Title: player of the year
Post by: Jim R on December 22, 2005, 03:41:56 PM
Who would you pick as your player of the year , for me it is out of three players Julian for his first year as a sponsored player William Hill must be very happy, next would be Barry Neville this guy if he gets to a final he wins it how i am still trying to work out but what ever it is it works, but my vote would have to be Alan McClean this guy has a great game and nice with it.

JP Kelly has played a stormer. Darn kiddy, he's too good. Any player of the year thread would be amiss without mentioning him.

I like this thread probably british players of the year really...

Mickey Wernick has to be up at the top, as he is in the rankings. A wsop final table again to add to his record and what a season on th UK scene... Well done Mickey!

Julian had a slow middle of the season but fired on all cylinders at the start and finish, my pick for No.1 next year!

Barry is one off the strangest players you'll meet and one of the funniest, but he cashed at the wsop main event and has gone great guns since then... Whos Vinni Vin???

Burnley John... wsop cash for john in the main aswell, He always seems to sneek through the field and make the final. Pipped at the post for the No.1 spot, I think he'll run it close again next year!

JP Kelly has done wonders this year, and as he does'nt travel to every festival what a record! He is a future wsop winner! just as soon as he is old enough...

So thats my rough picks Stuart Nash is close along with DC and The Camel but I think these people are the names you'll remember from 2005.

Personally i dont think its possible to name a "player of the year" in poker as its all relative as to everyone's own personal goals......

Brian Wilson wins a WSOP bracelet in his first full year playing poker.

Mickey Wernick wins the European player of the year rankings after a year long battle with the likes of John Falconer and Pascal Perrault.

blonde's very own Silo wins a £2 mtt on crypto despite never cashing in a tourney before and after only a few weeks playing tournaments.

Many of you will read the last one and think how on earth can it compare to the first two - but to Silo it'll probably go down as the greatest poker achievment of 2005.....

So in short my nomination for "player of the year 2005" goes to - ANYONE WHO HAS ACHIEVED THE GOALS THEY SET OUT FOR THEMSELVES THIS YEAR!!

Congratulations - and here's to more of the same in 2006.........

What about...

Lawrence Gosney, winner of a WSOP bracelet.

Willie Tann, winner of a WSOP bracelet.

Iwan Jones, winning the London Masters was the highlight of a good year.

.........Jimmy Alp, whatever happened to him in the second half of the year? Had a great start, making 7 finals by April and won a few on the way, then pretty much stopped competing in ranking events.

Yes, terrific Post by Matt.

I really do like the mention of Siilo's success - THATS the essence of the game, it's all relative. And Silo's success was HUGE to him.

I echo most of the other nominees, particularly Barry Neville's extraordinary run of Final Victories, & the steady form of The Boy Thewy, & young JP.

A great thread, I hope it runs & runs.

Player of the year - Rob Hollink

Young Player of the year - Patrick Antonius

I personally think that the European ranking need a bit of a rethink! I would only make the top two events at every festival ranking events. At the moment IMHO the winner is always going to be someone who play all the smaller events in the UK. This is a bit unfair on the top players who live outside the UK like Hollink, Luske, Noah, Helppi, Antonius e.t.c who are never going to be found playing a £200 freezeout on a Mon night in Blackpool or Luton.

Pascal Perrault did, and the last but one festival saw Swedes and Norwegians in large numbers at Luton...Mr Misterggen, Mr red suit etc

The likes of Luske , Hollink etc will always be drawn to the big $$ of the USA tour. This years European top 10 deserve all the credit, as these guys have supported the European tour through out the year and helped places like Walsall, Luton & Blackpool get established on the poker map.

Not everyone can afford to play $10k main events week in, week out so including the smaller entry tournaments into the ranking system gives a lot more chances for more people to get some ranking points.

Think P Jackson must get a mention as player of the year  for his results on-line as well as live.
Also P Maxfield for his 2nd at Bellagio WPT Championship, Lawrence Gosney WSOP win & Mickey Wernick European Rankings

I actually hadn't had a close look at the points criteria for the European ranking till a minute ago.

here it is: http://www.pokerineurope.com/europeanrankings/pointssystem.php

I have changed my mind. The smaller buy in events should keep there ranking status. All i think it needs is a bit of tweaking.

It needs another level or two in the buy in category. e.g 10000 euro EPT Monte Carlo/5000 euro Masterclassics should not be equal to a £750 tournament at the Vic!

Also the number of runners. As the entry factor is currently
Number of Entries/ Entry Factor

1 - 49 / 1
50 - 99 / 2
100 - 149 / 3
150 and above / 4

It should continue like this...

150 - 199 / 5
200 - 249 /6

e.t.c.

The system was devised when there weren't big buy in tournaments with hundreds of runners... and just needs updating slightly!

as vinni sez, tx for the nomination.
not to detract from the great mr tann but i expect all the consistent top tourney players like willie to eventually manouerve themselves into a position where they can snatch a bracelet; gosney definately wasn't considered one of these and as such i think his bracelet warrants top spot (sorry rookie, you just ain't british enough).
milky raised some valid points & i agree the rankings do need a serious make over - i applaud any non brit who makes the top ten as the majority of events are blighty based.
perhaps they should only allow five results from any one country to re-address the balance, and have a seperate UK ranking as well  /:-|

I would just like to add that ranking tourneys should at the very least have house dealers.

let's eastablish some criteria here.

I believe i read somewhere the rankings are bing changed as Ben thinks the should, with higher field brackets and higher buyin brackets. Lets remember it was rarer to get a €4000 even with 300 runners till this year!

Typical subtle Ralph type comment, he always makes me laugh, even when he's not trying

Ralph invited me and Mrs Red over for dinner last week, traditional Jewish fare which he cooked himself, I'm a meat and potatoes man so I was bit aprehensive about chopped liver and the like. I have to say though, it was delicious (Ralph had to take it away in the end so that I would have room for the next course)

Great food, wine, and conversation

Thanks Ralph, we enjoyed it.
