Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: ifm on January 03, 2006, 10:54:19 AM Try turning the 'puter on and tapping F8, a menu will pop up and select start last known good configuration (or something like that).
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 10:57:02 AM wont let me do a restore, at the point where i will start from scratch but it wont let me do that either.
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 11:08:23 AM done the F8 thing and it said re-boot hard drive i ok'd it and it is still the same
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: Royal Flush on January 03, 2006, 11:17:45 AM Have you tried throwing it out the window?
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: ifm on January 03, 2006, 11:23:03 AM The F8 thing should give you a menu with several options, one should be "start last known good configuration".
Didn't you get this? Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 11:38:23 AM Heid, that ctrl shift didnt do anything it went str8 into windows

Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: ifm on January 03, 2006, 11:46:31 AM Second one is your dvd drive, 3rd is your network card i believe.
Right then, reboot and tap esc, then press F1 when prompted. You should then go into the Bios software, look for an option to disable LAN and save changes and exit. Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 12:14:00 PM after page came up it went straight into windows again. Accidentally got into last known configuration and this did nothing it is still the same? is it time to take down to puter hospital?
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 12:15:24 PM it says on page that quickly flashes up at start F2 is BIOS but this does not do anything either. I crying now BOOOO HOOOOOO
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 12:17:10 PM Heid I started it in safe mode as well but it wouldnt let me system restore then either GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 12:19:13 PM Pretty crazy though the only 2 things i can access are Blonde and Victor Chandler!!! How Bizzare?? Is this fate or does the computer just know what my life consists of??
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: ifm on January 03, 2006, 12:19:52 PM reboot holding F2 then, i am fairly sure it's having trouble booting from your LAN card.
If you get into the bios disable the LAN and reboot, if it has an effect you may need to reenable it to get back on the net though. It wouldn't let you restore in safe mode? Why not, what came up in sys restore? Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 12:22:00 PM in safe mode it said that i needed to restart computer and try again, the same message that i had been getting in other mode
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: ifm on January 03, 2006, 12:23:07 PM in safe mode the first thing it does is prompt you to use system restore, did that not happen?
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: Bongo on January 03, 2006, 12:42:51 PM Doesn't sound like hardware to me so i'd ignore the BIOS for now.
Does the computer go into safemode without any errors? Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 12:44:24 PM Doesn't sound like hardware to me so i'd ignore the BIOS for now. only when i get annoyed and switch the comp on and off at switchDoes the computer go into safemode without any errors? Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 12:46:06 PM F2 does nothing
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 01:10:31 PM The message it says when i try and restore is
The system restore cannot protect your computer. Please restart your computer and try again. Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: ifm on January 03, 2006, 01:16:58 PM This is a fairly common problem with restore.
how to fix this problem so you can get them in the future. Right click My Computer, choose "Properties" then click on "System Restore" tab. Put a check in the box for "Disable Restore on all drives". Click OK, then Reboot your PC. After you reboot, go back to the System Restore tab and uncheck the box. Click OK. Next, go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools then click "System Restore". Choose "Create a Restore Point" and give it a name like "Reset" as a reminder. Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: ifm on January 03, 2006, 01:21:49 PM If you get an error message regarding one of your drives (dvd) then i would be fairly certain a virus is on your system.
I posted a link in the virus thread for microsofts web based scanner, use that. I have to go to work now but if you're quick i may be able to point you in the right direction Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: Bongo on January 03, 2006, 01:23:45 PM Are they the exact words? It sounds a bit unlike MS like...
Have you done anything to your computer recently? Installed any new software/hardware? Changed anything? Have you had any odd behaviour apart from this? Do you use Sonic Selector to download music? Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 03, 2006, 01:29:38 PM just trying ifm's suggestion at mo, but no i havent used sonic music manager at all since i got computer exactly 1 year ago. Not had any funny behaviour from the comp before.

Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: Trace on January 03, 2006, 02:36:46 PM Can you run virus software in safe mode? Or adaware or spyware software?
I think McAfee have an online virus checker too - or they used to have. Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: Royal Flush on January 03, 2006, 02:38:27 PM Can you run virus software in safe mode? Or adaware or spyware software? I think McAfee have an online virus checker too - or they used to have. http://www.majorgeeks.com/HijackThis_d3155.html (http://www.majorgeeks.com/HijackThis_d3155.html) Once you have the log that it produces you can post it on their forum, someone will tell you how to fix the problem, IF, of course, it is a virus/hijacker. Sounds a pain whatever it is, Best of luck fixing it. I do not get any messages when i start now, however i have no volume, half my programs still don't work. If I minimise anything it disappears completely, takes 10 minutes to start up, cannot copy and paste anyything, no links work and i just wasted £39.99 on downloading mcafee 2006 as it has completely been swallowed up somewhere on this @!&$ computer, still cant restore HAPPY SODDING NEW YEAR!!! GGGGGRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: ifm on January 03, 2006, 11:59:47 PM Did you do as i said?
If you get the error message for the drive (which you did) it is almost certainly a virus, get hijackthis and post the results on the forum and they will sort it for you. Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: dik9 on January 04, 2006, 08:26:39 AM Cheers IFM did it, but could not find the forum to post it on. Erased a couple of suspect programs myself, and then got carried away and deleted much more than i was suppossed to. lol. Using my spare computer now as i am gonna take the sick one to the doctors. Thanks to everyone for help. Just wished I could have saved some info before it goes but alas poo happens :D
Title: Re: PC HELP PLEASE Post by: Bongo on January 04, 2006, 11:40:06 AM The info will probably still be on the drive, i'm sure the computer doctors can sort it out for you if you ask...
