I am all up chocolate and ice cream but not when i am drinking/drunk. All about savouries when drinking imo, so yeah only crisps are a good purchase in this spot imo.

Eating is cheating, definite no no whilst consuming alcohol, afterwards it's all you can eat for sure, not during!

You can get Vodka that tastes like paint stripper, you can get vodka that isn't even 40%, both are a lot worse than Smirnoff.

As for Carling, of the popular lagers sold in this country I prefer it to Fosters, Carslberg, Bud which is horrid, Becks, Perino in a bottle is filth.

I once drank a pint of comfort fabric softener after having consumed a bottle of Glenns vodka and the remains of JD bottle. I phoned NHS helpline the next morning and said I think I have a problem. They told me to go to hospital, I said let me see how I feel after a bacon sarnie first. Right as rain.

Glenns vodka was lethal. I'm sure it gave me tempoary blindness once.

Haha, I actually know that, obv, but cba to type the extra digits. So many of my posts you could pick, choosing to point out a 2.5% difference is just weak.

Can't really see a problem with Carling tbh. Whilst certainly not my first choice I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as some are making out.

Smirnoff on the other hand is absolutely terrible. It's only recently that I've become a bit of a vodka snob and I'm so happy to have been converted.

Like Monda I used to think that Smirnoff was actually a quality vodka. I now know that whilst perfectly acceptable as a drink to mix with red bull to get you hammered it's plain awful when compared to nice vodkas.

To be fair I haven't sampled too many decent vodkas yet. Grey Goose is confirmed as lovely, Belvedere is my personal favourite. No doubt to some these still aren't classed as quality.

Any time I see one that I haven't tried though I'll give it a go. I've learnt that price isn't an indicator of quality by the way. The most expensive was £27 for a shot and it was f**king horrible!!

I don't mind Carling, I quite like most beers, I'm not a snob about it, a pint is a pint.  I'm not a fan of becks though.  I have a bottle of Grey Goose in the cupboard, unopened.  Never tried it before but someone gave it to us a while back.  May have to have a sample later.

Poor Woodsey, comes in with his girly snacks and an honest discussion, and everyone complains about the booze.

I have no clue about vodka btw. Although I was pissed, ofc, when I had grey goose I couldn't tell the difference.

I do believe I know a little bit about lager and Carling is decent.

I don't think Smirnoff is a quality vodka, just know I've tasted worse whereas couldn't say I've tasted better, but that's just because I'm always half cut before I go onto Vodka and then I have 1/3 of the glass vodka and 2/3 mixture which develops to 1/2 and 1/2 so it's never really going to taste great.

give this a try if you see it matt, think it's the only fair trade vodka and it's the first one to be made with quinoa. had quite a bit at a tasting/cocktail making session, it's really good stuff

No, I just rounded up. I accidentaly bought a bottle of vodka once (labelled vodka) that was 20%ish, think it was terps in a bottle.

Have had other vodka's that are 40% :P that tasted a lot harsher than Smirnoff does when drunk straight.

£35 a bottle, I'll take 3 bottles of Smirnoff thanks.

known as 'szarlotka' in poland which means apple pie/tart. slightly confusing as most bars also serve an apple pie so waiters have to decide whether you're there to drink or eat cake. for some reason they always bring me the liquid version, must be something about the way I look

Do you really think Smirnoff is a worse taste - or even the same level - as something like Vladivar vodka?

If I drank them neat I think I'd struggle to tell the difference. Basically they both taste like paint stripper and probably do the same job as well.

Obviously with a mixer which is the way God intended them to be drank it makes no difference anyway.

Vladivar, made in Warrington but with a Russian sounding name so it must be the real deal.

I've only drunk smirnoff with mixers for a very long time, and I think I've only ever bought one bottle of Vladivar (when money was really really tight) - maybe I just have more taste buds to tell the difference with - but the really cheap supermarket stuff still makes the drink taste bad even when you have a mixer in it (imo).

