Title: Doctor Who - WP Matt Smith
Post by: George2Loose on January 01, 2010, 10:50:44 PM
Anyone watch this tonight? Shameless fan. Kids love it.

Bit disappointed in the final two episodes but think Tennant was an awesome Doctor.

These last 2 episodes have been completely awful. I liked Tennant in the role and think it a shame that this is the best they could come up with.

The last 15 minutes of that ep especially was some of the most self indulgant tripe i've ever seen on television.

And not quite sure what the point of the Time Lords was. My first guess was that they'd be back so there'd be a reset for the new series. But then they just went away again. So not sure what the point was. Glad to see RTD was on his usual form though. Oh no! The entire human race is the Master! Gallifrey is about to crash into the Earth! How can we stop this!? Oh, we'll just press a button. Nah, that's not original. We'll shoot a console instead. Sorted.

Trailer for Series 5 looks good though. Has anyone posted the new assistant on the tv girls thread yet?

The last 15 minutes were just RTD wanking all over the screen.

The programmes really were toss - plots that made no sense full of deus ex machina claptrap.

The only good bits were the scenes between the Doctor and Wilf (because they were just proper acting) and I thought the resolution of the 'he will knock 4 times' prophecy was the only bit which actually worked.

Series 5 did look good - I especially liked the fact the trailer ended with the new Doctor firing a gun, which contrasts well with the whole 'no gun' thing in End of Time.

Agree with whats been said, it was a poor last story.

Russell T must have run out of ideas.  but this Doctor has been one of the best.

Its hard to remember David Tennant was Casanova before DW,( also by Russel T )

and he was in Harry Potter as an evil wiz in Goblets of Fire.

In 2005 as the new DW was about to start, BBC did a documentary reviewing all the last doctors, and it was narrated by David Tennant

Saw him in the Xmas Shakespeare thingy with Sir Patrick Stewart,

but there were no subtitles, so didn't watch for long

Personally I thought the ending was excellent, it made the Doctor very human.

Its exactly what any normal person would do with only hours to live and acess to the Tardis.

Tenant was an excellent doctor... but did Russel T watch Star wars before he wrote it... total rip of the millenium Falcon v TIE fighter scene and the Mos Eisley bar scene .

Title: Re: Doctor Who- gg Tennant
Post by: George2Loose on January 04, 2010, 06:01:17 PM
Obv the bar scene was sposed to be a rip off!

Think that Tennant was awesome as Doctor and twas quite a poignant regeneration.

Think Matt Smith will do well- he deserves a chance.

Ok, watched trailer

The Doctor would never, ever,  carry a gun, as he explained in the last episode.

And attacking a Dalek with a sledge hammer, he would know thats unlikely to kill it

lol, time will tell

Ok, heres an unseen bit on YouTube

Well, I for one hated the first episode of series 2...I thought it was fragmanted, poorly indroduced and overall not one of the best!!!! I was disappointed with last seasons arc, i thought there were too many filler episodes and not enough substance!

I'm a bit gutted as I'm a HUGE Doctor Who fan but all this guff about; is the girl in the spacesuit River Song, is Amy's baby River Song, the death of the Doctor in the first 5 mins AND that DREADFUL TBC all spoiled it for me...I'll watch next weeks as it's a two parter but I doubt this will be a 'must see' for me after that!!

xx

dislike

Although I will admit that for a series opener it was perhaps a tad slow. A consequence of being a two parter no doubt. And not only was it setting its own story up it was setting the series' story.

Wow, I loved it.  Thought it was the really strong and can't wait for the conclusion.  To attempt to answer your questions in order:  Very likely, probably and the death of the Doctor is setting up the story arc for the series, a concept and plot I adore.

Well, sometimes it's best to be in the minority imo!!!! I really hope to be proved wrong, then again I waited thoughout the whole of last season to be 'wowed' but it never really happened...even after rewatching it wasn't much better... And please don't get me started on the farce of a Christmas episode, it was almost as bad as the one with Kyle ffs!!!!!!

This series was promised to be 'darker' ...I can only hope part 2 picks up for me!!! One thought...Doctor is 1103 with no tardis because he's been stuck in the past, waiting to catch up with Amy, River & Rory...

For me, it's still not as good as Tennant & Russell...maybe that's the problem...

I thought it was awesome and the trailers for episode 2 from the BBC homepage look pretty scary.....says she who has to check the Angel in the churchyard at Shepperton is still there when she drives past lol.

Persevere Irene, Dr Who confidential had a few clues and there are alot of threads going on that will become apparently become clearer and much darker later.

