Quite how it's taken me this long to work that out I don't know :( And i'm supposed to be a computer scientist... click "Profile" --> "Look and Layout Preferences" and where it says "Use quick reply on topic display:" change that box to yes, open by default. I also use a different theme for the forum, as I find the yellow and grey default ugly. So i use the smf default which is a rather more soothing shades of blue.
