Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Nem on December 13, 2005, 06:34:52 PM Only Fools and Horses
Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: snoopy1239 on December 13, 2005, 06:41:39 PM I think it would have to be Only Fools and Horses because it actually made you care about the characters whilst being hilarious at the same time.
The Office isn't too far away though. I'm also a big fan of Father Ted, Blackadder, Phoenix Nights, I'm Alan Partidge, & Red Dwarf. Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: The Baron on December 13, 2005, 06:50:15 PM I'm torn between Monty Python, Fawlty Towers and Only Fools and Horses.
Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: mikkyT on December 13, 2005, 06:53:05 PM I'm the same. Monty Python was ground breaking. Fawlty towers is still so great, in part, they only made 6, leaves you wanting for more! Only fools and horses stands the test of time, can't believe it ran for so long yet remained as funny as on day 1.
Other candidates, and my personal favourites are Red Dwarf and The Office. Each great in their own ways. Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Nem on December 13, 2005, 06:54:51 PM Fawlty Towers is a close 2nd.
Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: booder on December 13, 2005, 07:01:38 PM the adventures of tikay _ episode seven the misread

Phoenix nights and max and paddy's road to nowhere are modern day classics too. Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Ironside on December 13, 2005, 07:06:09 PM fawlty towers

Only fools and horses stands the test of time, can't believe it ran for so long yet remained as funny as on day 1. Other candidates, and my personal favourites are Red Dwarf and The Office. Each great in their own ways. There were 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers. My favourite comedy by a long way though Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Colchester Kev on December 13, 2005, 07:11:29 PM Also if anyone wants to know what to get me for Xmas ... I would love the entire collection of " Big Deal" Robbie Box was my hero ... before he started tampering with Pauline Fowlers norks..YUK !!!!
Seriously, this was a fantastic, funny, moving, sad comedy drama .... British television at its best. Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: ifm on December 13, 2005, 07:12:11 PM Fawlty towers is still so great, in part, they only made 6, leaves you wanting for more! They made 12. I like "my family" till Nick left, grrrr I hate cringe TV so "the office" was awful for me. Only Fools was true class. "Watching" was excellent for it's fantastic put downs and "blackadder" was all round brilliance (the final scene of Blackadder goes forth was spinetingling). Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Trace on December 13, 2005, 07:36:04 PM Farty Towels
Phoenix Nights and I know it ain't British but The Simpsons, I don't watch it much, but watching my Dad laughing in hysterics at a cartoon is bizarre! Sad ;tk; git he is! Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Newportlad on December 13, 2005, 08:09:04 PM Favourite Comedy must be 'Spaced'. Ran for 2 series on Channel 4 about 5 years ago.

Just thought i'd clear that up. Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: NoflopsHomer on December 14, 2005, 02:12:49 AM You're wrong and you're a grotesquely ugly freak.
It's blatantly Brass Eye. Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Sunday8pm on December 14, 2005, 05:55:07 AM trigger happy tv and monty python....especially the silly walk ministry PMSL
Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: thetank on December 14, 2005, 06:06:10 AM Python was great, a lot of it was hit and miss though, they did tend to flog dead horses a fair bit. Well worth sitting through the dull bits though.
John Cleese was the best of them and his Fawlty Towers were all classics. Reggy Perrin was crackin. Leonard Rossiter is probably my favourite comic actor (though I can't spell his name). Apart from 2, all the above that you mentioned are great. Are You Being Served and Dad's Army, they're a bit too catchprase reliant for me. I can't remember laughing at either of them. Each to their own tastes though. No-one's mentioned Men Behaving Badly or Coupling yet. I think these were top notch. Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Newmanseye on December 14, 2005, 06:34:56 AM There was a really good one on sky not long ago based on a colin Butts novel
Is harry on the boat. This had me in stiches and they made a series which was quite good before they made it all serious. Spaced Fawlty Towers The Fast Show Spitting Image 2D TV IQ - Not sposed to be comedy - but funny anyway. There's more, but I think those are me faves... Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Scottish Dave on December 14, 2005, 10:17:52 AM I cant believe no-one has mentioned this:
Vivian, Rick, Neil and Mike were........ The Young Ones!! Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Highstack on December 14, 2005, 11:07:12 AM Only Fools, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder.

I must be the only person who enjoys 2 pints lager and a packet of crisps- juvenile humour at its best. No Ariston you're not alone... they're on all the time on BBC3 as well :) One of the best which you southerners are now getting is Still Game - this is a fantastic comedy. City Lights Naked Video Still Game Chewing the fat Scotch and rye Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: thetank on December 14, 2005, 12:27:21 PM One of the best which you southerners are now getting is Still Game - this is a fantastic comedy. In series one there's a great comeback to being called a bit podgy... "That's because every time I shag your wife, she makes me a sandwich" Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: Rod Paradise on December 14, 2005, 01:42:50 PM One of the best which you southerners are now getting is Still Game - this is a fantastic comedy. In series one there's a great comeback to being called a bit podgy... "That's because every time I shag your wife, she makes me a sandwich" John Hartson was alleged to have said similar to Barry Ferguson when he asked why he was so fat in an Old Firm game :D Title: Re: Greatest British Comedy Of All Time Post by: AndrewT on December 14, 2005, 05:44:38 PM One of the best which you southerners are now getting is Still Game - this is a fantastic comedy. In series one there's a great comeback to being called a bit podgy..."That's because every time I shag your wife, she makes me a sandwich" I think it was originally Glenn McGrath to Zimbabwean Eddo Brandes after Brandes had played and missed at a McGrath delivery: "Oi, Brandes, why are you so fat?" to which Brandes replied: "Cos every time I f*** your wife she gives me a biscuit!" Apparently even the Australian slips were in hysterics. AS for best British comedy programmes, most of the usual contenders have been mentioned (though anyone who didn't notice the huge decline in Only Fools and Horses once Grandad died needs to watch the early ones again). For real comedy/pathos, OFAH doesn't come close to Steptoe and Son. I notice our Caledonian friends missed out the almost forgotten Absolutely (which was three sixths Scottish). Chris Morris is also a god amongst men (even Nathan Barley wasn't that awful). AS correctly noted, Spaced was the most innovative new comedy of the past fifteen years - it really tried to be more than 'just a sitcom'. Ironically, the current vogue (thanks to The Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm) is comedy which looks under-produced - all handheld cameras and naturalistic acting. Thankfully, this has led to 'the funniest new comedy since Father Ted' (copyright me) - The Thick Of It (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/thickofit/ (http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/thickofit/)). This was on BBC4 earlier this year (being repeated this weekend and on BBC2 sometime after the New Year) and it's 'Yes Minister getting mauled by lions' (copyright me, again). A fantastic political satire, which is also roll-around-on-the-floor-laughing funny. It will no doubt lose the Best New Comedy award at tonight's British Comedy Awards to Extras, because the official comedy world's opinion is that Ricky Gervais (and Little Britain) are the funniest things ever, no matter how lazy their current efforts are, and if you disagree you are some kind of horse-fiddler. If you have BBC4, watch it this weekend, else don't miss it when it comes to terrestrial. |
