Title: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Chompy on May 10, 2011, 04:58:15 PM Sooooo, France have it sewn up then obv. Rest are truly abysmal. Not backing 6/4 shots though.
Been trying to back Bosnia & Hurtsthegovernor in the 'without France' market but was limited to £20, so didn't bother. They were 12/1. Now 9/1. Can't get on anyway. Will look for some 10/1 elsewhere later in the week. As regards tonight, Hungary (1/5), Georgia (2/5) and Armenia (1/3) all to qualify from semi final 1 comes to a treble of around 5/4. Can't see this not happening imo. Anyone else on owt? Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: kinboshi on May 10, 2011, 05:00:09 PM Ask Uri Geller.

Azerbaijan a big player though. Sweaty Terry just texted: "That bleedin' bird what run off with a bleedin' towel last weekend? She's only up for Azer on the bleedin' Eurovisions!" Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Nico29 on May 11, 2011, 01:36:21 PM I saw georgia were 150s with chanders this morning-mbn having an ac- but on betfair some1 was asking for bundles at under 100s so i had a small tickle ew@100s with pp as they pay first 4, gotta chance chomps?
Whats yr main bet then? Bosina or azers? Saw you say you had a major bet lined up then you edited yr post! Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Chompy on May 11, 2011, 03:09:26 PM Yup, the major bet was to back Denmark in the top Scandie market, as Norway and Sweden both had no chance imo. Unf Norway then failed to qualify and Finland's performance made me re-assess.
No bet :( Most markets will be going up Friday, so that'll be the busy day. France will win. Azerbaijan, Finland, Denmark and Bosnia to chase frogs home. Best outsider Romania. No major bets placed yet though. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Jamier-Host on May 11, 2011, 09:58:59 PM Was involved on this a while back and have:
Hungary £20 win @ 20/1 Hungary £20 e/w @ 18/1 (better terms) Hungary Top 10 £80 @ 5/4 Azerbaijan £20 e/w @ 14/1 The big risk was whether the (bit rough) Hungarian bird could crack out the voice live. Actually missed the show last night but caught the highlights prior to voting and seemed ok. Still thing it's a good song and should be well in the mix. The French song stood out for me when I first heard them but just seemed a bit risky to back that as a short favourite. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Jamier-Host on May 11, 2011, 10:19:53 PM Can't quite work out why Jedward have plummeted to 5/1 2nd fave in the betting but you can still get evens on a Top 10 finish.
Would rather lay them to qualify from the Semi than back either of those though :) Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Nico29 on May 12, 2011, 09:22:49 AM Added austria@50s ew with pads first 4 ew.
Tbh im just following the money moves on betfair and the apparent place value with those that go first 4. Will wait for the eurovision oracle chompy to tip up something on friday and then i'll wade in with the big stakes. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Jamier-Host on May 12, 2011, 04:32:03 PM Think I might add Estonia @ 16/1 as looks like a freeroll. Good song and should walk it tonight in the Semis so if it gets a good draw it goes to single figures.
Hungary has only weakened due to the poor draw. Not up to speed on the draw stats for past results but think it is less of an issue now that the Semi Finals are a bigger deal so the songs are a bit better known before the final. Not super confident on the win but fairly hopeful of it nabbing a Top 4 for a place. And Azerbaijan should be a shoe in for a place if you look at results the last few years. Been there or thereabouts every time despite shocking songs. This time it's half decent and they won't be far off. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Chompy on May 12, 2011, 05:33:37 PM Draw is still mega important. Azerbaijan came out of the 1 box last year and it definitely cost them. They finished fifth. A later draw and they'd have been top three imo.
Would put you off Estonia. Guatanteed to qualify but I don't think it'll go single figures even with a late draw. Finland is drawn 1 this year and I'm getting more interested in Denmark to be top scandie country. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Chompy what is your best bet for this year now all the finalists are announced? Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: thediceman on May 13, 2011, 11:02:20 AM Top five in no particular order for me are Estonia, Hungary, Abzerbaijan, France (hot favourite but I don't think will win) and shock horror the UK. I'm not a fan of the man band Blue but the favouable draw positions are filled with many weak performers and Blue appartently have a sizeable support across Europe.
