Title: How much would it take to NEVER play poker again?
Post by: GreekStein on November 19, 2009, 03:42:24 PM
Someone is standing infront of you offering an amount in CASH $$ for you to never play a single hand of any variant of poker ever again in your life.

How much do you accept?

No idea. I don't like these completely ridiculous scenarios...

But if I had to give an answer.. £500,000 should do it.

Do you play poker for a living?

If not this is an insane amount just to quit a hobby.

I don't play for a living and I wouldn't do it for less than half a mill.

As I said to Maria, I just love the misery this game brings me too much.

Also.....

Don't answer them then!!

How much to cut your hair in the style of a male?

My immediate thought was £1m, but then straight away the brain was reeling with all the possible tourneys I could enter if I had that kind of money.  It's a bit of a double edged sword really.  Enjoy it too much and don't spend enough to get myself into financial trouble, so it would be a hard sell and a hard one to stick to after.

i play poker for a hobby but most of my life is based round poker

money isnt important to me as i can comfotably live off my pensions living this far north

but £250k would mean i could have a decent holiday every month for the rest of my life

so would quit poker for £500k as i would like to some to my family

Hmmmm given I don't think I am going to be coining it in playing online poker in 10 years time, maybe even 3/4 years due to the games getting tougher.  I would insta take about £150k(probably less) and do something different.

I think I would eventually miss poker but my enjoyment of the game is not particularly massive after grinding for the last few years. I would say the majority of people who post on here like poker more than me, but it is a means to an end and suits my extremely lazy life style.

i zm rethinking the amount for me

i would like to live an even more comfy life

if i was to quit poker and be able to do enough stuff to fill the void poker would create

so i would need 2k a day for the rest of my life (index linked) so about £15 million

It is interesting how the grinders on this thread would take less than the recreational players.

you would expect that the grinders are doing it to earn a wage to live off
the hobby players are doing for something to provide relief from our lives

i am struggling to think of what i would fill my life with if i gave up gambling
without a serious amount of money might be different if i was still young and fit

This topic is starting to get interesting.....

A question to all the people who have number's of £200k or more.....

Is this because you expect to make at least £200k playing poker so want compensating or is it because you love the game so much that's it's genuinely worth that amount of money to you?

Tank's, MC's and Longy's answers are interesting. All 3 are grinders who make a steady living playing poker and their figures are based around being able to quit and do something else instead. BAM has done similar as he would obviously need £5.89 to offset what he might win by sticking with the game for the foreseeable future.

Kev and Boldie have clearly just picked a sum that would be nice to get as a one off and a slightly realistic figure. This is the sort of figure that I'd be happy with too.

Are other people's answers just based on greed or is there a real reason?

Title: Re: How much would it take to NEVER play poker again?
Post by: Ironside on November 19, 2009, 07:10:55 PM
my reason is that i need the money to fill the hole that giving up poker would create

my life revolves round poker as its the one thing i can do where i am at an equal with everyone else

if i wasnt in the chair i would accept a much lower sum as i could use my time doing things like golf
and hill walking moutain climbing canoeing scuba diving etc etc

Title: Re: How much would it take to NEVER play poker again?
Post by: MC on November 19, 2009, 08:54:08 PM
I've been grinding a lot recently, which definitely isn't "fun", but then again I bet I enjoy it a lot more than doing something else for that duration/intensity.

I do love the game, Dan Carter told me that me and Stu Rutter talk about poker more than any other player he knows.

But on the odd occasion I do feel like I'm pissing my life away and could be doing something more worthwhile. I used to love being a hip-hop MC (hence the name) but I haven't recorded a song in like 3 years because poker has just taken over everything. It took over Uni and I've done bugger all towards becoming a Primary School teacher which is still on the cards for me in the future I think.

So £200k, which is more than I'll be realistically be able to make from the game in the next few years seems like a decent line. I might get the shakes though for the first few days, lol.

This is a hypothetical question which can not really be answered. however, it is also an interesting thought. Most people who play poker do not play primarily for the money - money is always a consideration and has to be there to add the excitement factor. I think the real reason for playing is more fundamental than that.

Why would Phil Ivey Doyle Brunson Phil Helmuth et al.play in  the WSOP when they are multi millionaires? Its not for the money its for the competition! I often wonder why fishermen fish when they often don't catch anything - its because they enjoy the competition {with the fish I assume).

We play for the buzz - the money is the petrol that drives it - we wouldn't play if there was no money but we would continue to play even if we had more money than we could spend.

I lol'd

Its the price of a pack of fags at my local Tesco.

