Title: Irish Open Trip Report
Post by: GreekStein on April 11, 2010, 08:36:23 PM
I was meant to have done one of these by now, as promised on my staking thread but having come back on monday night I literally jumped straight back into a busy week at work.

Part 1

The Irish Open is not an event I envisaged playing. I rarely play satellites, the event is obviously well out of my personal bankroll and a much higher buy in than events I can play in my deal with Niall Blakey (blonde member Blatch).

Greek Easter normally falls a few weeks apart from English Easter but this year it fell on the same weekend. Being such family oriented people I was under strict instruction from mammaGreek that I couldn't even travel to Notts to play the DTD £300. We had the family invited here. Sigh. On the monday lunchtime I'm checking my facebook at work and see a message from Brian 'BAM' Martin and promptly call him. As it transpires, a Romanian student had won a seat to the event in a 4000 runner freeroll but was unable to attend. He posted on a forum I'd never visited before called Punter's Lounge and was going to give away the seat. I think obviously a very inexperienced guy with poker full stop and just unaware of what he could do in the situation. I think Brian saw the message early and said something along the lines of 'take your post down you muppet, I'll get someone to take the seat and I'll be in touch'. Brian has a conversation with the guy and he adds me on facebook. Initially I'm under the impression I'm going to play the event on a one off 50-50 deal with the guy. However, our first convo was something like this...

Cos: Yo Romania
Alex: Alright Olive head
Cos: So I understand you can't make the Irish Open and are wanting to give the seat away?
Alex: Yeah.
Cos: Cool, what did you have in mind?
Alex: Well, I want 350 euros and 10% of your action.

I obviously now wait for a few minutes while he types out that he also wants $2k on full tilt or something. Not to be.

Cos: Well kid, you drive a hard bargain. I was only gonna give you 250 but seeing as you seem a nice guy I'll do 350.

Now after this I was still a little wary but I'd seen screenshots of him winning the sat and email correspondence with a guy from Paddypower, who I checked actually worked there and made sure everything was ok. I transferred half the money before and the other half once the seat was in my name. Wiiii I was finally going to Ireland to play my biggest ever tourney.

I asked Brian if he wanted a % in return but he insisted a Guinness would do. I planned on giving Brian some money if I cashed anyway but all this was proper run good stuff.

The savings I have aren't accessible at the moment so I was keen to sell off a little of my action in order to freeroll the trip. I ask Brian if he's ok with that and I get a thumbs up. He might make Jack Dee look like the happiest man ever but he's a good lad is Brian. Complete briefcase wanker though obv.

The staking thread was a bit of a mega sigh....

Part 2 to follow.

meh bit harsh.

Obviously naive but he's a Romanian student who won the seat in a freeroll. I think he was more than happy with 10% of my action and 350 euros at the time. He's also not emmersed in the poker world like us and doesn't know what's what. I think he was going to give the seat away.

I mean I knew I was getting it at way less than what it was worth but I wasn't going to say anything!

I will say it because I don't expect anyone else will.

I think it was out of order to take advantage of the guys obvious lack of knowledge and vulnerability in taking the seat off him for €350 and 10%.

I know people will say it's a cut-throat world and all that but just because the guy didn't know any better doesn't make it ok to steam in and totally exploit him.

Punters Lounge must be a trainwreck of a forum,i'd have thought any moderators there would have at least made the guy aware of the kind of money he could ask for for the ticket.

Glad he gets a bit more due to you getting a good score in it at least, but he shouldn't have had to rely on you binking to see that kind of return.

the guys a romainian student last time i checked the life style there isnt as lavish as it is in the UK 350E€ is alot of money although he could of gotten more there is more than likely no chance in hell he would of been able to afford a trip to dublin to play the event and 350€ will go along way to paying his expenses

this is possibly the thing that confuses me most on blonde, the bizzarre singling out of one word as unacceptable

there are a number of words that are unacceptable on blonde and some we frown apon but tolerate if used sparely and in context

the word in question here is a personal hatred of mine and saw me get banned from the Championship manger forum (before it changed to FM) when i reported over 365 uses of the word in under an hour

the mods were fully supportive in my views on this and it was agreed the term wasnt acceptable
but obviously we cant make a simple request on the forum without getting questioned and
asked to justify ourselfs
btw
this morning i had cornflakes for breakfast and tomorrow i plan on having alpen (with no added sugar)
i belive reddog is hoping for a full english and ginger is hooping for breakfast in bed while kinboshi is usaully to busy for breakfast meanwhile tighty is having all of the above.

is there anything else you guys want to know

ps sorry greakstein for going off on a rant on your great trip report i look forward to part 2 and i will proberly delete this post tomorrow when i have cooled down a little

Nah that's cool man. I appreciate your opinion.

