A roll and a cob are different things.
I've had cobs in Nottingham and Derbyshire, and I've had rolls in the South - I'm not a baker so I don't know the difference, but there definitely is one.

We moved to Nuneaton from Northampton in 1977 - always had rolls in Northampton, but Nuneaton had batches
In fact, they had a lot of corner shops that had signs proclaiming them to be 'Batch Bars' which sold all manner of comestibles as long as they were encased in a batch.
Batch bars were, at the time, unique to Nuneaton and Bedworth.
I suspect they are extinct now
ninja edit - they've spread to the Northern end of Coventry

Right I have done some research and so I speak the truth.
Teacakes are cakes served with tea..
Buns come from Chelsea
Baps have burgers in them
and sometimes cheese...
Bread rolls are savoury round things made of bread.
and Cobs; well I think its northern for burnt!

A photo would help, but I'm guessing you're talking about a teacake.

It's a Batch. I'm next door to Watford Gap and we have an "Arnies Batch Bar" I would also deem Bap, Buttie and Roll acceptable but prefer Batch.

True story:
I went to stoke for a chess competition when I was about 15 and, between rounds, went for some lunch. I walked into a cafe and asked the nice lady "do you have any baps?"
Apparently they don't call rolls/cobs that there... It was quite awkward!
