Title: Brief Report from Day 1 of the £1k WSOPE Post by: GreekStein on September 18, 2009, 02:46:17 PM As some of you may have seen from 'Vegas and the Aftermath' I popped in to the Empire Casino on Leicester square this lunchtime to see my hero Anthony Kendall, otherwise known as Tikay. Here's a brief report of the goings on.
I walk down the stairs and on the first table I see is the second most famous Greek poker player in the UK, Andy Andreou, or 'GreekFish'. We exchanged a quick nod as us media types do and then I overheard talk of how Phil Hellmuth had justed busted with KK vs 105. I instantly realised why none of the railbirds had asked for my signature yet, or why any of the bloggers hadn't requested a few snaps - they were obviously trying to catch the 11 time bracelet winner before he left the building. Nevermind, I like to keep low profile but I must admit I was a little relieved. Then I was round to the front and one lad catches my eye. He's telling the management that he doesn't want a 3k stack, but that 2k was plenty for him. When the management insist 'that's not possible sir' he calmly takes his seat, places 2x 500denomination chips in his mouth, crunches down and eats them and washes them down with a bit of stella and then shouted 'geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeza'. Think the TD commented his name was David Shallow. Next room was the main poker room, where poker operates when these special events aren't taking place. I see Devilfish and after a short 'lol' moment at the small animal he keeps on his head I notice Andy Bloch sitting next to him. Andy was reading a magazine, with his headphones in and playing in the tournament. Normally I wouldn't consider disturbing him but I figured it's ok on this special day. I went up, wished him a 'shana tova', we rubbed our schnozzes quickly and agreed to go on a 'Booze Cruise for Jews Night' in town if he busted. Next up I bumped into Alan 'Lucky' McBride and we chatted briefly before he took me over to see Alex Martins table. He was going nicely on 9k thanks to one hand which me and Alan caught the end of. I'll do my best to report the hand as Alex explained when he came and said hi to us on the rail. "I'll cut a long story short - I decided to isolate a mid position limp from the BB, purely for metagame purposes as my opponent was playing an exploitable 34/9 style. Before you ask boys, I was intent I could still take a profitable line playing semi-deep/shallow OOP with a mediocre holding. Anyway after c-betting a double bellybuster gutshot draw I decided to make use of my scarlet-pimpernell-like image and checkraise the turn as the marginal line of EV I was taking appears stronger against a semi-weak lagtard fishstick opponent. The river was where it really got interesting for though - he opted to induce a bluff based on a read of tendencies and treat the hand as is played in a vacuum of a single raised orbit in which the aggressor became the aggressee. I wasn't going to stand for that so I min 3-bet bluffed to induce a 4-bet bluff. I then decided to 5-bet bluff all in cos, well, fuck it. I won". After a few more wonders round the place I saw fish like Roland De Wolfe, Layne Flack, Erik Seidel and Willie Tann (who looked very upset with a sort of 'if I win this tournament I'll still have to travel all the way to the Vic to play Craps as they don't accomodate it here, ffs' look on his face). All those people and not one sighting of my lifelong hero, Anthony Kendall. Sigh. We also met Mo Muse who was moving table with a useful stack of chips. Watched a couple of interesting hands involving Mark Goodwin. In the first one as SB v BB he bluffs 3 streets and is disappointed to be called by opponent with 3rd pair on the river. The same two players were all in pre flop a few hands later. Not sure who bet first, but Mark only had A9 (tilting !) and opponent had QQ. Two aces arrive on the board and Mark doubles up, to cries of "blessed!" Willie Tann had bust out just as I was leaving. He wasn't too impressed when I said "see you in Luton this evening!" He was indeed off to The Vic for another tourney. Cos Papertits is one of the most well known names on the UK poker circuit. He has been described as "Star of the Poker show" and many have said "The diary of Ireland next month will be good". Cos has uncovered many frauds in the poker world like Carl "The Dean" Sampson might not be as good as he claims to be and the Anthony "Tikay" Kendall is not quite as young as he claims. You can subscribe to Cos's post at www.blondepoker.com for very reasonable price of $5000 per month payable in one lump sum, to Barry "Vinni" Neville in a brown paper bag at an undisclosed location in non-Albanian South Yorkshire. Mariners, my shirt > yours :P. Tikay, get lost for putting me in a photoe with the handsome mr Masterman, unfair. Just want to say a big ty to one of the genuine nice guys in poker imo, KerryTaylor, who offered and just gave me a lift back to north london as a favour no problems, when he lives near heathrow, gent.
