The info is supposed to be totally anonymous, so how do they know if you tell the truth or lie through your teeth?

I think if you put your career as "International Lover World Wide Playboy" it sends an automatic trigger to the Government who send someone round to check your claim.

But what happens if I lie?

In the longer term it might be misleading for your descendants and historians in a 100+ years time when they're doing research.

I did mine online last night.  Didn't seem to really be any room for explaining shared custody of children - pretty sure Hannah's going to end up being counted twice.

The principle is that it's the people in the house on census night

but it doesn't ask that.  it asks 'who usually lives here' then there's no option further down the line (as i expected) asking who was actually at home

The historical principle for 200 years was who is in the property - that got amended to reflect more modern thinking into the wording of 'who usually lives there', but if in doubt the underlying principle of who is actually there would probably be a good fall back position.

EDIT: the aim is to try and avoid counting people twice and to put people in the correct regions - that's why it got changed but in the case of people who are 'usually' at more than one place then where they actually are fits quite well

yes that was my second disappointment, not only did it insist on making me answer questions about my last job, I wasnt going to be in the country anyway on census night and I had hoped to get away with answering about 2 questions....

We get one box to tick, "Gypsy / Irish Traveller"  Two totally different and separate ethnic groups, but just the one box.

Ooops. We sent ours a week or so back. thought it said must be completed BY the 27th lol

Playing devil's advocate, I'd imagine they have pretty similar impacts in terms of local/national government planning (the excuse for the census in the first place).


27th was a suggested date for completion, but it wasn't compulsory. We (along with pretty much everyone I've talked to at work) did it online sometime in the last couple of weeks.

What's the verdict on this? It's either fill in as if I'm a poker player or use the weekend job I had in the co-op when I was 16 :-/

it wants your current or last job, poker's not a job so it's gotta be co-op. bit ridic really but it does ask the year that you last worked if you're not currently working so it'll be fairly accurate

I filled in retired as that is what I am according to the inland revenue. Then put in the details about teaching job which I last did in 2005!

I don't see that as ridic. it's got you listed as a retired teacher who last worked in 2005, pretty accurate

what would be ridic is if you'd done 1/2 day's work in a sweet shop in between. then it'd have you listed as a sweet seller who retired in 2007

My form said Gypsy OR Irish Traveller. You have a dud form imo.

Just done this, only took 3 visits from the cencus rep to remind me.

I think they actually only fined about 30 or so people last time round. I haven't done mine yet, I'm just debating whether I can be arsed or not............

The point I was making was there was one box for two completely different ethnic groups. Different history, culture, origins etc. Plus, they asked us first and we advised them that they needed to provide separate boxes.

If you're going to collect data, collect accurate data.

IIRC there also wasn't any separate ethnic group box to tick to separate between East Anglian, Cornish or Hastings' Fishermen ethnicities - ethnic data is never collected accurately.

I know what you mean, I had to tick the box that included English.

I didn't say they did have a separate, legally recognised ethnic status - I only implied they had a separate ethnic status.

That's the reason why ethnicity data is never collected accurately, it relies on an imiposed definition rather than a natural one. The resulting analysis is therefore skewed depending on how those defintions are written - for example, most ethnic monitoring data doesn't have either Gypsy or Irish Traveller on it, so the resulting analysis on it is skewed against that demographic.

Rumours circulating that LulzSec have lifted all the data and will be publishing it soon.

well that makes them a lot more efficient than the govt then.

They say they have them - though surely this would only apply to those who filled it in online - the paper forms won't have been inputted yet, surely?

Well no one knows if that was posted by LulzSec, so they might not be saying they have them.

The paper forms will all be scanned surely? No idea how long that would take mind, but it could have happened.

Nothing from LulzSec's twitter account yet, which seems to be where they usually announce these things from.

It seems they didn't hack the census (expect someone to suggest they do soon). Still think there is a debate to be had on the government storing all that data (closely followed by google, but at least that's sort of voluntary).
