Title: The Apprentice 2012 thread
Post by: TightEnd on March 14, 2012, 06:11:51 PM
begins Wednesday 21st 9pm BBC1

"By day I'm a business superstar and by night I'm a professional wrestler." With just one sentence the new series of The Apprentice re-establishes the show as the UK's televisual haven for wildly overconfident fans of business-speak.

"I would call myself the blonde assassin," quips one contestant. "I'm the reflection of perfection," promises another.

Somehow Lord Sugar manages to keep a straight face. But as he launched the eighth series of the BBC's search for the brightest and best business brains – or at least the person formidable enough to see off the other contestants – the grumpiest man on TV admitted that the years had softened him.

"I suppose as you get older, you learn not to get too excited about certain things. You get mellower, I suppose," he said.

Not that viewers would necessarily notice: "I don't want a friend," Sugar tells his Apprentice wannabes in the first episode. "If I was looking for a friend I'd get a dog."

The former Labour enterprise tsar was also on blistering form when it came to the nation's youth – who, he said, spend too much time waiting to become the next Mark Zuckerberg, and not enough making it happen with small sums and hard work every day.

"That's what we've lost. That's what we need to bring back. To dispel the kind of fast-buck culture out of the minds of youngsters and to try to instil in them again that you start a business like this."

The Apprentice last year changed its format, with Sugar now offering the winner of the show a £250,000 investment into their business, in return for equity, rather than a job. And Sugar said that would-be entrepreneurs should expect to find funding and backing for their projects rather than relying on banks to help with finance without offering any collateral.

"With the greatest respect to some of the people in government, on both sides, on government and on the opposition side, they should stop all this nonsense about bank bashing, banks are not helping people blah-blah-blah.

"Because no bank is going to give a bunch of wannabes like [the Apprentice contestants] a loan," Sugar said. "Take your own money and you go out and do it. It's as simple as that."

The Apprentice boss is joined on screen once more by Karren Brady and Nick Hewer, who spend much of the first episode flinching at the decibel level generated by the teams as they attempt to flog the public yet more items they have never desired.

The boardroom is again a frightening collage of astonishingly shiny suits and lipgloss; all shifty eyes and aggressively applied eye makeup as the contestants try to escape blame for tasks that include upcycling furniture and marketing English sparkling wine.

Last year's winner, Tom Pellereau, has perhaps set a tone for a nicer, less aggressive type of Apprentice winner, Sugar suggested at the launch – although, on the basis of the first episode of the new series, fans might be hard-pressed to notice that change on screen

I can never understand why people that have set their own companies up (usually claiming to be sucessful) would ever want to apply for the show.  The job would be what I'd earn in about 10 years probably but I just don't think I could work for SAS ( actually it's LAS now isn't it) or anyone else out of choice again.

This is by far the best thing on TV by a mile.

It's just a shame that the BBC have so much other crap on, to even the balance out.

I'll be watching tonight's episode at some point this week I imagine, looking foward to it :D

1,8,6,2,4,5,3,7

6 has potential to usurp number 8. She's been absolutely done over by the seat draw. Whoever ended up looking down the barrel of the camera was gunna end up having a bit of a square jaw.

Number 1 might be the one though

All posts should conclude with

Note: Repetition of initials used by another member is very much frowned upon (this is the sovietsong law, 2011, passed into statute pre the last series)

Thank you for your consideration

Jenna's voice...fingernails on a blackboard

See little talent in the early stage in the girls team. The idea that people actually lie in a bath at the tap end?

Don't see much more in the boys team.

"I want to hear Jenna say the word KWAH so we can have a Jenna Say Kwah moment on the show"

Jenna's voice...fingernails on a blackboard

See little talent in the early stage in the girls team. The idea that people actually lie in a bath at the tap end?

Don't see much more in the boys team.

T
tap cosy was a winner imo. got in the bath with the wife a few times and always draw the tap end.

Also when they brag about having a company that 'turns over' x million pounds.

I have an idea for a company, I'll give out a £10 note in exchange for a £5 note.

I think I could have a turnover in the billions within a year.

Agree, but only since Chiles left and O'Briain took up the hosting duties.  Still the odd shocking guest on the panel but O'Briain comes across as such a genuine fan of the main programme, and is so damn quick, that he can pretty much carry the show himself.

However unlikeable the candidate is on the main show though I usually end up quite liking them on the You're Fired! show.

