Title: What I found in this?
Post by: Acidmouse on November 25, 2011, 01:50:33 PM
Two weeks ago (ish) I found this in Settle railway station waiting room. Inside the video were 4 small items. Anyone want to guess? I am excluding the video itself :)

Can't believe how excited I am for the reveal, such a geek.

Have you put the video in to see if it is Sleeping with the enemy? Imagine the back story! who has VHS in 2011? could have been there for years.

I am not 100% sure, it might become a little more obvious once you all know the items in there and what happened next.

I have no idea how long the video had been there, but it was hidden down the back of a 1930's large radiator. I had 15mins to burn so I was just looking around the waiting room.

I took out the Video and found:

£30 (1 ten 1 twenty note)

A condom

A note with co-ords on.

I knew the numbers were coords as I Geo-cache and we use them to navigate around with. Using my Iphone I soon sussed the GPS location was about 20mins walk north into and a little past Settle town centre.

Go there or wait for train?

Waiting for train is not an option. You wouldn't believe how many times I turn the car around and go back to investigate an 'interesting' carrier bag or something on the side of the road.

One of these days...

This is just turning into one massive brag...

Please tell me it was a loan oak tree in the middle of the field, with a tin buried at the base??

Go there! Getting off train at St Andrews, old dear asks me to help her off with her 3 bags from the rack...'this one this one and this one'. Help her off with the bags on to the platform, she's greeted by some chap, maybe her son. I go back and get my bag, I'm the last off. They've left one bag on the platform, obviously going back for it (I'm too laden to help). I get to my car in the station car park and wait, but everyone has gone. I look back on the platform, there is no one there, but the bag is sitting there all on its own. I go back and picak it up, assuming she's forgotten it. Walk into the ticket office, explain to the guy, who suggests that I open it. Open it, to find
3 x passports, One has photo of youngish chap, and bunches of airline stubs for flights to Amsterdam.
5 x clear bags, each containing about 10 thousand pounds in Kuwaiti dinars
1 large dark sealed bag at the bottom, contents unknown.

What to do next?

Is the £20 note a current or old one? (they changed in the last few years)

Is the condom out of date?

Surely the location can be input into a smart phone. If it's a dodgy residential area prob just a cheap hooker.

If there is a tree in a field, take a spade with you

explain to the man that this is actually my bag, theirs is in my car, I'll brb.

Clear off.

Check exchange rate so see if 10k in Kuwaiti dinars are worth something

I am not sure if the condom was out of date :) the £20 was new and I spent it at Leeds station later.

The above link it the place it took me too (fuk the train) the exact coords were the bench near the car.

Dunno, I'd  rather have taken it to the police - don't you get to keep money thats been handed in if no one claims it?  If it's dodgy (drugs in package?) the police is the best place for it (unless you have buyers of course :D) but I'd rather they not come looking for me to reclaim the package.

Went to the bench, looked around to see if anyone was about (i was paranoid either a camera was on the bench or someone from the 1-2 houses was having a giggle). Then began searching the bench and after 5mins bingo a nan cache was hung on the underside of the bench..with a note in it.

Its true, not something unfamiliar in the geocaching world to have stuff like this, minus the £30 and condom though!

The note said (I don't have the note but its near enough):

Weekdays 9-4
Then it had an address under this...which was about 500 yards away, it looked like a secluded house next to some water.

I mean WTF....I was like shattered from walking at this point and there was no chance I would go to the house alone, no idea what would be waiting there for me..

Went to get the next train back to Leeds and its safe to say I didn't bother telling the wife about it, too many questions to answer :) Had some weird shit like this happen to me in my past, sadly no real exciting ending. Not really thought about what was on the video, but it still might be there.

The thing i find hardest to believe is that with 20 mins spare time and an Iphone you decide to look behind radiators instead of playing on angry birds or going online or something.

Make the time, get there and record it, its like a real life thriller.

All above board and legal M'lord. But some stuff that means whatever we encounter we wont end up tied, bound and gagged..:) Had some weird trips on walks in the countryside and a few have lead to us getting chased by someone with a pickaxe/large knife.; You can never be too carful lol.

Do you have a plan on how to approach it?  Are you going to knock on the door if it's an occupied house?

Geocaching is great fun.  If you have a look on the main site, you'd be amazed on how many there are, they're all over the place.  There's one right opposite my house on a road sign that's been there for a couple of years, amazing.  My little girl loves it, it's fun treasure hunting.

