Title: When did your eyesight start to go? Post by: Woodsey on November 29, 2011, 01:20:17 AM Always had spot on eyesight. Just started to notice in the last 6 months or so it's getting tougher to read the small print, my job requires a fair bit of reading of small print unfortunately, so reading glasses might be on the horizon.
Is 41 a standard age to see this? What about everyone else? Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? Post by: RED-DOG on November 29, 2011, 01:30:16 AM At about 43. Mrs Red made it to about 45, but yes, virtually everyone will have difficulty with close up vision by the age of 50.
A bit of advice, if it's just reading glasses you need, buy em off the shelf in a big supermarket rather than go to an optician, you will save up to like, 90% of the price. More advice, don't buy higher magnification than you actually need or you will end up holding everything right up to your face to see it. More advice, buy one pair that are comfortable that you really like, and a second pair that are really uncomfortable that you hate. You will never lose or damage the second pair. My emergency readers are a woman's pair with little rhinestones and butterflies on the arms. I've had the bloody things for years. Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? Post by: Woodsey on November 29, 2011, 01:36:55 AM So how do you buy them in a supermarket? Do you literally just try them on and see what you can see through properly?
Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? Post by: RED-DOG on November 29, 2011, 01:42:29 AM So how do you buy them in a supermarket? Do you literally just try them on and see what you can see through properly? Yes. They have varying degrees of magnification marked by a sticker on the lens and sometimes on the inside of the arm, and there are charts for you to look at. (I like to take something with smallish print in with me because then I can look at it in a more natural way than I can with something that is stuck on a wall. You will probably need something like +1 or +1.5 if your eyes are just beginning to go tits up. Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? Post by: RED-DOG on November 29, 2011, 01:50:27 AM These are about a tenner in the shops (If you can find them) but they are definitely the best of the folding type readers. The case is about the same size as a match box and the mechanism is far superior to any of the others.

Most of 'vision' happens in your brain, and constantly wearing glasses changes how your brain handles visual information, and promotes/demotes contrasts at different spatial frequencies. I have astigmatism and was first prescribed glasses for reading/watching tv/driving etc in my early-mid 20s. On holiday about 5 years ago I just stopped wearing them coz i was doing a bit of a reading, didn't get on with my prescription sunnies and didn't want to wear my normal specs. After a couple of days my eyes adjusted pretty well and I never bothered putting them back on again. Over the last year or so I'd noticed the sight in my right eye, in particular, seemed to be getting a bit worse, so got myself some specs again. Been wearing them a couple of months and when I take them off my unaided sight has definitely deteriorated from before I went speccy again. Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? I have no problems at all with using the computer, watching TV, cinema, sports, books etc. But there are things in small print on jars etc that to me seem to have been printed microscopically small that i have no way of reading without a magnifying glass.
Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? Post by: RED-DOG on November 29, 2011, 04:42:42 PM Remember that opticians are not unbiased. It's in their interest to tell you that you need glasses. When you go the following year it's in their interest to tell you that your prescription has changed a little, therefore, you need different glasses...
Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? Post by: Kev B on November 29, 2011, 04:51:09 PM I was 48.
Get an eye test and they will give you the prescription. If both eyes are the same then get down to tesco or some other outlet who stock them off the shelf for about £10. However if one eye is worse than the other you may have to swallow the pill and buy them from the optician. Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? But they seem to be very skilled at steering you towards the Armanis. Just demand your prescription, ask for the Pupillary distance, if they refuse just get a friend to measure it, then buy your specs online. Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? Post by: Longines on April 22, 2014, 07:45:00 AM Ever wondered why it is called 20/20 vision? Because if you stand 20 feet from the chart and can read the same line as the 'standard' person can also read from 20 feet then you have normal vision. Some people have 20/18 (or better) vision i.e. they can read from 20 feet what a normal person has to stand 18 feet away to read.
In the UK it's metric so normal vision is 6/6 (metres). I'm 2/60 - I have to stand 6 feet from the chart to just make out the letter at the top.... Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? Post by: lucky_scrote on April 22, 2014, 09:03:14 AM I went to the opticians because I was getting a strange cloudy patch on the outside of my iris, turned out to be nothing (caused by dry eyes, staring at a computer screen too much).
Did an eye test at the same time and I've always had perfect vision (eyesight pretty good in my family) but turned out one eye was starting to get a little weaker. I had no idea until I did the test. Luckily the optician said the difference was very minute and that I had nothing to worry about for a while. Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? Turns out I am only slightly iffy and I twice pased the legal vision test for driving with flying colours. All this now means is that I realise why so many people cant drive, they probably cant see. I know for sure that I felt unsafe driving compared to normal and yet I wasn't even close to the limit so that just means theres loads of people utterly blind driving about loling. :s Title: Re: When did your eyesight start to go? I live in a communal block of flats with a communal internet, has anyone got any history with anything like this and can offer me any help?