To the poker, 3k starting stack, pretty immense structure imo, the 25/25 level at the beginning giving just enough depth for it to be truly playable the whole way through. Standard was atrocious, 2 guys on my table limp call check folding 90% of hands. I chipped away ok to begin with, went form 3 to 5 to 7 to 10 then knocked out Ali to get to 12ish. Then 1st blip, tight utg (3.5k) opens 200 @25/50, i flat QQ, frazer overcalls bu. Flop 347hh, opener leads, i raise small, frazer ships. I did tank for a tadge but i think there are way too many heart combos he has, i was right, but he had 56hh and i get minor rubdown from both him and utg (who had 99) about i shoulda reraised pre (god it even tilts me to type that lol, 3b ffs) and then apparently the 99 guys woulda stop and go'd on my ass. Hmmmmmmm. No i didnt get it either. Then lost AQ v QQ of nutter, then chipped up/3b/did a couple of fun things on the flop to get to about 20k when i isolate someloose passive guy otb with 59cc, bb coldcalls, fish folds. Flop comes 5Q10ddd, he check calls and im giving up on the K turn, check check, i bink the 5 river and get a chunk; sadly and unfortunately, image was shattered and i got in a few shit spots after because i didnt adjust in time. Peaked at about 24 when i played out a big pot with JJ on an A27ssA4s board and had to check fold to some decentish old-school guy that just cannoned the river. Bit of a sigh, fold, get shown complete air, table gets a laugh, i tilt off a few k :) Get a lot of new faces including a very open yank, joe grech and an english youngster all on my right. Pretty perfect for me as im down to 7k and get to jam a lot as they are opening so wide. Have to sit back and watch as Ian Frazer gets birthday present after birthday present, although tbh, i think he played pretty well today. Given the only info i have on him is tv donkaments (AQ anyone?) i was really suprised, 100% not a mark. Oh, about the birthday presents, how about this. Internet yank opens 1500 @ 300/600, Frazer 3b to 5200 (20k eff), literally the 2nd time hes 3b all day, yank 11.8k, frazer jams, yank calls. Frazer KK, yank J8s, no miracles. HOW THE FUCK. Also, this little beauty, utg opens in 50/100, frazer, french looking tightish guy and random calls calls. Flop J87dds. EP cbets small, frazer calls, french guy calls, random folds. Turn 4s. EP bets, frazer raises, french guy calls, EP folds. River 10d. Frazer bets, frenchie dwells for eternity, then jams, frazer calls w A9 ro rivered 1 card straight after funky turn move. Frenchies hand. 44. Words out of his mouth immediately after "i thought i could make you fold the straight". I kid u not. Couple of things that were vaguely interesting/odd, huck seed comes to table (namedrop obv), So got a double up late on jamming a6 and Kj calls, i hold. Then 3b jam super wide w yanks opens with air as im carddead for last 3 levels to stay afloat. Back on day 2 with 15k, 40 out of 300 runners make the trip back, in with a shout, which is all i want. Great seeing some of the nice guys in poker (Tikay excluded :P ) and lets hope JP kelly somehow manages to fuckup a virtually anassailable (sp?) chip lead! :) not really, hes a nice guy, he can take 2nd. Any of you thinking about playing tomorrow, do it, field was super soft in general, probably tougher to play a 50fo on stars. :dd: Title: Re: Brief Report from Day 1 of the £1k WSOPE Post by: jonlundy on September 19, 2009, 10:20:11 AM . Title: Re: Brief Report from Day 1 of the £1k WSOPE Post by: the sicilian on September 19, 2009, 10:51:52 AM Next up I bumped into Alan 'Lucky' McBride and we chatted briefly before he took me over to see Alex Martins table. I won".