Smith is looking like he's going to be the best doctor so far for me and Steven Moffat is an amazing writer, he can make so many ordinary things become a nightmare, remember Blink & The Silence in the Library....

I really liked Tennant back in the day but can't help but think of his last few episodes and it just drops my opionion of his doctor. I know it's not his fault that he was given those scripts to work with but I struggle to look past "I don't want to go" and the 15 minutes of embarrasment that came with it.

Matt Smith was ahead of Tennant within 10 mins of his first episode.

And I really liked Tennant.

I was very dubious about Matt Smith... The kids and I have loved the new Doctor Who from day 1 and didn't think anyone could top Tennant as we all thought he was the epitome of the doctor .. but Matt has brought together what the doctor is all about... zany eccentric genius + more and made it his own inside one sereis.... gotta love the jammy dodgers and a fez line... thought the first episode was great..non linear..mysterious, funny, creepy, dark all in one show.... luv it !!

oh and I love the series thread story they do...

Great ep. I'm assuming the child is River, with Amy being River's mother. Or something.

The ratings for this are interesting.

The first ep got 6.5m which sounds quite low. The BBC even ran a news story on it saying it was a drop. The updated figures taking records etc have come out now. 8.9m. That's quite a big jump! And that doesn't taken iPlayer into account either. Considering it's a BBC programme I'm surprised they run the story which makes the situation look worse than it is.

Todays episode was excellent.

I liked seeing a bit more of the TARDIS, even if it was only corridors. Nice to see the old control room. We seem to be getting told about the TARDIS' other rooms a lot more recently. I wonder if there'll be any further trips into it.

Be interesting to see if one day we get a female Doctor...

One of the best episodes of New Who.

I must admit for the first 2 or 3 episodes of this season I have been clueless, no idea what was happening and why. Very abstract and just wtf? to me

Last night's though I enjoyed. Simpler plot, more accessible, and better for it.

This.

Really enjoying this season. Love the season long hints that Dr Who gives (Badwolf in Ecclestons series, Torchwood in Tenants first, You are not alone in the second, Rose in his third, The cracks in Smiths first following up to the silence into this series). The moment they hit you and it triggers your memory of episodes gone by is second to none. Really cool trying to work it out too!

Interesting to see how hes gonna get out of his death though. Really really hoping theyre not killing off Dr Who... They have such a good storyline to stop it ever having to die, would be such a waste to kill it off!

I thought it was a bit too hectic early on - would prob have been better as a two parter.

Also the big reveal at the end had been quite clearly signposted so wasn't a surprise.

Some also quite funny lines in there, along with a lesbian cunnilngus joke which was subtle enough to get through in a kids programme.

I also literally lolled at the title of the next episode 'Let's Kill Hitler'

So, catch-up......

The dead girl came from the gamma forest when she was young..the name that amy turned over was from the gamma forest, who's nearest thing we have for water is river...

Melody = song (in gamma-fray ob.)

I'm one of the funktards not going to Vegas so I thought i'd revisit an old thread...

Anyone for an episode in the gamma forests??

If it's aired then talking about it in here is fair game. Just avoid thread until you watch.

Great ep. I'm assuming the child is River, with Amy being River's mother. Or something.

Go me! Though wasn't the hardest to figure out lol

It might have a something to do with the fact that when writing this Stephen Moffat didn't realise corn doesn't grow in winter and they had to wait until July to film the episode....

or more likely they wanted the oh so dramatic 3 month break :)

Really enjoyed it. Brilliant end to the series. However, I wish they'd have done it over 2 episodes. Felt like a massive build up to a train crash (a bit like why I didnt like I Am Legend tbh)

Pro's:

-Some gems like the doctor's wife and the girl who waited

-Matt Smith- take a bow

-Think Rory really came on well and having James Corden back was pretty awesome

Con's:

-The mid season break was a fail

-Too many scary episodes in what should be essentially a family show

-As above, some plot lines get really complicated for no apparant reasons

Rio is 7 and loves doctor who but we've had to start screening them which makes watching them together a pain in the ass.

nice little timeline of river song's life on confidential for anyone who's confused in any way. worth a watch

enjoyed the ending, so obvious yet I hadn't figured it out at all. that's how it should be

I thought the finale was excellent.

Would obviously be a trick to get out of it. Never guessed the tessalecta. When the gangers shown up I just wrote those off as being far too obvious. So by the time we got to the tesselecta I never really considered that again.

Bit of a reboot for the show in terms of style going in to the next series?

Meh, cried a tad when the dad came home, even though everyone knew at the beginning dad was gonna come home...

Liked the Narnian feel to it but thought it was tailored for the younger child.. ended up catching some of the old Tennant chrimbo specials on watch and the difference in drama was astounding..