Eso, I've got a thread on my forum (about food festivals and all things foodie related), which I've yet to launch where I've put the final running order, details of the semi's running order and who went through and videos of some of the favourites. I've also looked at what draw previous winners had. http://www.greatbritishfoodies.com/showthread.php?77-Eurovision-2011 Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Jamier-Host on May 13, 2011, 01:34:43 PM I'd say Azerbaijan @ 10/1 with Hills is the best bet you could place now. Great draw, great recent record as picks up votes from all over the place, and best song they've had since joining (from what I recall).
I think Jedward and Blue can be written off, and would definitely be a layer of at least Jedward for Top 10. France is way too short but is a massive standout song because it is very different to the rest and the guy can sing. Who knows whether people will want to vote an opera song to victory though? Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Jamier-Host on May 13, 2011, 01:38:34 PM Actually just spotted Hungary have drifted to 11/8 for Top 10 with Bet365 (still odds on elsewhere) so have topped up a bit more on that.
Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: AndrewT on May 13, 2011, 01:43:24 PM Was surprised at just how big a reception Jedward got in the venue last night - think they got the biggest cheer when they went through.
I like Denmark to do well - catchy song + uninspired other Scandie entries. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Nico29 on May 13, 2011, 04:13:29 PM Backed azers this morning at 12-1 ew with pp (first 4) after seeing the draw and that it was an arb with betfair.

Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Nico29 on May 13, 2011, 07:31:35 PM Been listening to the songs today.
Here's what i thought in draw order: 1. Finland-Omg so dull. 2. Bosnia & Herzegovina-Bit of fun but can't see this doing anything, surprised chompy flagged this up and draw has finished any chances. 3. Denmark-Just ok for me, nothing spectacular and i think will be lost amongst the numbers, especially so early. 4. Lithuania-?Nice voice but sounds like she's singing almost for no reason, don't get the song. 5. Hungary-Nice voice and ok song, agree with jamie about singer being bit rough! Feeling might get forgotten, shame as liked the vocal. 6. Ireland-Typical Jedward it's catchy, fun and outa tune. Will have a chance for sure, but don't see any value here at 5-1. 7. Sweden-Teeny boppy song, prob find most who could vote will have been told to go to bed, oh and annoying. 8. Estonia-Fit singer, shame about the song, can't see what the fuss is about this one. 9. Greece-Surely wld deserve null points. 10. Russia-Listened to about 5 secs and cldnt bare no more, maybe that's the sign of a winner-but not 4 me! 11. France-I can't believe this was like 6-1 a few weeks back, really like the song, think girls will love the guy too. Even think 13-8 could be value and tempted to back huge. 12. Italy-pianovision anyone?didn't get this one bit. 13. Switzerland-liked her voice, thought song was strange and don't see this troubling anyone up top. 14. United Kingdom-Liked the song actually as i thought some of the vocals were decent. Not a fan of the band in gen though, but at least we should be top 10 easily. 15. Moldova-What hats, unicycle and all round madfest that makes jedward look conserv!Def the quirkiest all round act, 4 laff ive stuck pennies on@300s+same top 4@70s, also bkd top 10 @9-2.Only prob- i think they are taking it seriously. 16. Germany-Thought this clda been the value b4 hearing the song. I'm out. 17. Romania-Nearly fell asleep to this one. 18. Austria-Jessie J type, likeish this and backed earlier in the week ew at 50s first 4. 19. Azerbaijan-Watched the video of this and was impressed, got involved at 12s ew and 5's ew without france. Love their draw, but now ive just heard their semi peformance-thinking of laying much of the win off. 20. Slovenia-If this was anywhere but near the end i'd say no chance, draw gives it faint hope and i've a feeling this cld become a steamer-from looking at betting- i dunno why cos i wont be getting involved-too samey. 21. Iceland-Could not put one pence on this. 22. Spain-Oh dear. 23. Ukraine-Cute song/singer but little bland for me and altho seemed a large price due to draw im gonna leave it. 24. Serbia-Like the sound of her voice but really hate the set and whole set up of the song etc. 25. Georgia-Backed earlier ew@100s in week due to arb nature and also rumours of being half decent, kinda think have value but changing their lead singer a month or so bk dsnt inspire hugely. Song is ok-draw is great!! Am deciding how much to have on france but this could be large. Azers is a great value place bet but like i say may lay off some of the win part. Austria and georgia are small value ew bets with nice draws and moldova is a pure fun one, although i see no reason why fun alone can't make them top tenners and 9-2 seems largeish. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Jamier-Host on May 13, 2011, 08:30:50 PM Made the same effort one evening a month or so ago and had France top of my list for quality as it just stood out so much. Was already clear favourite though and just didn't fancy getting involved at even 5/1. Surely I'm right in saying that opera is not generally that popular?