For me it was simply the first time I ever drank a vodka that actually tasted nice.

I'd always classed smirnoff as a 'premium' vodka because that's what the adverts lead me to believe.

Because of this I'd drank smirnoff neat a few times and thought that vodka was disgusting because smirnoff was disgusting.

It was only when someone suggested I try a grey goose and I instantly loved it that I realised there were nice vodkas out there too.

I'm far from being an expert and have never used the word 'nuance' when talking about any form of alcohol but I know what tastes nice to me.

Gonna try a grey goose in a bit to see if there is a difference, never had one. I thought they are mostly the same when you have a mixer iin, guess I will,find out shortly,if that is true.

Btw how did we go from me making a random drunk post to arguing about vodka and shit?  :D

Don't have a mixer. Just a few ice cubes is perfect.

If you don't like it you can always bung half a can of redbull in afterwards.

To be honest if you're still sober you should notice the difference even with a mixer but def try it neat first.

A good few years ago I was at the bar at my local club. A discussion on vodka started and some bloke insisted he could tell the good stuff from the cheap stuff. The barman was a bit of a character and agreed to put this guy to the test. So he gets two glasses, puts a measure of smirnoff blue in one and a cheap brand in the other. He then switches the glasses back and forth under the counter and places them on top the bar so only he knows what glass the good one is in. So matey asks for a glass of water, samples glass A, swills it about a bit, takes a sip of water then samples glass B. Pretty quickly he points to glass A and says "thats the good stuff". The barman nods and congratulates him confirming that he really does know his vodka and agrees that its worth the extra 50p or whatever it cost. As matey walks away, the barman turns to us and says "funny thing is it's the same stuff in both bottles, I got it down the cash and carry".

That's my only vodka story.  :)

 

The only difference I can really tell when a mixer is in it is whether it's dirt cheaper supermarket own brand label vodka - or not

All the super duper extra filtered ones taste very similarly

Then all the specialist one's like the uluvka one's have their 'own' flavours because they do things like deliberately filter it less to give it more flavour - or flavour's get added. They're one's that I don't think you can really spoil with a mixer.

It's like bottled mineral water - the exact make up of the minerals in them will give them all a slightly different flavour - but a fairly substantial proportion of the population will drink them and just taste 'water'.

Cheers for the response, been a moderate cider drinker all my life because of how sweet they are. Tried a guiness about 2 months ago, finished the pint and felt like i had a meal, not for me. Also was at a party and i sweat bucket loads so wanted some water, saw what appeared to be a bottle of highland spring on a table, half full. Went to down it. That's straight vodka. Puddles of it surrounded the floor beside me after it projectile spat it out. JD and coke has been my only attempt at drinking spirits really.

yeah they do generally but I was on western wages and lived like a king and there are some awesome brands as well as terrible ones. I have drunk an awful lot of paintstripper with locals too though, most of it was better than smirnoff

Or you down it and then wait until afterwards to get the taste. Anytime i have dealt with any straight spirit i down it as fast as possible and always struggled with it, but feel good soon after obv. Defo sip it to appreciate the texture and taste. You can even have a smell if you like. Downing it is totally out of the question.

You'll need a decent glass for it as well. 24% lead crystal tumbler should do the trick. It may sound stupid but it really does make a difference.

You should notice that despite getting ridiculously drunk on this stuff that your hangover is relatively mild. Don't know why this is but it's always the case.

If you're lucky they might have a Black Label. Not tried it myself but supposed to be decent.

Smirnoff Black Label is what I drank at university when I could - I can't be sure of actual quality, but the fact that you could drink it neat straight from the freezer and I liked it's flavour was a good sign.

nah adam, toffoc is actually a vodka liquer. the vodka that goes into it will be at least 37.5% otherwise it's not vodka, it's then watered down and the flavourings are added to make that wonderful drink

Just bought a small bottle of this grey goose stuff, tested it next to sainbury's own brand, they taste a bit different but I can't honestly say one is any better than the other if I'm honest.
