If I click the "new" button next to a thread title it takes me to the first new post that i've not read! Quite how it's taken me this long to work that out I don't know  And i'm supposed to be a computer scientist... |

There's a quick reply function? I assume everyone knows about this, but if not:
click "Profile" --> "Look and Layout Preferences" and where it says "Use quick reply on topic display:" change that box to yes, open by default.
