Title: Bring on the snow!!!! Post by: EvilPie on February 04, 2012, 03:55:15 PM Having invested £1300 in a set of winter tyres I would just like to say that I'm particularly pleased to see snow for the first time this bloody winter!!!
Just need it to settle on the roads a bit then I'm off out to find some hills and see if they were worth the money. If I get stuck I might just kill myself. Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! Post by: leethefish on February 04, 2012, 03:57:11 PM What car have you got mate

Absolutely terrible in the snow. Got stuck a few times last year so decided to make the investment. I just want to see if they make a difference but thanks to the way I run as soon as I bought them we were almost guaranteed a snow free winter. Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! Post by: Marky147 on February 04, 2012, 04:41:02 PM I despise it with a passion, I struggle to walk on even ground at the moment and am 100% housebound if we get a load of that shit settling ;grr;
Be ok if I didn't work from home, not like I can pull a snow day because I can't get down the stairs :D Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! Post by: Graham C on February 04, 2012, 04:41:10 PM Just started here. I quite like it from indoors. I was out driving in it when it was bad a couple of years ago and ended up having to ditch the car to get home. It terrifying driving home and was glad to park it. Nearly had an arctic crash into me in the snow on the way back from the APAT Walsall a few years ago too, again another scary drive. It's fair to say I don't like driving in bad snow.....
If it gets bad this time, I'm hoping that it's ok on the roads for Monday, can't really afford to close work and the school seems to have any excuse to close. Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! Post by: mondatoo on February 04, 2012, 04:43:06 PM Used to love it as a kid, just hassle now.

The only reason they were so much is because they're run flats. Normal ones were much cheaper but then I'd have had to get a spare and risk having to change a tyre myself one day. F**k that!! Within 10 seconds I could tell they were worth the money. The confidence you get is just unbelievable. I've never felt so comfortable driving in the snow. The car just feels really stable. Accelerating away is so easy. Obviously there's a bit of slip but then it's away. The really impressive bit though is the braking and that's obviously the bit where safety comes in the most. I was able to drive at pretty much my normal speeds everywhere and felt totally at ease. The biggest problem I can see is possible over confidence but I think I'm sensible enough to give that a swerve. Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! The alpine village my wife is from is Leutasch. Amaze to see the roads are just packed snow with a bit of 'rollsplit' rolled in. Winter tyres and off they go - pretty smart things. I should probably get them as had the same problems over the last 2 years, totally unsafe and uncontrollable car which I also had to ditch a few times - don't fancy £1300 for run flats though. Did u buy a set of steel rims with them too?? They were £1300 for the 4. I could have got cheaper if I'd gone for narrower tyres on steel rims but I wanted the normal sized ones fitted to my own wheels. I got run flats too which bumped them up no end. I did quite a bit of research before I invested in them so I know I got good ones. From what I read if you get bad ones you might as well not bother. Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! I didn't have to ditch mine last year but I came very very close. It took about 5 attempts to get out of a junction which was a slight incline. Luckily I had a shovel in the car or I'd have had no chance. I also got in to a situation where I braked and the car just slid down a hill towards a bus. Luckily there was a grass verge that I knew was hiding under the snow so I headed for that and managed to find some grip. You can get them quite a bit cheaper than £1300 but not for run flats. Only thing is you need to tell your insurance company if you fit normals and your car has run flats fitted as standard. Also you'd need to buy a spare wheel. I know £1300 seems a lot but there's also the benefit that while you're using your winter tyres your summer ones are sat in the garage not wearing out. It's not like you're wearing out 2 sets of tyres at the same time, you're just running 2 sets which will obviously last twice as long between them. Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! I remember last year I'd parked my car up in a ridiculously slippery car park and really struggled walking to where I needed to be. I'm pretty stable and had decent walking boots on but it was like being on an ice rink. Some of these things would've been really handy. Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! Post by: DaveShoelace on February 04, 2012, 08:46:11 PM Honestly I have one bad slip a year and I really think it is because I am too cautious when walking on ice, these are great, you can feel the ice crunching beneath your feet and feel very very safe.
Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! Post by: EvilPie on February 04, 2012, 09:50:11 PM Wow!! Just drove in to work and it's really bad.
It appears as though Nottingham City Council in their wisdom thought it would be wise to grit absolutely nothing!! Even the main ring road has just been left to the mercy of the elements. I had to detour away from the main road because there were a few cars and a bus stuck and totally blocking the road. Unfortunately winter tyres for all their qualities can't carve a path through snow when everyone else is stuck in it!! Monday morning could be total chaos if it doesn't thaw out. Winter tyres have been confirmed as amazing by several car drivers stuck at the bottom of a hill waving me off in to the distance. Progress was slow and steady but there was constant progress. Good luck to everyone heading home from DTD. You're going to need it. Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!! Post by: leethefish on February 04, 2012, 09:57:36 PM Wow!! Actually, that's a fair point, already spend around £700 for a set of run flats on my car so the delta means if I got these my average cost of a set would become £1000. Still a lot and lucky enough to be in job where if I cant get there I can work from home. Gonna think about it though, it's a couple of mile walk to shops for me and I'm a lazy bast, Title: Re: Bring on the snow!!!!
