Why has Rooks been banned for life?

Shieldsy told me it was him who put up the posts Rooks was banned for.

The punishments given to individuals over this stuff are not corresponding with their individual actions.

This place is becoming a bit of a joke.

Leaving aside the facts and whys and wherefores of the the particular incidents here which were handled privately and continue to be so sadly the mods were put in a very tough spot indeed here.

We, none of us, ever want to ban and in doing so lose any member but when it involves people we've known for a while, in many cases like personally and when they often make a big contribution it does especially sting.

the trace on the ips was done on tuesday by the mod team when the mods got back from the weekends updates, on tuesday i was in hospital for an operation i had on wednessday and only had limited access on my phone so took no part into the investigation or the bans. i have every faith in the mod team and have read the many post on the mods board on this issue and believe the evidance holds up

i could look into the evidance myself but i feel that the mod team as a whole are much better at this than me on my own so cant see me bringing up anything new.

as ben has already emailed me accusing me of having a problem with him (which i dont) i am unsure if i would even want to spend the next few hours looking through the evidance (which is pretty strong) or go to my bed and recoup as i was planning too

Sigh - my post wasn't meant to be a dig - if I want to say something about you I will say it straight out. I just choose not to in most circumstances, I prefer to keep the peace.

My post was meant to remind you that despite your ban you managed to deal with it to your satisfaction, in other words if Rookie wants to come back I'm sure he will be in touch, make a good case for it, and you can help him because you've done it before.

No point reinventing the wheel imo, use your experience to help him if you want to, and if he wants to come back.

I've been quietly thinking it'd blow over, the Lads will be back and that's the end of it, but it takes everyone working together for that to happen.  Would be nice if everyone just gave it a chance to blow over and let the peeps involved get it sorted in time.  Dragging it on only keeps it raw for both sides and sorting it takes more time.

From what I've heard, there were loads of pics posted and comments made.  Some were posted from Ben's account, some posted from the other Lad's accounts.  Who posted them?
  
If it's gone down differently, the onus is on Ben to go to the mods and make his case.  Maybe he should approach them.  Pretty sure the mods don't usually chase down banned members for an alternative explanation to events.

FWIW, I've nothing against the Lads and hope they get it sorted, but going into pit bull mode won't get it done.

Of course you are entitled to your opinion, however, we can only act on the evidence at hand and in this case it was very black and white.

Please remember you are only hearing one side, and are not seeing all the information that is available to the mods.

It seems to me that if this was a case of mistaken identity (which at the moment I am happy to assume it wasn't and that the Mods made the right decision) then how stupid of Rookie to either leave his computer logged on or let someone know his log on details.

And how sad that so called 'friends' would post something that could be blamed on him. Bad choices all over the place imo.

In the email explaining the Ban to Ben it says....

Ben. Permanent ban, specifically for the disgusting posts made on the Shieldsy account from your IP address late that night once your own account had been coolered, which you would have known were completely unacceptable.

then it says below...

Please take the following as a strict final warning: If someone posts on your account, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE! No exceptions. If you are fitted up by your mates on the forum, you are going to be assumed to have posted. The mods cannot be expected to know who is posting on which account so often, that we have no option but to enforce this.

I actually think this is very fair. He should be responsible. And obv he wasn't.

A final warning after he's been perma banned does seem a bit strange.

I didn't want to do this publically but seeing as there is so much part-informed speculation

Several accounts were initially coolered late last Thursday night after pornographic and then written inappropriate posts were made

At between 1-2am last Friday morning the account for Shieldsy became active, having been dormant since 21st August 2009. All previous posts from this account were on one specific IP address

On this account were then posted over the course of an hour around 30 posts that were way OTT. I mean, really eye opening stuff. By then the few mods that were on earlier were offline. I was travelling to Dublin and was receiving PMs as I was logged on by a mobile device that allowed me to view the forum but not to take any "mod action" such as deletions etc, but I got hold of another mod and asked him to remove and cooler. Ironically I was travelling to Dublin with Cos/GreekStein while all this was going on and he was by my side!

All the accounts remained coolered over the weekend. We had two live updates on with the majority of the mod team involved in those in one way or another. No other mods were around

On our return on Tuesday we set about establishing who had done what, what needed to happen, This took about 48 hours. Our difficulty with many of these accounts is that often as pranks and jokes people post on each others accounts. We also had an additional problem as through the weekend about 20 spoof accounts had been set up with IP matches to exisiting members accounts currently coolered.

I speak for the whole of the mods team when I say we know that the lads are good lads, like a prank and all the rest of it. However the events of Thursday 1st/Friday 2nd went way too far. Really bad stuff. If we were to do nothing because they were popular members, close to Flushy etc then we might as well have turned the lights off and walked away. We felt that strongly about it

Anyway our research showed us incontrovertible proof that the "Shieldsy" posts made after all the other accounts were banned were made from Rookie's IP address. The only people previously to have posted from this address were Rookie, Ismene and a spoof account "Fred BoylePoker"

One of only two conclusions was possible. Either someone at that IP address had access to the Shieldsy account and postsed on it or that Shieldsy himself was there at 2am on a Friday morning and posted it, presumably (though not definitively) with the knowledge of others there

This was the background to which the Rookie ban was placed and a mod email to three people was sent midweek giving them timeframes and reasons for bans. 

Subsequent to that, and following Cos beginning this thread (and I indicated my disappointment and annoyance with this to Cos tonight) Ben/Rookie and I have spoken privately and I have summarised that to the mods team

It is only fair for me to point out in the interests of balance that Rookie told me absolutely tonight that he did not make the posts on the Shieldsy account. The rest of the conversation is private.