I digress..

Pretty predictable episode from start to finish but in a nice sweet kind of way...

6 out of 10.. (Scored higher for the humour) but not worth another watch

xx

The Christmas episode was pretty tez - all far too obvious what was going to happen and did just look like a Lidl Narnia.

By all account Moff wrote this in a rush as he was also working on Sherlock - should have given it to someone else if he didn't have time to do it properly.

On a plus point Karen Gillan managed to look super super hot even while wearing a rubbish Christmas jumper.

Yeah, it was enjoyable enough I feel but certainly isn't going to go down in the history books as one of the classics.

Moffat has wrote some good episodes but for me he hasn't come close to The Girl in the Fireplace or Blink - both of which he wrote when he wasn't running the show.

Watched a lot of Doctor Who over Xmas and Tennant still just shades it for me.

Episode for the whole was predictable but loved the ending when Dad came home but loved even more the whole Amy/Rory/Doctor ending.

Easy to relate to this article

http://www.metro.co.uk/lifestyle/894972-richard-herring-amy-pond-has-five-days-left-to-convince-me-to-marry-her (http://www.metro.co.uk/lifestyle/894972-richard-herring-amy-pond-has-five-days-left-to-convince-me-to-marry-her)

Best quote from it:

Quote
This isn't just a deluded infatuation of a middle-aged man terrified of facing reality. I am deeply and truly in love with Amy Pond. Not the actress who plays her – she looks like a nightmare. I am in love with the character of Amy Pond. I am prepared to marry the actress but only if she'll stay in character for the entire marriage.

Wouldnt say that personally, cant beat the daleks imo, but they do scare the living daylights out of me!

Didnt know Amy and Rory were leaving till today. Really happy with the replacement though, Jenna Louise Coleman was awesome in Asylum of the Daleks. Cant wait for it!

Good episode. Sad to see the Ponds go. Rory is awesome. I'm not a massive fan of the Amy character but Karen Gillan more than makes up for that.

I like the Weeping Angels but I think they were by far at their best in Blink years ago.

Do we know if there's any relevance to the fact the intro was different colours in each episode?

Excellent last episode - scary, funny and very sad.

[quote}Jenna Louise Coleman was awesome in Asylum of the Daleks. [/quote]

+1 watched it thinking 'She would make a great assistant'

Sister made me laugh today when talking about Oswyn being the new assistant - "but shes been turned into a Dalek. How can she be an assistant". I'm guessing the Doctor having a time machine might be able to snatch her just before that happens.

So tilting.. Why is everything set in the USofAcross the pond these days??

huge YUK!!

Plus, did anyone shed a tear?? Anyone? You'd think that enough time and adventure had passed to squeeze one out for Amy right?? Wrong.. Just like this doctor, and the script... and the new chuffing opening sequence...

That being said I loved the whole 'Doctor Who' tie in at the end of episode one.. plus I've always loved the Angels - even though they were at their nut best in blink

I for one am really looking forward to the new companion, I was really impressed by her at the first outing and it will do the Doctor good to have a fellow genius round the place..

Finally, kindly gfto mini-series.. Its just not British!!!

xx

Not going to put any spoilers in here for those who have not caught it yet, however..

Just bravo.  Tremendous finale, IMO the strongest one of the modern series.  Roll on the 50th.

I had assiduously avoided any spoilers for this series, so when that thing happened at the end I was literally (and I used that word 100% correctly) gobsmacked.

I smacked my gob.

Just fantastic.

The only downside is that it worked so perfectly, and fitted in with so much other stuff, that the whole Clara thing seemed so inconsequential in comparison.

So looking forward to the 50th now - my concern is that 45 min is not going to be enough.

I liked Matt Smith.  I wish they wouldn't announce these things and his successor.  It would nice to not expect it coming. I know it would be pretty impossible to keep secret, but still would be epic to be watching it and then all of a sudden no.12 has arrived.

That was lovely - even though it was pure fan boy stuff, and it didn't really make sense (what happened to the Zygons?)

I squeed like a 12 year old girl meeting One Direction when I heard the voice of the surprise guest at the end - topped it all off really well.

Title: Re: Doctor Who - WP Matt Smith

Loved it.

First hour was a very traditional and mainstream episode (fun in history, monsters and morality with the Zygon/Human treaty and the moment between the two Oswins).  As it should be, it's a special event and will get many more viewers than the usual Who audience a la Christmas specials.

The last twenty minutes or so was pure fanboy epicness.  As they were rewriting the who motivation of the Doctor's guilt in the modern era I was very apprehensive but I think they pulled it off very well.  And the 13th Doctor moment was a pure mark out.
