Pretty much what I would have expected from a subscriber to that odious organ.

It's not fake.

You have to remember what that paper stands for, and some of the vile stuff that their columnists put out.

Littlejohn once wrote:  "Does anyone really give a monkey's about what happens in Rwanda? If the Mbongo tribe wants to wipe out the Mbingo tribe then as far as I am concerned that is entirely a matter for them."

That just about sets the tone for that pathetic excuse for a paper.

This is from the letters page. Just one man's opinion isn't it?
Big jump to say he represents all the readers.
This would never be reported as "People of Yeovil give their opinion on the World Cup"

Ironic that he is a nob but he doesn't understand how the one works on his telly.

If the only two papers available were the Telegraph and the Mail... I'd pick the Mail.

Thankfully it's never quite come to that. The local corner shop is well stocked with copies of gay porn magazines that I can buy instead.

I very much doubt (and hope) that letter would be printed in any other national newspaper.

It's just a little Englander having a small rant. The sort of thing you'd hear in any pub on any day of the week across the length and bredth of the country.

There are no pubs in your area then, just cocktail lounges, wine bars and gastro pubs.

By definition, it's not a proper pub unless it contains at least one loud mouthed bigot who wants to send someone back to somewhere.

Well, not really... I mean you wouldn't say he necessarily represents all the readers. But I don't think you'd find the Guardian printing his letter.

If we're talking about the majority then I'm going to take a wild guess that he's right though.

Obviously someone gives a monkey's but I'll bet there's not many. Plenty will pretend they care but I'll bet it's way down most people's priority lists.

You're probably right in a sense. But I think that in order to be right, you're interpreting his statement very generously - ignoring all its nuance - as well as massively over-simplifying the question.

Not trying to get you to bite mate. There's loads of easier ways to do that.

It was a genuine comment from a person who knows very little about Mr Littlejohn or his views.

The way he puts this across is a bit harsh but seriously who does care?

My list of priorities doesn't include Rwanda, Umbongo bongo land, France, Spain, Germany etc... even that much about the general population of the UK if I'm honest.

In my opinion the majority of people in the UK just get on with their lives in happy ignorance of what's going on outside of their circle.

I'm not a bigoted person in any way and I don't wish hurt upon anybody. However, if some tribe wants to have a big rumble with another tribe I won't be losing any sleep over it.

Obviously I'm just taking this statement in isolation. If you combine it with other statements he's made then I imagine it looks far worse.

Tribe having a rumble with another tribe?  Is this a level?

As for Littlejohn, the bloke is a bigoted idiot and this is highly representative of his way of thinking.

This is the problem with these kind of statements.

At no point has the statement or yourself referenced the Rwandan genocide. He mentions Rwanda but how am I supposed to know that he's talking about the killing of 800000 people?

I hate to admit this as well but it's hard to say that I actually cared. Sure I would prefer that it never happened but it did and there's nothing I can do about it and it didn't affect my life at all.

These kind of things are way down mine and I'm guessing many other's lists of priorities.

Discussions down the pub:

England / world cup - lots
Politics - a fair bit
Women - plenty
Cost of diesel - loads
Rwandan genocide - Erm.....

Look at this tiny list above. Prioritise them for yourself. How high up is the genocide in Rwanda?

Yes it was a humanitarian travesty of gargantuan proportions I don't deny that one bit but I'm still struggling to honestly say that it affected me enough for me to really care.

Tell you what then mate let's put all these tragedies at the top of our priority list and actually do something about it.

We'll put everything else to one side because clearly this is more important than other trivial things that are going on.

We'll try to form some kind of group and actually do something pro-active and speak up for what we believe are the important things.

I'll meet you tonight  about 7.30 and we'll sort it.

That sound good or have you got something more important to do?

So what great thing have you done to try to help? Obviously you like to berate other people for being ignorant of the situation but ask yourself honestly what have you done?

Have you donated to charities that try to help?

Have you donated clothes etc. to try to help?

Have you made the ultimate sacrifice and actually given up some of your time to go out there and help where it really matters?

I'd rather be ignorant of something as tragic as this than know everything there is to know and still do sweet F.A. about it.

I'm not breating you for being ignorant at all, I'm criticising you for being smug about it & putting down those who aren't by asking what they do about the things they care about.

As to your nosy questions:

1. Why would you care, you're proud of not giving a f***?

2. There's a huge great gap between knowing everything there is to know (which no-one has claimed) and doing F.A. and knowing a bit & doing what you can. Not everyone needs to join Medecin Sans Frontiers to care or to have helped.

Don't try to cover up your failings by applying guilt to those with the conscience enough to care about things.

I'm not being smug about it. I'm also not proud of not giving a f**k.

What I'm being is honest about my priorities in life.

As much as i wish these tragedies had never happened I am far more concerned about many other things that are incredibly trivial in comparison.

I'm not trying to make you or anybody else feel guilty to cover up my "failings". Nobody should feel guilty about doing nothing. It is no different to the majority of the population.

As for the nosy questions. They were just satisfying my curiosity.

I agree entirely that we don't need to join Medecin Sans Frontiers to show we care but seriously what have you done?

I'm not trying to lay any guilt on you at all and there's no need to publicly state what you've done but just ask yourself the question.

You slate me which is fair enough. I did nothing to help at all. Despite knowing what happened I admit I did nothing. I like to think I would have helped if I could but I'd be lying to myself. I could easily have donated a few hundred quid but I didn't. I went and spent it on beer and strippers instead.

This isn't being smug. This is being honest.

I have thought about this tragedy several times in the past. Basically it's when I see it mentioned somewhere. Are you the same? Or do you just think about it randomly because it's at the forefront of your conscience. Believe me I have spent time thinking about it. It brings a lump to my throat when I see it on the news. It's capable of bringing a tear to my eye. I still haven't done anything about it. Do I care? Yes I care. Do I do anything about it? No I don't.

Did you send as much as a quid to help? If so then you did much more than me. If you only think about it when it pops up on a forum or in the newspaper then I'm afraid you don't care any more than I do.

You just like to pretend you do to cover up your own failings.

Oh come on - a master class in the old switcharound, but as a serious debate that's got nothing.

I know and admit my failings (at least to myself) - but what I don't do is start surmising how much someone else does and slagging them for it to make me feel better.

Do I do enough? Probably not. Do I try to do what I can? Probably not hard enough, but I try.

I'm not judging you, that's for you to do, but please stop backing up and echoing the arguments of a 'celeb' who plays to the lowest common denominator & encourages thoughtlessness and narrow minded values - and then makes them out to be a good thing.

My daughter asked me for a pound this morning before setting off for school.

I asked what for, she said everyone had to bring in a pound for her form tutor who is sending it to an orphanage in South Africa.

I didn't give her the pound and told her to ask her tutor if there was an orphanage in Manchester I could send two pounds to instead!

Am I bad?

No - the SA orphans would only waste the pound on vuvuzelas.

It's akin to having a jigsaw and saying you want to concentrate on the top left side of puzzle. You're not going to solve it unless you work on the entire thing.

I'd give her a quid even if it was for Davey Newth

Don't wouldn't want my kid to be the only one without a pound.

Maybe I'm bad too then, for different reasons.

+1.

Not fair to make your kid face that awkward situation

Pretty sure Brian didn't do that though. He prob gave like £3.20 as he's minted and makes additional moneys from grimmings

Nah I gave her fcuk all as I was scared she was going to grim me, as the last person who grimmed me left me mentally scarred....I just keep getting visions of smashing plates and kebabs everytime I open my wallet