Nevertheless a dialogue has begun, which is probably a good thing.

What I am trying to do Cos, is show you (and we talked in detail about these sorts of things In Ireland) that there was a consistency to our approach, that the decisions were logical and made with the best interests of the forum in mind

Does this mean we are happy with what has happened? far from it. The mods team was put in an awful spot

Is there a way back? dunno, but we're all ears from those concerned

because most IPs are not permant most ISP will release them every few days or weeks
so a person might have the same IP for a month then get a new one a few months later
or the rebooting of a router will often change an ip assigned to a certain line

infact many reasons which make it hard to keep an eye on people

but in this case it would of needed a 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000+ to 1 shot for rookie to release his IP shieldsy to have been given it within 2 hours then rookie to have it back less than an hour later

because, we also have evidence that in the 48 hours subsequent to the bans both the Rookie and Shieldsy accounts tried to access the forum but from their own IP addresses, not the same IP address

Damn Rooks runs bad. Shieldsys doesn't use his account for months and then just happens to use it that night from his IP address to post inappropriate posts just several hours after Rooks has been temp banned. ;carlocitrone; We can speculate what happened but I suspect the mods generally act in the best interests of the forum and not in it just for the money and glory.

I can kind of see why the mods have made the decision they have.

As most of the posters on this thread are more invested friendship-wise than I am one way or the other, I thought i'd throw in my hopefully neutral opinion.

Some of the people mentioned that have been banned are interesting posters and generally liked in the community if i'm not mistaken. They are big parts of the community, and thus represent the community to an extent.

There's nothing funny at all about posting porn on Blonde, no matter how drunk you are as far as I'm concerned. As was mentioned earlier in the thread, if these were not regular posters on blonde, a ban would be a non-question.

Obviously there's controversy over who made the posts, but debate on that point can surely only go so far. That's for the moderators/banned members to sort out.

It seems to me that the angry posters near the front were caught on the term "Life Ban", a term which suggests blanket-damning of those concerned with no debate, something that would indeed seem unfair considering that those accused deny the 'charges'.  The angry early-posters have been part of this forum far longer than I have, and I've already heard of 'Life Bans' being overturned, of course they'll be dialogue over it.

How the mods could have acted very differently I find it hard to see. This is the first forum i've really followed, but these people seem to put up with a lot considering they're not paid.

Surely u just use an ip changer or dongle and open new account and no-one ever knows if are u banned for life?

I mean its hardly a big thing gettign banned from a poker forum!!!!!!!! Not exactly a life changing moment

Sorry to derail- finally got around to buying the book in ur name? Any good if u read it?

The first 100 or so pages are a tad slow and it can be difficult to get you head round why he decides on using the concept of "dicelife" especially the way it is introduced. Luke Rhinehart's next book "the search for the diceman" was a better read.

the concept was a bit better than the result. still an interesting read though.

However recent developments have added a whole new dimension to this and hope blonde can recover. Personally a few more life bans need to be given out or blonde may be creating an unhealthy precendent.

This is all probably a bit too late as the horse has already bolted. Over the last year or so, there has been an ever increasing us and them situation on here. I think part of the problem is the mods don't properly represent the full scope of regular members on here anymore. A lot of the regular posters on here are 20-something male internet poker players, certainly a bigger proportion than in the past. Yet the youngest member of the mod team is well into their thirties if not older (correct me if I am wrong), there is very little representation for a significant % of the posters. I think this is a particular problem as the younger members certainly have a different way of looking at the boundaries of what of good taste/ a joke is and what isn't.

The mods have particularly thankless job imo especially as blonde have quite an open policy compared to just about every other forums I have been part of. Tikay always wanted to be quite open about certain stuff on forum in the early days, this has led to a situation where a lot of decisions are questioned and debated on forum. When maybe in some cases attempting to have an open discussion but then saying it is the mods decision is just counter productive.

Thought this was a bit harsh Greg since you don't know them too well and also tarring us all with the same brush (to some extent) tsk tsk !

I think he is being VERY generous considering recent developments.

I've been asked to make this post and to point out a couple of facts:

Rooks did not start this thread nor did he ask Cos to; In fact Rooks was happy to take the punishment for what he had done.

There was no contention on the punishment for the Olsen twin pics etc only on the fact that he was blamed for posting inappropriate remarks using the "Shieldsy" account.

Much has been made by some of the facts - and by that i do not mean the mods - I refer directly to diceman who clearly believes from his recent posts that he knows more than those involved. I also call into question the logic that links recent events and Rook's ban - to be quite frank you seem to talk a lot of tosh on matters you are not privy to. I did try to advise you of this personally - and yet you continue in your public efforts.

The fact is - that plenty of posts on this thread state certain things as "facts" which are actually incorrect -For example - the "faeces" photo. If in doubt ask the mods to confirm that Rooks was not responsible for it: I'm sure if asked they will and yet he is the one being blamed publicly for said material.

Furthermore, Rooks was happy to serve his time for admittedly a stupid high jinx moment, however - how many of you would serve a punishment for something you didn't do without appealing the decision?

Rooks appreciates the efforts of the moderating team - especially those who are reviewing the evidence. In all honesty he'd prefer this thread died a death as whilst the rumblings and conspiracies continue, it detracts from the truth.

Leaving aside the issue of the recent bans, which has been discussed a lot on the thread matters moved on to slanging matches about a difficult issue that emerged briefly on the forum today.

The mods are in a no win position on this one, well at least until their collective brainpower whirrs into action, and for the time being would rather things got sorted out off-forum between those invloved, it not actually being a blonde Poker matter per se. This view might change, don't know yet