True, it could absolutely hose up - but then again I just think I'd avoid piling into a Eurovision fave, especially as France isn't the most popular country in Europe. Don't forget that a huge part of this competition still hinges on rigged/political voting.... Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Don't forget that a huge part of this competition still hinges on rigged/political voting.... Nothing stands out for me mate, bar that song. Draw is fine, especially with so much dead wood following it. Agree france aren't hugely popular and i'll be keeping some of the azer bet as back up, which largely down to the draw i see as pretty much the only danger. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: boldie on May 14, 2011, 09:44:34 AM Still think Russia will get some votes but will probs watch some clips today and back something from the last 6 to perform.
RP actually have a decent betting article on the Eurovision tonight and that again highlights the importance of the draw; Last 7 winners were drawn 22-20-24-17-17-19-20. Now even if you take in to account that some of them were already favourites before the draw (Russia a few years ago springs to mind but there must have been others) it's still too big a deal to ignore. Having listened to this (as advised by RP as well TBF) YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmagM89J1-8 I'll be stunned if she is 100-1 in running after the performance tonight. (100-1 with VC 1/4 odds EW first 4 places) Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: boldie on May 14, 2011, 09:48:55 AM Boylesports only go three places but also don't mind the Georgian entry @100-1 obv as can be laid off in running
Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Graham C on May 14, 2011, 10:36:58 AM If Georgia are currently 100/1 but going last, as prices fluctuate during the contest, isn't there a likely chance that it may go out quite a bit further during the contest prior to them peforming, making the time to back them maybe half way through the entries, assuming you are backing to lay off of course.
Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Jamier-Host on May 14, 2011, 10:39:11 AM My wife read an article about the Iceland entry (good draw) who are the mates of the guy that wrote the song (Sigurjon "Sjonni" Brink (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigurj%C3%B3n_Brink)). He dropped dead from a stroke a few days before performing in the national competition, leaving behind a wife and 4 kids, so his friends stepped in to live his dream for him and take the song to Eurovision in his memory.
Typical gushing X Factor stuff, so may well bag a bunch of sympathy votes if they make a meal of it in the coverage.... Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Chompy on May 14, 2011, 11:29:32 AM Just had my first proper bet...