Yes there are caches everywhere! so no walk in the countryside or town has to be dull. My little ones too young for it right now but in a few years we will be caching again. I planted one in Leeds park square it gets about 2-3 finds a week.

What would a 'cache' usually contain?

Is it just a log sheet saying congrats or something similar?

Or does it generally give a clue to another location and the find goes on etc?

Title: Re: What I found in this?
Post by: Graham C on November 29, 2011, 11:47:39 AM
Can be any of those.  Often it's a log on who's found it.  Others have items that can be swapped, nothing expensive, keyrings are common.  Some have disposable cameras in them so you take a snap shot when you find it.   You can get some that are a series so when you find one, you move on.  The possibilities are endless.

You'd be suprised on how popular it is.  They're all over the world and in every location you can think of but unless you know what to look for, you'd never know.

Title: Re: What I found in this?
Post by: Acidmouse on November 29, 2011, 12:07:07 PM
I love the multi stage caches, i had one called "Mouse Run 1" "Mouse Run 2" "Mouse Run 3" "Mouse Run 4", you had to find the coords in the first 3 to open the locked chest in the 4th! it was pretty popular.

Fav cache is at the cow and carf near Otley/Ilkey, you have to find a cach which has a 20 foot rope with hook on, where you go to the cliffs and in the right place lower it down to pick up a small container with the end cache in.

Hardest cache, a deep cave near Derby where I had to squeeze into tiny tunnels to find a cache, really dangerous.

This Saturday we decided to go to Settle. Me the wife and the kids, I did a jedi mind trick and pushed her to thinking going to settle was a good idea and that she came up with the idea. Yes the markets lovely and the family pub is great to relax in, so off we head there first thing in the morning.

We get to the Station and I tell her I will be 5mins, to check train times etc...so off I go into the cloak/waiting room to look behind the radiator.

Video is there. Stuffed down the very bottom, its either fallen or someone has tampered with it. I pull it out and there is a note in there.

"Enjoyed the money?"

Under this is the GPS location coords again.

Now I really wanted to grab the video but with the wife watching me I had no chance, so the plan was to pick it up on the way back.

Zero chance on this trip to visit the GPS location, so we went into town and had nice time. Fast forward 2hrs and I bag the video place it under the pushchair. I have the video at home but need to set-up our video player I have not used for years to see what's on it.

Sorry nothing major I will try watch it tonight

Nah, not yet. I might do so in the future but normally with our lass its more simple to just say I found £30 :) She would be the type to just throw the video in the bin and spend the £30 without any sense of adventure or intrigue.

Isn't the excitement the address and or GPS points?  That is where the trail lead too wasn't?

The video was just the "carry case".  Think focus needs to be on the GPS directions.

Managed to watch it last night. Video players sure are slow compared to sky+ :(

Seemed like a normal film "Sleeping with the Enemy" at first and so I fast forwarded it to the end, this is where it gets fuked up.

There is what looks like a web cam/security cam footage of people (one man alone, then a group of three people), opening a large door into a building. Both times they knocked and I can't really see if someone comes or they just push open the door themselves. The footage only lasts about 2mins but you don't see them come out.

After this the "ET" runs and there is a message after it. It looks like a movie maker package on a computer with text moving across simply saying "Are you Ready?"

WTF is this bullshit. I started getting a little paranoid so opened up the video cassette to make sure no tracking device or chip in it :) you can never be too sure imo.

Yeah it sounds like bollocks, I aint fussed if people believe it or not. I think its just a game someone is playing but i got the £30 a a giggle from it. Doubt I will go back now esp since the notes lost, cords lost and video destroyed. Maybe they will realise this and replace it in the near future, sure expensive for them if they do.

Yeah much as I would like to go off there and see what's the score; there are a few stumbling blocks.

If owt happens I cant run, due to 4 knee ops in 12 months only just starting to walk properly so if shit hits the fan I am screwed.

Time, I aint got much of it. Two little ones, a house move various work stuff coming up.

If I was single I would have gone the next day for sure, but its not like this will float away and I cant visit it sometime in the future if i want. I have the final coords from the bench, everything else has been thrown away so unless the stuff has been placed back its ok.

What I will promise is if i can go with someone in the near future I will record it with flipcam :)

it's not a googlewhack, just the top result.  was just putting myself in the minds of the people who put the video and stuff there, and if it had gone missing I might do a bit of a google to see if anyone on the internetz had mentioned finding it

I actually went to this yesterday on a day off..I went with my mate tooled up..

