Title: Vegas Virgin
Post by: mronetime on May 22, 2012, 03:02:57 PM
My mate has just won a trip to vegas on june 30th from playing pub poker, so I have finally talked the wife round to letting me go with him!

I know there is probably 100's threads on vegas but I would just like a bit advice on places to avoid and places worth playing poker. I know WSOP is on but those events our not covered by our bankroll!!

all in put welcome

Don't bother walking further North than Encore.  By day, there's nothing there worth going to anyway.  By night, you won't feel too safe either.  Downtown, don't venture away from Fremont St Canopy.

The main poker action is going to be Venetian/Pallazzo/Bellagio/Caesars/Rio/MGM/Aria/Wynn.  Downtown is Nugget/Binions.  Once you have gone through that lot, you will have a better idea of what's what and searching out places you like/don't like should be all part of the fun for your first trip.

There are iphone apps, websites, magazines, threads on Blonde etc that cover the cheap shove-fest tournaments at random casinos also.

Dont waste your time or money with fancy restaurants, get yourself to Planet Hollywood and lookout for this sign.

I will be interested to see if you agree with Milligan, that it is better than the amazing selection of good restaurants in Vegas, or if you agree with me that it is no more than a mediocre sarnie only slightly above the Tesco Finest range.

Sandwiches are sandwiches to me, I base Milligans appraisal of the place on the fact he's a tight crabfat and just doesn't like spending stripclub tokens on food (which is surprising) ;popcorn;

I'm in the Palazzo from the 1st, great resort with brilliant restaurants and of course Grand Lux which is the business!!

I'm with Stuart on this one.  I prefer Capriottis, but ultimately, they are sarnies ~ ok for a pit stop.  Places like HashHouse or Peppermill are also medicore with oversized portions seemingly the main attraction. For a few dollars more, there are a many many great dining options that don't break the bank.

Other year i went for 5 nights, whilst i predominantly drank the whole time, I only consumed food from one other establishment the once.

Its like Subway x 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Mediocre and EoS in the same sentence brought a tear to my eye Stu.

Marky its not just a sammich, its THEEEEEEE Sammich. *ding dong think thats your Chinese at the door mate.

The food snobs below probs don't rate it though.

Subway x infinity doesn't really carry much weight :D

Even if it's 'the sammich' it is still a sandwich and the kind of thing I'd scoop up at 6am on the way back from the OG

Takeaways in Dorchester are in mourning at present, they're collectively about a ton down a week while I am back on the wagon until Vegas ;)

Agree completely!!!  I went to HashHouse in November after hearing so many rave reviews and would never go again.  Meh at best, but they hide the fact by giving you a huge mound of meh on your plate making you think it's value.

There's a HHAGG in the Imperial Palace, just go there. Saves on taxi fares and food is awesome.

Agree, don't do it. TBH it vaguely resembles food.

EofS is the nuts and excellent value

for big choice on a budget try the hotel buffet (some do a champagne Brunch on a Sunday)

oh and Caesars food court for lunch choices from around the world.

Best burgers...

Forget In'n'Out Burger and Fatburger.

Look at (and then forget) BLT @ Mirage, Le Burger @ Paris, Burger Place @ Mandalay, Stripburger.

Try out Holsteins @ Cosmo.  (Also the Colorado Burger @ Bellagio Snax is ok for the 'value hunters')

For the real winners, go to Delomonicos (Venetian) or Carnevino (Palazzo) at lunchtime and try their burgers.  Doesn't have to be super-formal, can eat at their bar area, only a few dollars more.  Come back and tell me Fatburger was better.

The thing is it's all subjective much like steaks, everyone has their favourite gaff and people are never going to have the same opinions on what they perceive to be best.

Can't say I remember having a burger anywhere other than the Burger Palace at IP after coming out of the Karaoke Club leathered :D

This was my first port of call when I got up every afternoon when I stayed at PH. Stay away from the cash games in there tho, tag teams all over the place.

Lol tag teams never heard them called that before. Come across a couple in the Monte Carlo, one of them a drunk man and wife team, pulling faces at each other. Earl of sandwich OK would'nt go overboard about it.  Bills casino near Ballys good food and 2 1/2 pints jugs of excellent miller light for $7. Use service bus for getting up and down strip and even downtown. $7 24 hour pass and they run all night. Harley davidson bar food ok nice spot watching it all go by. Beer expensive though $9 bottle of Corona, which pisses you off when you can get it downtown for $2. Enjoy.

I thought Hash House was ok, went to the one on Sahara west of the strip.

Regarding Burgers, In n Out and Fatburger are fast food chains really. They are better than McDonalds etc imo but you are obv going to get a better burger in a restaurant.

For the same money, Fatburger/In'n'Out >>>> McDs/Dennys (even with staff discount..  ;whistle;)

By the same logic, rather than paying $15 in BLT, wander over the road and pay $15 in Delmonico/Carnevino.  People are queuing down the corridor to get into BLT (and it really isn't great) whilst Delmonicos is empty.

It isn't about balla or food snobbery or anything else.  If you are going to spend $3 on a burger, get the best $3 burger there is.  If you are going to spend $15, may as well get the best $15 one available.

Society Cafe @ Encore was pretty good spot for lunch ~ not saying it wouldn't be for other meals, I just didn't eat there at any other time of day.  Nowhere near as wide a menu as GL, but plenty to choose from.  They were doing bento-style lunch choices (small salad, slider, dessert) which hit the right spot.