Seriously though I was asked the other day what I would do if I was one of the Euro £45 million winners and after all the party's, drugs, ladyboys etc I would just tour the world playing donkaments on every continent (and all the side events when I bust before the first dinner break).

This question is a flip as probably no amount of money could make me give up as I grind my balls off to try and achieve the said donkament dream, if I can't have my donkament dream what have a got?

I really can't think of a figure. I play for fun, and have made a load of friends through poker too - if I took an amount of money to stop playing I'd probably end up being rich and miserable, constantly resenting the fact I can't go to play tournaments I'd like to take part in. I'd give up playing for a year for maybe 40-50k ,but any longer than that I really don't think I could sign up to.

Just on a tangent, I'd happily never play a hand of online poker again for 100k

I used to love being a hip-hop MC (hence the name) but I haven't recorded a song in like 3 years because poker has just taken over everything.

Thank god for that :) Anything that reduces the amount of "hip-hop" in the world gets my approval :)

That's why I'm a big fan of ghetto's, crack dealers and gang wars.

Okay

I have £10k in cash
I will deliver it to you this evening
Only condition is you cant play poker until 21/11/2010
Your going to turn me down?

Title: Re: How much would it take to NEVER play poker again?

I suppose this is a very different question to "how much would you need to win to give up poker for good"

With that question, you paid and played to win that money, it's not the same thing as being given a large sum for nothing (or being given a large sum to give up poker I should say)

For many people their answer to this new question would be that they wouldn't give up. (If they win 10million, they're obv doing something right, all the more reason to keep playing!)

For me the answer to both questions is the same. If I somehow came into the 100k, rather than being given it to quit, I would still stop playing as I play only for the money at the moment. My life goals don't involve proving myself at poker.
I would probs give up poker for good because it's not really a hobby you can dabble in (or it wouldn't be for me) I have to either gogogo or nonono. The need for a competitive challenge in my life would be replaced by something else (probs chess)

It's a bit of a tricky one for me as, similar to the grinders, my career is tied in with the game.  Therefore even if i gave up playing recreationally I still often need to play a few hands for testing purposes etc.  Plus it helps within the industry in general to also play an active role in the community.

So I think i would need an extra caveat of a smooth transaction into a similar pay level role in another area/industry, plus maybe £20k as a handy windfall.  I don't think it would bother me too much longterm and so could probably be bartered down though.  Most playing time for me is often just to amuse myself anyway, which can easily be replaced by Xbox, Movies, Masturbation....

I've been grinding a lot recently, which definitely isn't "fun", but then again I bet I enjoy it a lot more than doing something else for that duration/intensity.

Was anyone else wondering where he was going with this opening sentence?

Not sure any price, don't think I could quit the game forever I love it too much.. very sad imo lol!

Yep same here played the game about 4 years now and I still love it like I did when I started... I'm surprised myself because everything I usually do I get bored with quickly... Just enjoy the thrill the game gives you...

i zm rethinking the amount for me

i would like to live an even more comfy life

if i was to quit poker and be able to do enough stuff to fill the void poker would create

so i would need 2k a day for the rest of my life (index linked) so about £15 million

the price of strippers sure has gone up recently then.

I would probably take 10K (maybe less if somebody actually turned up with the money). If it was just for a year I would definately take 1K and probably £500.

Its not about the money you actually win at poker, it is a bit like saying how much would it take for you never to go down the pub again or never set foot on the golf course again or never watch another game of football. It is giving up one of the things you do for relaxation.

Obviously this would be different for the pro's, asking a pro this is a bit like asking the rest of us how much would it take for you to give up work for the rest of your life. For most of us this would just be enough to compensate us for what we would have earned.

Altho i expect to make some money from poker and think i could turn it into a job post degree, i don't think i could do it for 100k atm, which is just ridiculous. Poker is my favourite thing in the world by far. Sad imo. Obviously would love to travel and just chill but hopefully poker can do this for me as well, so prob a pretty high figure to give up for life. I'd take 12k to have next year off.

65-27 = 38 x 30k = £1,140,000

That way i can live a comfortable 30k a year life style until retirement age, then i will live on my pension. Obv with that much in a oner i would make a lot on interest so I am assuming I would receive it in monthly installments. If it was a lump sum I think i would realistically take 700k. Mortgage free I could live on that til retirement or spin it up on roulette.

Quite gutted I didn't make a post in this thread the first time round, it would have been interesting to compare. Right now, the figure is not going to be much at all since I'm quite keen to start working (I'd quit for £60k - £150k) . Back in 2009 I would have imagined the figure would have been much much higher especially since I was playing bigger games.