Top Balkan country. Keen to oppose Bosnia because of the draw and they're 4/5 for this market. The other five countries are 100/1 or bigger outright and BaldFred have got this one wrong. Bosnia and Herzegovina 4/5 Slovenia 4 Serbia 9/2 Greece 10 Romania 10 Moldova 10 Slovenia and Serbia are both meh. Greece and Moldova are terrible. Which leaves Romaniaaaaaaaaaaaa! I backed this outright for a few quid ante-post at 200+. Romania have a decent recent record without winning and finished third last year. Twelve months ago they got 12pts from neighbours Moldova, same as every year. Moldova are in again, so that's 12pts in the bag. They also got points from the Scandie countries with their upbeat poppy chorus. This year's will also appeal to the Swedes etc. And they got points from Spain, where there's a big Romanian population. Should again score there. Don't think we'll need a big score to win this market. I actually got 12/1. Anything about 6/1 is value imo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTljj7YGdZk Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: thediceman on May 14, 2011, 11:53:06 AM Last 7 winners were drawn 22-20-24-17-17-19-20. Ukraine 2004 won having entered at no.10. Just looked at the odds again and all the acts that have favourable draws, except Aberbaijan are truley awful and don't stand a chance even with a favourable draw. Best bet for me is Estonia e/w @ 20's. Jedward have shortend to 5/1 WTF and UK have drifted and are now 15/1. France are 100/40 suggesting the winner has already been crowned. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Typical gushing X Factor stuff, so may well bag a bunch of sympathy votes if they make a meal of it in the coverage.... Heard about this. Song is still atrocious though imo. Also doubt message will get through hugely to public as almost seemed downplayed in semi final. Ive now had some on moldova to be top balkan at 10s, will have a little on chomps romanian's too in that market altho might have to make do with 8's, laying bosnia dependant on liquidity in that market too. The moldovians have come in on betfair so im glad it wasnt just me that found it a chuckle! Slovenia like i said above have proved to be a steamer-still dont see that. Ive bitten the bullet and had a wedge on the frogs@7-4, cant see this getting much bigger and am happy enough, might even chuck some more on later. I'll leave my azers ew@12s and ew@5's without france, song dsnt come across great live, but is still the one big song near the end imo. Im happy with my austria ew@50's and georgia ew@100s bets, surprised both are similar prices on betfair, cld even be value. Bar all this unless something magical springs up-that will be it! Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: AndrewT on May 14, 2011, 11:13:40 PM Expect to see a lot of tired faces at Eurovision next year.
It has to start at 8pm UK time. Azerbaijan is 4 hours ahead of us. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: gatso on May 14, 2011, 11:15:08 PM Come on, votes for Denmark please. Less for B&H, thought they were terrible myself bainn and harmony were on? they won in 2007 (http://www.smh.com.au/ffximage/2006/05/21/eurovision06_wideweb__470x312,0.jpg) genius I really liked bos herz. the old fella was cool and the little trumpet dude too. equal top scorer for me in the song category Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: boldie on May 14, 2011, 11:21:33 PM I'd say Azerbaijan @ 10/1 with Hills is the best bet you could place now. VWP! Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Claw75 on May 14, 2011, 11:35:13 PM Hi did back azer though, or did I read that wrong yeah but it's no fun quoting that stuff :) France will win. Azerbaijan, Finland, Denmark and Bosnia to chase frogs home. Best outsider Romania. No major bets placed yet though. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: boldie on May 14, 2011, 11:35:50 PM Just looked at Azerbaijan on Google Maps - it's further East than Iraq. So proper Europe then. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: AndrewT on May 14, 2011, 11:39:12 PM Azer only finished 2nd in their semi-final - Greece won. Sweden won the other one with Denmark 2nd.
Ireland only finished 8th in their semi, so 8th overall was a good result. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Chompy on May 14, 2011, 11:44:58 PM Crazy scenes all night really. WTF happened with Italy finishing second? And Sweden and Ukraine sure deserved to finish top four. Bosnia being top Balkan was painful. Sweden beating Denmark in top Scandie was also painful. Happy to get out relatively unscathed at the end of it all.
Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Graham C on May 14, 2011, 11:45:53 PM Been good fun and made a few quid :) Will be more on the ball next year if I think on! Cheers for the tips posted.