Report to follow just super busy with kids/work atm..

I didn't die which was nice.

Footnotes for those who forgot about this story:

I found a hidden package in a station. It contained a video with instructions to go to a house on the outskirts of settle via GPS location. The house had camera's with footage of people coming to it and entering the house on the video. It was creepy. It had money in it which i spent on beer at a pub in settle.

It took me a long time to go back.

Ha!

Never heard of geocaching until this thread.

Did a little research and it turns out there is a cache here: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=04bc8218-917a-4b6e-a735-0f5b8972822b which was basically at the far end of the garden of our old house.

Explains why there would quite frequently be people looking around like they'd lost something!

I am taking on the trip:

Flipcam (to record the house entry etc..)
Iphone (with flashlight app installed, if its dark in the house)

Baton if needs must, for entering closed door or getting trapped.

£40 for fish and chips and beer money (after the event).

Ok, I got my mate Sibby to come along with me on a trip to Settle, as he is a dolite I had to pay the two £12 day returns from Leeds. The £12 was a no brainer and worth the investment as he is very big, up for anything and backup for me if owt goes wrong (at this point I am still in two minds weather it was going to be dangerous or not).

He had a concealed baton (see pic) I had my iphone and £40 quid to cover beer and grub. Also the coords for the cache and house I never went to the first visit. I put the coords into the map app and had a very good idea how to get there from Settle, I guessed about 20mins walk would be fine.

It was about 7am we setoff and it was flipping freezing, I told the full story to Sibby on the way there so he knew what to expect. I know it sounds silly but checking the back of the radiator in the station again had never crossed my mind, but Sibby asked if we should check the spot again. Erm sure, didn't expect anything but was worth a peek.

We got off train and the place was dead, dunno what Settle is like but I guess most people leave it to go to work elsewhere, the station was quiet so we went to the room and put my arm down the back. No Video, but there was something wedged right as bottom, out comes the baton and I slam it down so the item pops out the bottom.

Before you could count to 5 the item was open and it was a cd/dvd looked blank with some writing on front of it. "Sleeping Beauty 2011?" in small writing on the back of it and i mean tiny, very hard to see was a list of coords..

Now this is where it gets fuking weird. I know its not normal upto now but the coords were:

42° 26' 05"N   83° 59' 06"W

I ask you to go to google maps and zoom into what it is called.

So we have hell in a handbasket referance and a film I assume on DvD/cd. I google the movie and it looks like a bag of bollocks tbh, don't understand why its there or what it means, but before we plod off to the house I wanna see whats on it.  We go to a local hotel/pub where I know there is a TV room, pretty private off the main food/bar area.

We order two full English breakfast and put in the DvD. Anyone who has used movie maker knows the annoying titles that go across the screen well this had some that was something like "Glad you came back, enjoy the movie", we watched like 30mins of the movie which was about some women selling herself to old geezers in a large house. Sibby is pissing himself and starts to think this is a setup by me. I told him if I was going to set him up with a prank it would'nt be over an hour away from Leeds and costing me money.

We plan to finish up and go for the walk to the house...i put the cd in my coat and we setoff..

No slowroll here got cold in bed so gonna nap and put restup later, warning its not a great ending..

Feel like shit with man flu, so it wont be long and interesting just the facts.

Left pub and walked up to the North of settle, it goes into countryside really quickly and from cobbled streets to small windy roads. Nice views over the town and railway. Lots of walkers already out and me and my mate stand out like two melons, I have a bright orange Giants baseball t-shirt and jeans, not great walking clobber.

GPS tells me to head down a path near a waterworks house/site and we see a pretty large mansion just beyond it, tucked into the tree's hardly visible until you get within 50 yards of the front entrance. There is a large saying private road don't enter, obv we just walk straight past it.

As we get to the house the GPS says we here. Ok house looks old and maybe a 10 bedroom jobby, no sign of life or cars. I tell Sibby to lets look around the outside first before we try to enter. We climb over a fence and go into the back/garden. Its pretty mental garden almost like a secret garden overgrown, paths leading into tree's, a few doors in huge walls (locked) and what remains of a play structure, swings etc. Nowt special.

Looked through the windows into the house and it was really dark, mainly due to the woods around the house, the sun was minimum. Back door locked. There was however stairs leading down to a cellar of some sort. Sibby went down and looked in, a few boxes, door locked.

