SOPA
«
on:

Decided to post this in a new thread rather than divert Tom's thread from its current course.
If you haven't heard about SOPA it's basically the US's attempt at trying to control piracy on the web, but with a ridiculous law that would see the way the internet operates change dramatically.
Info here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act
more here:
http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2012-01/17/sopa-101
Tomorrow Wikipedia (and some other big sites) are effectively 'on strike' to make more people aware of what SOPA will mean for the internet if it's passed.

You read any of those articles? They're a summary of what it's about.

What do you make of this, Dan? (forget the subject, just the website).

I've read the articles Dan and I can't quite get my head round it.
Although I love to pirate things, surely something like this has to be put in place?
There will obviously be some sites caught up in the middle of this but they will just have to adapt.
To answer Raymondo, yes, internet poker will be gone within 12 months if this bill is passed.

Tom, try this, which seems to be a sort of scientiftic arm of Wiki.....
http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Main_Page
I looked up this on it just now, as a sort of "test"......
http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/LHC
Maybe someone can elaborate on what it is.
This was accessible, too....

A "wiki" is a user editable site. Wikipedia is one such. Wikipedia ≠ wiki. Wikipedia did not invent wiki.
There was an interesting article on the reg about SOPA.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01/17/beyond_sopa/
I have to say I'm pretty much in agreement with most of this. I'm not a fan of creation theft. SOPA seems ridiculously heavy handed, but if things carry on the way they are, we'll end up having nothing original being created because there's no money in it.

If you want to use wikepedia disable javascript, they are using javascript to redirect users.
If you have a phone/pad that does not use java it will still find wikipedia as normal.

Ooh, good spot!
I now find that I can access it normally via my i-Pad, though I guess it is somewhat against the spirit of the protest so to do.

The main issue is that effectively an American judge can shut down eg blondepoker because someone posts details of a sports livestream. The law is like shutting down an entire football club because one spectator shouts out abuse.

Or if you link to streams etc..you can get extradited to America and go on trial. As is the case of a Sheffield lad this week.