Sure did. Sure is. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Post by: Nico29 on May 15, 2011, 12:59:05 AM Been listening to the songs today. Here's what i thought in draw order: 1. Finland-Omg so dull.-Nothing changed. 2. Bosnia & Herzegovina-Bit of fun but can't see this doing anything, surprised chompy flagged this up and draw has finished any chances.-Similar thoughts on night although was entertaining. 3. Denmark-Just ok for me, nothing spectacular and i think will be lost amongst the numbers, especially so early.-felt they were outa tune and ott, yet they did well in the voting. 4. Lithuania-?Nice voice but sounds like she's singing almost for no reason, don't get the song.-yep 5. Hungary-Nice voice and ok song, agree with jamie about singer being bit rough! Feeling might get forgotten, shame as liked the vocal.-yep 6. Ireland-Typical Jedward it's catchy, fun and outa tune. Will have a chance for sure, but don't see any value here at 5-1.-yep 7. Sweden-Teeny boppy song, prob find most who could vote will have been told to go to bed, oh and annoying.-shocked they got so close and thought they were v average. 8. Estonia-Fit singer, shame about the song, can't see what the fuss is about this one.-yep. 9. Greece-Surely wld deserve null points.-i am absolutely shell shocked this did so well, hated it. 10. Russia-Listened to about 5 secs and cldnt bare no more, maybe that's the sign of a winner-but not 4 me!-yep 11. France-I can't believe this was like 6-1 a few weeks back, really like the song, think girls will love the guy too. Even think 13-8 could be value and tempted to back huge.- even tho it seemed weak on the night by its own standards-and kinda felt flat, still such a classy song 4 me-but obv not eurovision-i'll learn, wd jamie. 12. Italy-pianovision anyone?didn't get this one bit.-just like greece shellshocked by this one's peformance, guess it did go down well in the stadium. 13. Switzerland-liked her voice, thought song was strange and don't see this troubling anyone up top.-yep. 14. United Kingdom-Liked the song actually as i thought some of the vocals were decent. Not a fan of the band in gen though, but at least we should be top 10 easily. -so many bum notes and think we were lucky to almost make the top 10-so i was wrong about this 1. 15. Moldova-What hats, unicycle and all round madfest that makes jedward look conserv!Def the quirkiest all round act, 4 laff ive stuck pennies on@300s+same top 4@70s, also bkd top 10 @9-2.Only prob- i think they are taking it seriously.- gave so much hope by crashing in market and def happy i had a sweat on this, soooooooo close to copping top 10 bet too-meh. 16. Germany-Thought this clda been the value b4 hearing the song. I'm out.-yep 17. Romania-Nearly fell asleep to this one.-yep altho managed to pick up a few points here and there-i still dunno why. 18. Austria-Jessie J type, likeish this and backed earlier in the week ew at 50s first 4.-loved this on the night, obv im the only 1! 19. Azerbaijan-Watched the video of this and was impressed, got involved at 12s ew and 5's ew without france. Love their draw, but now ive just heard their semi peformance-thinking of laying much of the win off.- really thought girl sang terribly and didnt feel this peformance from the winners, yet proved me right at least from their favourable draw. 20. Slovenia-If this was anywhere but near the end i'd say no chance, draw gives it faint hope and i've a feeling this cld become a steamer-from looking at betting- i dunno why cos i wont be getting involved-too samey.- was impressed, she was hot too. 21. Iceland-Could not put one pence on this.-yep altho was a nice story. 22. Spain-Oh dear.-again another surprise in that did better on night in terms of song, but predictable in low ranking. 23. Ukraine-Cute song/singer but little bland for me and altho seemed a large price due to draw im gonna leave it.-did better in terms of both song and points on night, top 4 too, meh feeling price was 2 big was correct! 24. Serbia-Like the sound of her voice but really hate the set and whole set up of the song etc.-enjoyed it on the night and thought was treated harshly pointwise. 25. Georgia-Backed earlier ew@100s in week due to arb nature and also rumours of being half decent, kinda think have value but changing their lead singer a month or so bk dsnt inspire hugely. Song is ok-draw is great!!-yep Am deciding how much to have on france but this could be large. Azers is a great value place bet but like i say may lay off some of the win part. Austria and georgia are small value ew bets with nice draws and moldova is a pure fun one, although i see no reason why fun alone can't make them top tenners and 9-2 seems largeish. Quoting this for own reference. What a MEH that was. If i'd not traded halfway thru and just b4 the point scoring azers wlda secured me a healthy profit, despite the france loss. However due to lumping hugely on the austrian entry-which was robbed imo-and backing a few outsiders who peformed well on the night, plus convincing myself azers had gone short enough to lay-ive barely made a bullseye. Was interesting to see songs like france's so greatly peformed previously-sound so wooden on that stage-yet others like slovenia, serbia and austria excelling on the night-well certainly compared to prev showings. Thought azers peformance was distinctly average and they only won due to politics and the draw. Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest... Isn't it sad that I did so much research? :) As it happens I didn't win massive as had larger bets on Hungary who were a bit screwed by the draw but also didn't perform well. Still pleased to get the winner again though. See ya next year! |
