Title: help work colleague that reeks!
Post by: paulhouk03 on May 09, 2012, 10:14:25 PM
Right

Theres a person at work that fucking reeks.

Its causing the people in our office alot of pain!

its giving us headaches and hurts our eyes occasionally. (yes its that bad it lingers all over the place)

The person in question has been told to sort himself out in the past.

We have complained about this recently to our manager and she has escalated this to the partners of the company.

but they are unwilling to do anything until the appraisals which is due in 6 weeks time.
I dont think I can take it any more.

WHAT SHOULD I DO????

Have you tried walking up to him and telling him to sort it out? It might do enough to embarrass him into showering.

When I was a young man I had a friend that at times had a certain aroma. He worked in a manual job and prob didn't shower as much as he should.  We were at another friends (sick brag 2x friends) house playing wrestlemainia on the N64. My mates mum walked in and said "it fucking stinks in here" while spraying airfreshener at our friend.  I think I saw a tear roll down his cheek... From that day on our friend smelled right nice.

Dunt take ten minutes to get a rate good wesh!!

I think  it's when he is stressed and under pressure
He stinks the most

Obv pointing out that he should shower doesn't really help in this situation

Put together a gift basket containing a flannel, shower gel, toothbrush and paste, deodorant and a nice aftershave along with a secret note outlining yours and your colleagues concern about his personal hygiene and how it's very unpleasant to work with.

IIRC, its not the sweat that smells, something to do with existing bacteria on the person. So he is either not washing or he has a medical condition, i would plump for not washing!

If your clothes are washed properly, and clean on, and you've showered and used deodorant that morning, it's unlikely you'll smell of strong BO by the end of the day. Some people will rarely have a condition that makes them smell bad no matter how hard they try to stop it, and sometimes it can be related to chemicals in certain foods they eat reacting in their body.

There was someone I used to work with who had a nasty odour, until one day he smelt fine. The following day he was smelling bad again and the only difference was his trainers. Ended up being the trainers that were causing the problem. I think they'd got wet or something and had effectively gone off!

Google "Anonymous email".
"Dear Sir. You may not realise it, but you have a body odour problem. Your friends and work colleagues would very much appreciate it if you could do something about it. Thanks"

there aren't any, really. We ban duplicate accounts if we identify them. I imagine the person was planning a little sport at Paul's expense

Only way to deal with it is by his line manager approaching it in a professional and discreet manner. If he doesn't respond to that then he should receive or be offered medical support through an occupational health professional.

It's down to the manager to deal with. Don't resort to bullying, isolation or trying to deal with it yourself or you could find yourself in bother.

This ^^^^

Only other thing you could do if the manager is stalling is leave some deodorant in his desk drawer of something? He just might get the hint?

You said he smells bad when under pressure. The rest of the office should do extra work to ease the burden and help him relax.

Just have a quiet word and tell him, he might not even realise.
