Title: How long to get good?
Post by: maikl on August 06, 2010, 06:37:42 AM
Im at the point where i can sit down and play. But when i comes to hands i have a tought time remembering what beats what sometimes, just cause im new. Well the question that I have is how long will it take me to get good at poker and whats the best ways about doing it?

i would suggest playing online to learn rather than playing in a casino.

you can see a lot more hands per hour which is always going to help speed up your learning. Id suggest playing small stakes sit n goes (would advise this over playing with play money just so the money gives u more of an interest in the game) where u can learn the very basics, and get used to the different stages of the game quickly.

   pretty much this.

a well known phrase in poker, is its takes 5 minutes to learn, a life time to master.

playing online to start with is probably the best option, like buzz says you get to see many more hands per hour, so you are gaining experience a lot quicker.

when i started i played small buy in SNG's (sit and goes, single table tournements) after i learned the basics, i then played small buy in tournements online....average $3-5 buy in.

the biggest mistake new players make is playing too many hands, stick to the premiums AA KK QQ WELL MOST PAIRS and AK,AQ,AJ,KQ   once you have learned how to play these hands, then and only then think about bringing other hands into your game.

good luck geordie"beppe di marco" neil

Must be really hard for a new player to get to know the best way to learn the game.

Unfortunately I can't help you with this but if you happen to find a good way in the next day or so please let us know.

Thanks.

Yeah, I've not been on for a while and only just spotted it.  If you'd reported it, the account would have been banned sooner.

reporting it would ruin the fun

I think it's sweet how people take time out to answer these posts properly

The last line's the giveaway Mo. "What's the best ways to go about doing it?"

The inevitable precursor to some kind of spam where they finally found the best way and are now enlightening the masses.

also the fact that op has been posted verbatim on other fora

The OP is based in Kyrgyzstan.  That in itself isn't a reason for banning them, but we've had a string of similar account register from there and what they do is find an old thread and copy the OP.  Usually it's an innocuous-looking post like this one, and it's easy to let it pass.  What happens though is in a few days, weeks or even months, the OP goes back to the thread and edits his OP.  He'll place links in the post, and they'll often be well hidden.  What they're trying to do is obtain these links to improve their search-engine rankings, even though what they're doing will have limited benefit.

Sorry I was just joking, the fave poker player thread looked like one of these pre-spam posts when it started, then it gave birth to blondenders

you reckon? it looked like a get to 300 posts post (which it's safe to assume it was as it was done at the same time as at least one staking request on another forum), not a spammy one
