Title: Cob, Roll, Other? Post by: permanentquandary on May 28, 2012, 09:53:58 PM Important trivia. Now there's an oxymoron.
Referring to a savoury bread a la bacon roll/cob, which is the right word? Title: Re: Cob, Bun, Other? Post by: Woodsey on May 28, 2012, 09:57:28 PM Can't vote mate, I lived in a few places and I've heard those two plus 'roll' equally, although in the east mids its deffo cob. ;kev;

Cob in the midlands Bun if you are Cambridge Alex. Title: Re: Cob, Bun, Other? Post by: kinboshi on May 28, 2012, 09:58:33 PM Depends where you are. If you're in Nottingham you'd ask for a cob, in Scotland possibly a bap, in Manchester you might ask for a barm cake. None are wrong, but when you ask for a bread roll you need to pick the right term for the person you're speaking to.

Title of thread should be "Cob, ROLL, Other?" And in Kent they say roll. I should know, that's where I'm from. Furthering the discussion, I would wager that the word roll is a shortened version of the word "sweetroll". Back in the day, a bygone era, such a word was commonplace, however now it is seldom used. The sweetroll has evolved from being another word for a dessert or tea cake to being savoury, relating to meat and pickle and sandwichlike accoutrements. Such as gherkins. Bun may also be making the savoury transition, like a thief in the night. Or a cunning ninja snail. Buttie is right out (a la Monty Python's Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch count of three, FIVE IS RIGHT OUT, the number shall be THREE). This is specifically a sandwich containing chips or bacon. Possibly egg but that's verging on offensive. Cob seems alien to me. Breadcake also. WTF is a barmcake?! As for bap, in Kent you can get away with it. But there will be a smirk from someone. Title: Re: Cob, Bun, Other? Post by: DMorgan on May 29, 2012, 04:39:35 AM Roll
(http://www.countrystyle.co.uk/images/large/softroll13.jpg) Finger Rolls (http://www.countrystyle.co.uk/images/banner-softrolls01.jpg) Baps (http://www.tab1.de/h4h/cccomp_baps/baps17.jpg) Buns (http://edge.ebaumsworld.com/mediaFiles/picture/202553/82407645.png) Much like Federer vs Nadal, Hendry vs White and Magic Johnson vs Larry Bird; baps and buns will always be trying to out-do each other. Much like the sporting rivalries the real winners are the spectators. (http://www.fhm.com/imgs/630/500/0/original/280317_fullsizeimage_Rosie_Jones_Bum_Flag.jpgx) Title: Re: Cob, Roll, Other? Title: Re: Cob, Roll, Other? Post by: Jon MW on May 29, 2012, 12:11:25 PM A roll and a cob are different things.
I've had cobs in Nottingham and Derbyshire, and I've had rolls in the South - I'm not a baker so I don't know the difference, but there definitely is one. Title: Re: Cob, Roll, Other? Post by: david3103 on May 29, 2012, 01:05:50 PM We moved to Nuneaton from Northampton in 1977 - always had rolls in Northampton, but Nuneaton had batches
In fact, they had a lot of corner shops that had signs proclaiming them to be 'Batch Bars' which sold all manner of comestibles as long as they were encased in a batch. Batch bars were, at the time, unique to Nuneaton and Bedworth. ninja edit - they've spread to the Northern end of Coventry http://www.invitationbook.co.uk/offers/editions/cove/food_to_go/COVE-3-93 Title: Re: Cob, Roll, Other?