I'm Always grateful when someone simplifies one of Alex's hands.... What a breath of fresh air compared to the now seemingly standard 10-15k starting chips when everyone wastes 4-5 hours of their lives just getting mentally and physically exhausted before the levels that matter. Every single player I spoke to yesterday thought the structure was perfect and moaned about the massive stack nonsense. If you play poker for enjoyment and the soul destroying slow structures please go and play play money games or a £5 `pretend wsop main event' at a local casino. I am soon to set up an organisation to preserve some sense in live tournaments `SOOS'. Save Our Old Structures. One aim is to have multiple MTT's at a casino in one night. Ie. comps going off every 3 hours and lasting 3 hours. It is almost impossible to avoid the variance for `full time' players otherwise. Ps. I don't know why anyone would 4 bet any hand early in this comp, but if you did and got 5 bet by a tight player, then 120bb's deep I would think kk is a standard fold. No idea BeaneH, I was only there until about 2pm, but I would not recommend even playing there whilst WSOP-E is on. The Tourney was being played in NINE different areas on two Floors, tucked away in alcoves, landings, corridors, & cubby-holes, all sorts. With due respect, it's hard to imagine a worse venue to hold such a Fessie. But Harrahs own it, so that's that really. Title: Re: Brief Report from Day 1 of the £1k WSOPE Post by: titaniumbean on September 19, 2009, 09:09:06 PM Ok was just wondering as the action down in the empire is usually pretty soft. Cant believe the limits to the number of runners that the vic has it's terrible.

Pretty underawed about going down to the vic with how badly run it is when it's quiet for any cash whilst all the tournies are on. Yeh vic always has lots of lists open and 10/25 running but when they max out the tables for tournie fields they have less space for cash so the 1/2 1/3 and 2/5 games are hard to get into/started. I bloody hope they have found some dealers since they've gone 24hr and got these festival events on. It's not about saying go away, its about balancing a decent sized tournament with an existing cash game business. If we were to up the fields to 250 there would be a significant number of cash game regulars who would think they were being told to go away.
The Vic has over 40 of the best quality full time dealers, far more than anywhere else in the uk. There is good selection of small games. Usually way more than big games. Title: Re: Brief Report from Day 1 of the £1k WSOPE Post by: AlrightJack on September 20, 2009, 08:59:35 AM Despite the fact that the govt takes 50% of gross revenues and the room now runs at a significant loss, the management of the Vic are commited to keeping the room open. The wages and working conditions of the dealers are probably better than any other room in london. Despite the taxation, quality will not be compromised when it comes to dealing standards. We will only employ the best.
Title: Re: Brief Report from Day 1 of the £1k WSOPE Post by: AlrightJack on September 20, 2009, 09:06:03 AM The structures at the Vic's festival are excellent. Starting stacks good but not excessive - 6k to 10k for the freezeouts and mostly run with a 45 minute clock.
Title: Re: Brief Report from Day 1 of the £1k WSOPE Post by: AlrightJack on September 20, 2009, 09:13:09 AM The fact that so many people have chosen to play in the 1k at the empire is not because they like the idea of a 3k starting stack. It is because it is the world series. Obviously some people like it, but i'd hazard a guess that most people dont.

Title: Re: Brief Report from Day 1 of the £1k WSOPE Post by: action man on August 16, 2010, 05:05:54 PM The first level is 25-25 and starting stack 3000, 1 hour levels. Ps. I don't know why anyone would 4 bet any hand early in this comp, but if you did and got 5 bet by a tight player, then 120bb's deep I would think kk is a standard fold. hows the SOOS getting on? Title: Re: Brief Report from Day 1 of the £1k WSOPE Post by: Amatay on August 16, 2010, 07:42:27 PM Next up I bumped into Alan 'Lucky' McBride and we chatted briefly before he took me over to see Alex Martins table. I won". Superb! Superb! should have been followed by a bump into Bazza neville who had a similar stack. Woulda gone something like: Cos: How'd you get them chips Baz? Baz: I were ooop n darrrrn on da flop |