I think it's one of those where we'll have to agree to disagree. He knows the value of the seat and was going to give it away.

Aside of the 10% he got, (could have just as easily been zilch) he got 350 more than initiailly anticipated.

I don't see why I should turn around and say to a 21 year old guy, you should sell it for more. Truth be told I probably would have had to pass it up if he was wanting 2k for it.

Before making the comments some of you have made I think you should have taken into account that the Romanian student who is a member of Punters Lounge is quite capable of reading English and may see these posts on your forum. He may well have let his seat go for less than he might have got but for some of you to then insult him is a bit rich IMHO.

Thankyou for this.

"It may still be objected that moron parents are likely to have imbecile or idiot children. There is not much evidence that this is the case. The danger is probably negligible."

I really lol'd at this. I didn't realise that these terms actually had an IQ value attached to them. What a fantastic idea!!

This being the case I can't see how being called one of these terms could be deemed as an insult or indeed offensive as it's either true or false.

If I were to call someone with an IQ of 51 an imbecile he could just laugh in my face at my foolishness as he was in fact a moron. How silly would I look?!?!?

Seriously though imagine saying that sentence and actually meaning it, the bit in bold type I mean. Wow. You'd have to be pretty sick to say that.

I can however see the funny side of it as well but I guess that comes from years of watching Southpark.

I knew they were all originally used as just purely descriptive terms, it highlights the irrationality of only strongly objecting to one of them. In theory if you were going to ban only one of them it should be 'idiot' as this is the most insulting.

Glad he gets a bit more due to you getting a good score in it at least, but he shouldn't have had to rely on you binking to see that kind of return.

/pissing on your parade

TBF the guy didn't lack knowledge and vunerability what he lacked was time.  He was prepared to go to Dublin but a couple of days before he had problems that prevented him going.  When he contacted Paddy they said he had until Wednesday morning to do the transfer which gave him a day to find a buyer.  Also any buyer was on short notice to arrange flights, accomm etc.

On top of this the guy had expenses in his package that he kept and he was given more than the deal he originally wanted, everyone was happy, so whats the problem?

[ ] good read grimstein

Well this certainly paints a better picture than the op,if there was these time constraints then fair enough,I blame Cos for trying to over-dramatise the story in the op personally.  :D

Oh and wp,nice score.

he never told me he had expenses Brian. Led me to believe it was just the bare seat he won.

Before making the comments some of you have made I think you should have taken into account that the Romanian student who is a member of Punters Lounge is quite capable of reading English and may see these posts on your forum. He may well have let his seat go for less than he might have got but for some of you to then insult him is a bit rich IMHO.

I did post defending him colu but for some reason my post has been deleted

I'm not sure why? as it never mentioned the R word ??

(sure would be nice to know why)

Brian, there was a big ruck on this thread this morning

you must have posted in the middle of it, sorry let me try and fetch it back

It seems every thread that greekstein starts causes a ruck

Can we ban him pls

History? Care to explain?

Bumder is just joking flops.

I'll do part 2 later this evening, just on lunch at work atm.

I don't feel I ripped anyone off or behaved poorly in the situation. The guy had the information readily available to him about what the seat was worth and what he could do. Why should I say 'maaaaate sell it to me for more than that'? Guy is a grown up, not my business to be telling him to sell it for more.

Btw Murph are you the guy, who along with Walshy were anti-railing railtard in a final online a while ago?

No,not my style at all.

I got a fairly abusive pm from railtard accusing me of the same thing and didn't have a clue what he was on about.

No prob lol.

I heard there was an argument on this thread between you and him and he was convinced you were a guy called Murph / similar that was going off at him in chat one night.

Anyway, glad you gave your opinion on the thread. Made for interesting thought but I still feel I've done nothing wrong.

Yeah there was(as he was talking to me thinking I was the guy you are talking about)

I have pm'd him back asking where the chat thing happened, but he's not replied yet.

And yeah like I said BAM's post cleared up a few things with regard to the buying of the ticket.

Trip report

Constatine robs romanians
Cos flies to dublin with tighty
Cos wins some €€€€€€€€€
Cos flies home, survives, we all sigh.
Turns out Cos & Brian Martins IQ's multiplied together makes them a combined pair of imbecile idiots.