In the months between filimg and then You're fired (filmed 48 hours before transmission) each evictee gets media trained within an inch of their lives, paid for by the production company. Each evictee gets you're fired, a BBC breakfast and R5L appearance the next day

Dara O'B is such an expert he makes them look almost appealing, however ridiculous they are on the showRegards

This is my most favourite TV programme but its been ruined for me by the standard of the contestants.

Why don't they have iphones or access to the internet for tasks?  its not like they are not used in the real world of business.

I would also like to watch the apprentice in real time, they should adapt tv garbage like Big Brother and have the Apprentice broadcast 24/7 so we can see the real fights, and what they actually do without editing.

Greetings LIVE from freezing cold NG Overlooking the River Trent.

Looks like things could get a bit saucy. Details below.

Condiments With Maria's firing having left the girls two down, Alan Sugar evens up the sides and then challenges the collective business brains to produce and sell their own flavours of condiments. One team decides on a Mediterranean-style ketchup, while the other opts for a chilli chutney - but when the time comes to show off their products to a high-end deli, a mistake with the recipe sees the latter team pitching to the bemused buyers without any samples.

Really not drawn to any of the contestants this year - no one particularly stand-out or likeable.  A rather dull group really.  Probs give up on it mid-series if things don't hot up a bit.

I saw one of inventor Tom's curvy nail files in Sainsbury's today.  Nearly even bought one. <3 inventor Tom.

Meh, filler week for me.  Lord S popping off someone he was always going to fire at the first opportunity, the producers obviously over the moon with the boy Ricky Martin staying as he has plenty of potential to be loathsome.

Highlight was seeing Claude on You're Fired.  Lowlight was seeing Jenny Eclair on You're Fired.  Every year, every bloody year.....

Agree with this, we didn't see he was there until he cocked up that sale, then didn't see him again until the board room.    Thought the group in the firing line did the better job overall as a team, she had them working well imo.  Hopefully it'll get going soon.

I would think that they pick the worst of the best.  So get rid on the really switched on people, get rid of the people who put their suits on back to front and keep the characters.

It would be pretty boring TV to watch normal people being pretty good at stuff.

Just like X-Factor and BGT, I might watch the first 3 or 4 weeks to watch all those TV-car-crash moments but when they've settled on the talented people I lose total interest.

Who wants to watch average people being fairly good at things? (OK, except the 10 million people who do each week).

Completely agree  In future pitches they might as well say every customer gets a free bar of gold.  Wrong person fired too.  Everything about this series is screaming that either the producers are getting picks or Lord Suggs already has a preferred list of ideas for the final five.  I'm now just watching the main show to watch You're Fired in context.

Whole task last night was crap. The team that won got precisely zero orders on the basis of what they were trying to do, and only got through because the biggest gym thought it could be used for something else.

Too many anonymous people - again last night I noticed someone for the very first time (Jade?). WTF have these people been doing in previous weeks?

Only saving grace is the Scottish bridal shop owner - I've love to take her up the aisle etc.

Part of the problem is the "character" in the show, this years Baggs, is actually pretty boring and a lot better than most of them..Ricky the wrestler

All the greengrocer and the woman with the horrible voice do is succeed in annoying me

I far prefer "You are fired" as entertainment this series, the main show is what happens when lack of talent meets lack of charisma, which happened with this year's selected contestants

I remember that shows such as Big Brother got a lot of stick by upping the ante every year on getting more and more crazy and outlandish contestants, increasingly divorced from reality. 'If only they'd go back to how it was before, it was much better' the viewers would cry.

Here we see what happens when the show goes the other way and has less crazy people - zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I thought Adam should have been fired for 2 main reasons:

1) Trolley dolly

2) Not actually doing the task that was asked!

Had Adam's team won I was wondering whether he'd actually pronounce them the losing team anyway due to not following the brief.

Given that it didn't seem to be a problem they should have just opened a burger van outside the football ground.

'Gormet' Angus burger served with black pudding flavoured chunky chips £3.50 @ would have won the task... Fools!!

That said, at least the show is picking up a bit.

Still feel a bit cheated that Sir Alan has already seen the candidates business plans but cant help being a little bit excited about tomorrows episode!

Don't think this is the case is it? Jade who should have gone tonight said she should be kept in because Sugar needs to see her business proposal.

Agreed, probably Tom to win, also agreed that Jade should have gone tonight.  Thought Nick ran the group very well tonight, only mistake was not getting the stuff from the other group dropped off but until it was revealed that they were only about 4 minutes apart I was thinking it was the right decision to send them straight to the c&c.

