by the whole idea.

Surely the idea of making them wear high heels is going to do much to remove the stereotype?
