Title: SOPA Post by: kinboshi on January 17, 2012, 12:09:47 PM Decided to post this in a new thread rather than divert Tom's thread from its current course.
If you haven't heard about SOPA it's basically the US's attempt at trying to control piracy on the web, but with a ridiculous law that would see the way the internet operates change dramatically. Info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act more here: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-01/17/sopa-101 Tomorrow Wikipedia (and some other big sites) are effectively 'on strike' to make more people aware of what SOPA will mean for the internet if it's passed. The Wikipedia blackout apparently underway in the UK, but I can still access it via my mobile. What do you make of this, Dan? Although I love to pirate things, surely something like this has to be put in place? There will obviously be some sites caught up in the middle of this but they will just have to adapt. To answer Raymondo, yes, internet poker will be gone within 12 months if this bill is passed. Title: Re: SOPA Post by: tikay on January 18, 2012, 09:35:39 AM I've missed Wiki already. Tom, try this, which seems to be a sort of scientiftic arm of Wiki..... http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Main_Page I looked up this on it just now, as a sort of "test"...... http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/LHC Maybe someone can elaborate on what it is. This was accessible, too.... http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Godwin's_Law Title: Re: SOPA Post by: rex008 on January 18, 2012, 09:54:47 AM A "wiki" is a user editable site. Wikipedia is one such. There was an interesting article on the reg about SOPA. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01/17/beyond_sopa/ I have to say I'm pretty much in agreement with most of this. I'm not a fan of creation theft. SOPA seems ridiculously heavy handed, but if things carry on the way they are, we'll end up having nothing original being created because there's no money in it. Title: Re: SOPA Post by: Dino on January 18, 2012, 10:14:43 AM If you want to use wikepedia disable javascript, they are using javascript to redirect users.
If you have a phone/pad that does not use java it will still find wikipedia as normal. Title: Re: SOPA Post by: Acidmouse on January 18, 2012, 10:15:43 AM Wish all the other big sites would follow suit.

I now find that I can access it normally via my i-Pad, though I guess it is somewhat against the spirit of the protest so to do. To answer Raymondo, yes, internet poker will be gone within 12 months if this bill is passed. The main issue is that effectively an American judge can shut down eg blondepoker because someone posts details of a sports livestream. The law is like shutting down an entire football club because one spectator shouts out abuse. As is the case of a Sheffield lad this week. Title: Re: SOPA Post by: kinboshi on January 18, 2012, 11:21:04 AM A "wiki" is a user editable site. Wikipedia is one such. Wikipedia ≠ wiki. Title: Re: SOPA Post by: mulhuzz on January 25, 2012, 10:44:34 AM SOPA and PIPA look like they are dead in their current forms (good for the internets, ldo), but there's also danger in European form, in the guise of the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement which is being pushed through the European Parliament at the moment. Since its conception in 2008, this scurrilous piece of legislation has arguably been a greater threat to the open internet than SOPA and PIPA, as it is world wide - the USA and various others are already signatories, and it's currently being discussed in the EU Parliament whether the EU should also become a signatory to the agreement.
There is a great amount of good in ACTA, it builds sensibly on provisions in the longstanding TRIPS agreement on intellectual property rights, but once again, the doctor isn't treating the disease, and the enforcement methods are arcane, ill conceived and represent a clear danger to the open internet. Note also, of course, that the current signatories are all first world countries. Good luck stopping or hindering IP infringement without the sincere and focused support of the 'second world' - growing economies like Brazil, China and India. The carrion cry is once again being delivered like a Mount Sinai sermon from the record labels and movie companies and its translation is basically this: 'We do not understand the internet, and therefore we would like it to go away.' You cannot shut off the internet just because it doesn't fit your business model. These companies have had years to come up with a better plan and they've failed. We should let them die rather than compromise the entire open internet to save them.
