Title: Fishomania XVII Final today
Post by: Matt.NFFC. on July 17, 2010, 10:26:54 AM
Being a very keen match angler myself, this event always keeps me glued to SkySports all afternoon so I thought I'd post my views as there may be a bit of value on Betfair if you get it right.

Things to look out for:

"End Pegs" in match fishing tend to have a bit of an advantage as you don't have an angler on both sides of you, so technically you could have more fish in your swim to try and catch.  Last years match was won by end peg 16, however this year the end pegs (1 and 16) will have a "pleasure angler" next to them to get rid of the possible advantage.  We will wait and see if this happens.

If there is a good breeze blowing into your peg, then this is good news, as fish follow the wind!  Tactics will be to feed down the side for later in the match when the fish are confident to feed there.

Best bait on the day IMO will be to fish chopped worm and Casters.  Casters are a maggot which is getting ready to hatch into a fly.  They're nice and crunchy and fish love 'em.

Not suprisingly, peg 16 is only a 4/1 shot and time will tell whether the "blocker" anglers have an influence on the catch rate of the end pegs.

This article might help you pick a winner, or some value.  I'll be on Tommy Pickering as he's a very good angler, and for a bit of value, end peg 1.

My Dad's keen on fishing and has been watching this on and off today, he kind of knows Tom and tipped him too, was a bit unlucky in the last half hour or so to get pipped at the post.

Always next year.

lol, I know where you're coming from, I feel the same way about fishing, but like everything, there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.  My Dad's well into it and keeps me up to date on a Monday morning (we work together) about the weekends fishing, there's quite a bit too it.

sigh, i wasnt actually knocking Fishing. Just, being 'stuck to the tv watching it' made me laugh a bit.

Personally, i would have no problem at all with someone slating a hobby i might have and wouldnt care in the slightest if they hated it or thought it was 'effin shite'.

I know absolutely nothing about fishing but I caught the back end of a preview of this the other day and one of the guys in this is apparently competing at his local lake he uses all the time.  Struck me that if ever there was a sport where there was massive home advantage it must be fishing.  Anyone know who it is?

dewi i used to fish against a lot of these guys. tim nash captained browning hot rods who i fished with for a while and you can count him out for this match as he is not a man made venue  reg.

andy may has drawn in the area where all the fish are (in summer they follow the wind) he is also the red hot fav and a venue specialist. the weather is due to change for the match and a lot of pratice these guys have put in will be wasted as methods like fishing up in the water do not work as well in the rain. carp cruise looking for feed and when venues are solid they come to the sound of the feed hiitting the surface. obv when raining this method becomes in effective. barbel (naturally a river species) have been heavily stocked in this pool and will count massively and andy's experience could count. he will be red hot fav but in a 16 runner horse race 5/1 is a good fave and believe me he will not be outside the top 3 in this match if it fishes well or hard.

kieron rich and john  arthur are the other world class anglers in the field with kieron having slightly the better draw (6 to 10 were fav) and kieron is a very aggressive angler and if it fishes well he has a chance, the harder it fishes then the more level the playing field as a couple of lumps (big carp ) can put you in with a shout.

i fished week in week out with nathan watson and mark wainwright. nathan is a previous winner and won last years champion of champions but the draw is not good for him. he will fish positive but could easily over feed for the peg and finish up mid field. wanger will be shitting his pants and shaking like a leaf but is a top lad but wont be in the top 5.

word of warning about end pegs (1 & 16). when you are on the end of a match if you have an end peg you have all the lake to your left/right to attract fish from. that is why these pegs are fav and have won  so many matches. however here at cudmore they use blocker anglers so the guys on the end will actually have anglers in the next peg to them that are not actually in the match. 16 is the better of the two pegs but i will be shocked if it wins the match but it will finish high.

probably are not telling you anything that tight lines host keith arthur is saying. actually had a chat with tikay about keith because their respective programmes are in the next studios...

for me Andy May at 5/1 is massive but fishing is more unpredictable than horses

oh and by the way the home international will be the most one sided event in match fishing. do not be suprised if the english team catch more than ireland , scotland and wales put together. only jamie mason (english guy fishing for scotland) can live with any of the 4 english guys. Alan Scotthorne for england is a multiple world champion but ask him who the best carp angler in the uk is and he will say Jamie Mason

Right I'm on Andy May @9/2

I match fish regularly and will be on Andy May (venue regular in a fancied area) and one of the end pegs (1 or 16) depending on where the wind is blowing.....I expect the method feeder to dominate early with worm and caster on the pole later on to play a part.

Who do you fish for Matt? And where do you live. I fished for Scunthorpe when we won the div 1 national then represented England in the world club championships in 96'. We competed against Barnsley in the drennan league so you can imagine that team honours were rather slim in that. I fished a lot of winter league semi's as it was always hull and us who dominated.

Individually I was backed by Browning and did a lot of work for them at trade shows such as the NEC etc. I fished the Uk champs ran by Tom Pickering and every year went to Ireland and fished the classic. I could talk all day about fishing but don't go anymore. Infact I gave all my team mates my gear about 5 years ago. Think I had about £20k worth of gear including top of the range poles, rive box and all accessories but most gutting are things like black magic's for bagging in Ireland and the biggest loss of all normark originals like 2x titans , micro lite, multi tips, fast feeders etc. Browning just could not make a rod to compete.

I just fish for my small local club but, living in Farndon, I have the Trent literally 500 yards from my door.  Never fished at that level before, but stick me on a commercial and I'm confident I'd do ok.

oh man you live in what we call gods country. collingham is my fav venue but from being 14 we used to set out south towards newark and the A1 to do all our fishing. newark dyke, holme marsh and hoveringham and caythorpe all hold memories. i think the last trent national i fished i was drafted into Handsworth Angling from sheffield and leading up i drew next to Tom Pickering in the Dunham Dubs in a practise match (back when they got 3/400 turning out) and i had 70lb of bream and he weighed 45lb...2nd and 3rd in the match.

easiest match was against the Trent men (ran by tim aplin from notingham matchman supplies and at the time they were the best river team in the country). we drew at home and ellected to fish on the river ancholme which is our local venue. they came down the weekend before to fish one of the matches as a practise and as the river was stood the won all the major prizes fishing punch. of course what they did not realise was that going into the humber it is tidal and so stands one weekend and runs off the next. just before the all in the river starts to pull and it was comical watching em running around looking for stones to put in their punch to get it to the bottom. we all balled it and caught skimmers and battered them.

wow just thinking about your area i remember bream matches at attenborough gravels. did you go to hallcroft in its day?

eveyone starts on the feeder chucked over towards the island. 1, 2, 3 are catching as the wind is blowing into this bank. 16,15 and 14 struggling because the wind is blowing off this bank. as they  move onto the pole line expect andy may to click up a gear.

sorry dewi. my mates say the pole line never got going for andy may. there seemed to be more  feeding fish in the area of peg 1. it was next to peg 6 of the ladies comp and 5 won their match so was a better area.

Never been to Hallcroft mate, don't travel far for my fishing...last week we had a club match at Lakeview and it fished rock hard.....29lb won and I was 4th with a crappy 16lb.  To say it was a carp pool, I could only get a bite right over on single red maggot.

Had a bike down to the start of the dyke the other day (took all of 2 mins to get there!!) and a bloke was swinging in a 3oz roach on the pole.  Nearly turned round to fetch me gear!

BTW, if you got yer gear, get yourself down here when it cools and we get a bit more water/colour in the Trent, and you can show me how it's done :)
