Title: I-Pad stuff? Anyone know any good apps for it?
Post by: Woodsey on October 27, 2010, 04:03:57 PM
Ok was going to get a Macbook pro, but have done a bit of a u-turn and am thinking about an I-pad to replace my old lappy. Basically, I have a desktop at home so only use my lappy when travelling for surfing, storing my pics, watching some films etc so nothing very serious, so a macbook seems a bit excessive for that.

When my desktop needs replacing in a couple of years or so I will get an I-Mac.

One of my mates showed me his the other day and it does look pretty awesome, whizzy and shiny :D

Thoughts?

I-pads are sexy and make you cool.

Unfortunately, after a while, you will realise that you are cool because you have an I-pad but will start to resent that not everybody comments on it. This is ussually the stage where you will find is necessary to mention to everybody you encounter that you, indeed, have an I-pad and that they therefore should also think you're cool.

Obviously that turns you in to a bit of a knob.

If you're OK with being a bit of a knob an I-pad is definitely the way to go.

The same obviously goes for an I-phone or, even worse, an HC desire.

Even if I'm looking for a small device to go travelling with, with all the features I require? :D I'd hate to be labelled a nob because of that.......... :(

They're awesome, I imagine they are ideal if you travel a bit.  I'd quite like one myself but a) can't really afford it and b) would use my iPhone a lot less.

Why not just get a netbook at half the price, which you can actually type on should you need to, and where the screen doesn't need protecting cos it's folded in half when packed? Eee PC or similar.

got an imac iphone ipad for work today took me a while to setup but impressed with the ipad. Just need to get a few apps for officer documents then sorted. Watched a few videos and its very clear and not bad for watching movies on.

I saw someone on the train the other day with an ipad.

The product may look cool, but a person scrolling through an enormous playlist listening to music on it just made it look uncomfortably oversized and unnecessary - not cool.

I also know of at least one person who bought a netbook after finding an ipad just wasn't good enough to do everything on.

If I had enough spare cash I think they'd be a great gadget to have, but there's much better value elsewhere.

Overpriced.....like all apple products. The problem with Apple is that the second you want to do something with one of their devices that they do not want you to, then you are in for a frustrating time.

They are just pretty products. functionality wise you always hear Apple fans trying to justify why they have the product. surely there is no need. Also if you are asking the question then surely there is doubt in your mind already
Still you pays your money and takes your choice.

I wish you well with your new toy

Someone else I know has just bought an iPad, hope you enjoy it!

Speaking of overpriced Next do a 'similar' tablet for £100 that, apparently, would be bad value at a 100th of that.

EDIT: basically because my phone is what I turn to, to fill in dead time to avoid boredom

-Load all my photographs onto a workable size screen
-Edit ohotos
-Do meaningful stuff on the internet rather than just view sites
-Watch films and allow me to play them on big TV's in hotels etc
-Remotely access my home computer
-Play decent games
-Play music out loud to a reasonable volume
-Do all this stuff for 9 hours of battery life

I bought it as a replacement for my lappy that I use for travelling, it does every thing a lappy would do minus the word processing stuff which I never do on my personal lappy anyway. I do a fair few backpacking type holidays, so size and weight of stuff I carry is important to me.

Yep, I just use software on the I-pad to turn them to black and white. I can then brush on the screen with my finger to restore the original colour to the bits I want and can zoom in for the small detail. Here are the originals

Nice work on the photos, what camera and lenses do you use?

For these its-

Canon 40 D Body
Canon EFS 17-85mm F/4-5.6 USM

Want to get a lens with a F/2.8 when cash allows for more creative stuff, they are expensive though.

Have got a better one for longer range stuff as well.

There's a nice 1.8 lens for Canon cameras that's only about £70.  It's quite plasticy but it takes lovely photos and for the price it's always worth having in the bag

I-Swifter is an app that plays flash stuff for anyone interested, so that's one of the few boxes left that needed ticking for me. It seems to work ok from my small amount of use with it so far.

Got a fantastic new app for those who do a bit of cycling, its called cycle meter.

Basically it maps your route and where you are in live time, and also gives you all the stats you could possibly need on your ride. Distance travelled, current speed, average speed, ride time, graphs of your speed, graphs of your elevation so you can see the height profile of your trip etc. It looks like there are loads of options, I haven't even scratched the surface yet.

As mentioned it also maps your trip in live time so you see where you are at any moment in time and decide where you want to go from there. Here is a pic of my trip from Friday night. I reckon this is the best app I've bought yet.......

Will you be mostly riding tarmac? If so, fit some slick tyres and pump em up to the max.

Basically it maps your route and where you are in live time, and also gives you all the stats you could possibly need on your ride. Distance travelled, current speed, average speed, ride time, graphs of your speed, graphs of your elevation so you can see the height profile of your trip etc. It looks like there are loads of options, I haven't even scratched the surface yet.

checking your current speed on an ipad seems a touch dangerous

Will you be mostly riding tarmac? If so, fit some slick tyres and pump em up to the max.

Yeah, my mate is sorting me out. Don't think its a bad thing training with the extra workload though tbh.

Yes you have 2 options. I assume u back up to I tunes on your computer? You can load to your i-pad once you have done that. The latest software also has i-cloud which automatically moves your stuff to all your devices once you have registered them on i-cloud.

They are missing so much and all my laptops can do all of what an iPad can't. Only time I use iPad is when pokering.

There's a cool app called flipboard, it let's you stick all your news in one app including Facebook and twitter.  There are tonnes of magazine and news type things that you can add to it, then when you open flipboard, they're all in one place, it's quite tidy.  Maybe that'd be of interest to you ?

You don't need to keep everything available all the time though - once you've watched something, you've watched it. Of the films you haven't watched, put 3 or 4 on the ipad and swap out afterwards.

Grinding a few games atm; The Hobbit, Jurassic Park, Clash of Clans & The Sims, all pretty good and free :)

Need for Speed Most Wanted is a fiver which is joke cheap considering how incred it is, would very much recommend, 11/10.

iPad help, I keep losing my bookmarks in the browser for some reason.  Give it a day or so and they'll be back but does anyone know why it happens?

Also, since the last update, when I type something, like on here for eg, the keyboard shos in the middle of the screen and the reply box below it, can this be changed too?

Edit - closed lots of apps which sorted the bookmarks

Quite a few results on Google suggest that it is possible. At a price

Or there's always Cloud storage?

Thought iCloud doesn't offere extra storage, it just backs up what you have on your iPad and moves to other devices no?

Real Racing 3 is the absolute nuts.

All the more fun when you refuse to pay any real money and instead grind your way through the cars.

Anyone got any new games to rec? sick of downloading disappointments.

MMX racing is good and better than CSR racing if you like that.

I'm quite into WGT golf.

Though I'm now at the point where if I want to really get ahead in it I'm going to have to shell out actual cash.