Quite like Ricky and Adam at the moment, not in business terms but for fun.

I don't mind the odd controversial decision but some of these just seem wrong.

And the fact they're discussing business plans at this point just undermines the whole point surely.

The whole thing is getting a bit ridic.

"Jam. Every year lots of people buy Jam - your task is to go away and in 6 hours create/name/brand a revolutionary new Jam, you know the sort of work specialist Jam manufcatorers would spend £500,000 and take 6 months to do. Then I've laid you on a stall somewhere and set up meetings that the people know are fake cos it's for reality TV, and you have to go sell your new Jam to them - anyone not capable of learning about a new industry, mastering it and selling lots of Jam in >48 hours will be in the firing line, until I ignore the results of my completely pointless task and fire someone at random."

"I'd like to be team leader, whereas I have no actual experience in Jam, when I was 13 I went to a cafe in Whitby which sold Jam, and that experience taught me that the secret to Jam is organisation, team-work and someone who is capable of making strong decisions, which is clearly me"

Anyone else?

"I'd like to put myself forward as well, I actually run a specialist Jam production plant and was named Jam salesman of the year 3 times running, so pick me, watch me fail to live up to my outgragous claims, prove I'm actually just a little thick and the challenge is near on impossibly unrealistic and you've got an easy person to blame when Lord Sugar wants to know why we didn't change the face of the Jam industry in 2 days"

Nick: "well I mean, there is no direction, no leadership, and no-one is watching the figures, or working out how much they need to sell the product for! I think to be honest, they are i a bit of a Jam really."

Adam: "well, ya know, I'm a bloke so I don't know anything about Jam. We've got Laura on the team though, she's a women, and women must know about Jam right? Best idea is to leave the girls to it and wait till next week when we have to design a new fighter plane, then the boys can show em what we're made of"

It's 6am at the Big Apprentice House.
Phone call: "Lord Sugar wants to meet you at Cheeky Cockney Markets, the cars will be there in 15 minutes to pick you up."

15 minutes!  Bullshit, they're all asleep and then supposedly, 15 minutes later they're all showered, made-up, dressed and have presumably eaten.

Anyway, Tom has to be clear favourite and some of the others are just bloody awful.  Looking forward to their business plans though, that's always amusing.

Almost seems a bit sick to put Regards after that, however rules are rules.

Quite like some of the art in this weeks, especially that Copyright chap, really liked that.   What I can't work out is why there are so many scruffy types milling around London that will happily consider spending thousands on a painting whilst I worrry about pissing £20 on a footy bet.  What do they do for a living ?   I just wonder where I've made choices in life to leave me so skint in comparison.   Even given the money, I'm not sure the Big Green Monster painting will go with my red sofa, that's my excuse.

Right person went this week, bad news aside, she's never sold that well and that was all she had to do this week.

"Utterly Delicous Meatballs" yh mate, good one ;)

"I've got a terrific idea for how to create a sense of criminality in the art word - rather than having our display of Nathan where people can see him , we'll hide him out the back and tell people they can't see him - that'll get trade roaring!"

And, lets not forget his "expertise" with the gyms, lots of stuff they cant store and made up pricing in the middle of a pitch.

Adam = potential winner?

No skeletons or half-truths likely to come up in interviews; no subterfuge or game playing going on; and the boy can sell

the rest are the usual bunch of chancers and deceivers who claim 100% responsibility for successes earned by any team and 0% contribution to failure

The whole series has been pretty meh. We love to see people acting like complete donkies, all the face palm moments then getting a bollocking from sugar in the board room. It makes great tv but the people who need to be fired are the guys who pick out the final candidates for the show. . Each year they are getting duller and less memorable and I wanna see characters who stand out for whatever reasons. It's not been compulsive viewing for me this season and just hope next time they get it right.

So there's no actual final task, is that right? Just interviews and pick a winner on Sunday?

I suspect as usual it's all to do with what they are doing now, so not sure if it will be interesting or 'out of the box' like last year.

I absolute knew before watching it last night, that the one last woman (regardless of how bad or good she was in final task) would make it to the final.

Next series (if there is one), needs an update for sure. 25 minutes of the show is in the boardroom!

I think, having seen the final, that the whole 'business partner' thing has adversely impacted the original dynamic of the show.

If they repeat the same format next year, we could easily get the weakest candidate of the final 4 having the best business plan and winning by default.

After 2 series of this, I think it's safe to conclude it was a far better programme when they were trying to get a job.

SF

Edit: To correct the unforgivable lack of etiquette!