Time to go to front of house and see if we can get in. As I knew there had been a camera looking at the front entrance we looked up and hey presto we could make out a tiny camera just under the guttering, no lights on or sign it was working.

Odd thou there looked like a new bell on the front entrance where as the rest of the house looked well knackered. Baton on standby I rung the bell. We could hear a faint chime from the house...no shit its the theme of one of my favorite films

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGORPUzLxtU

Sibby confirmed to me it sounded like that too, see we agreed :) No response, another ring and we waiting. Interesting the camera on the door now had a faint red light showing, was it filming us? Previous footage I had seen on the tape showed people ringing the door and entering, wtf was happening and why didn't the door either open or someone in?

Getting a little hacked off now, Sibby never one to hold back had a cunning plan. I was up for going back to Settle and having a few jars of beer, Sibby was having none of it.

We went to the back cellar stairs and door and kicked it in. Took a few goes but it smashed al'reet. Again glad I brought my mate :) Cellar was kinda weird, empty fireplace, looked like almost a self contained flat, servants quarters perhaps? Old Dumb waiter looks like never been used for 40+ years. No furniture to speak off, that is until (this spooked me) a hand basket empty. (see GPS reference to devils hand basket in prev post). The basket was also new and I mean new, clean. I just don't get what it meant or why it was empty.

Go or try get in main house upstairs? I was pretty confident that the house was empty, so we went up the stairs to the main floor. The problem was the door at the top of the cellar was locked and about as strong as you can get, no give and little room in a tight spot to kick it.  So Sibby has a cunning plan to see if the dumb waiter works...

There was a pulley system to lower and raise the waiter, so we yanked it down to see if it worked, yep fine after 20 or so pulls the thing is on our level, but its beyond tiny, our plan to get in it and one of us pull it up was a non starter. It was full of spider webs anyway no chance it would have been me.

I am now really angry and wanna smash something, I dunno what I expected to find but an empty house with no clues or good stuff was not one of them. Sibby wanted to smash a window and go in..and that's what we did.

Back of house into what looked like a large dining area, boom in. Again nothing special in the house apart from cobwebs and a smell of dampness. I went along up to explore the room where I thought the camera was installed looking down on to the front entrance (please remember the house must have had 30+ rooms easily over 3 levels and numerous ways to get around. Two mins later i am looking at the camera and see its hooked up to a battery and some sensor, no leads elsewhere. How is it recording? erm dunno about that.

Only other thing of mild interest in the whole place was a few videos similar to the one I found at Settle station. Exactly the same title and packaging. My mate pulled down the camera and smashed it with the baton. I think he was under some illusion something exciting was here, but I guess not. Unless I am missing something/ clue or step to the next stage? I have a few photos I took on my iphone I will go over again and check to see if I really did overlook something. I have the cd with sleeping beauty 2011 on, as of now I have not gone through it all so I guess there might be something on it at the end.

It was now an hour in and around this house and we had not heard anything from the area, no cars, wildlife or anything to spook us out.

We went back into Settle and got very drunk on some local brew's. Sorry all no fairytale ending unless I find something to take me back again.

Decided not to post pics or owt just in case someone does us for breaking windows/doors, i will just say I made it all up anyway :)

Calling bullshit on the "very drunk" - £40 minus two breakfasts doesn't leave enough money for getting very drunk.

other vid had in the same spot under the cover coords to:

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Hebden&hl=en&ll=54.097738,-1.965717&spn=0.000517,0.000976&sll=54.069803,-1.996927&sspn=0.008285,0.015621&t=h&hnear=Hebden,+North+Yorkshire,+United+Kingdom&z=20 (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Hebden&hl=en&ll=54.097738,-1.965717&spn=0.000517,0.000976&sll=54.069803,-1.996927&sspn=0.008285,0.015621&t=h&hnear=Hebden,+North+Yorkshire,+United+Kingdom&z=20)

This must be 40+ miles from settle easily and I have been to once about 5 years ago caching. There is a series of caches up the path along the old mines and its really really exposed and cold, right up on the Moors.

Its a old mine near Grassington, with loads of old tunnels and really spooky, went with wife and there are mine shafts and tunnels that look dangerous and inviting to look around. The exact spot of those coords if I can remember is a huge tower, used for some mining process or shelter in the 1800's. About 2miles from Hebden.

[ ] Chance I am going there. It's a right load of bollocks and I believe some form of treasure hunt game that was done last year by others and left abandoned now.
