Title: PhD project survey - poker related Post by: magiska on May 29, 2012, 05:12:01 PM Hello,
My name is Daniel Kardefelt Winther, I am a PhD student at the Department of Media and Communications, London School of Economics. In much of the media coverage today, online based hobbies such as poker, gaming or gambling receives a lot of negative attention. It is claimed to be harmful, a waste of time or "addictive". My PhD project aims to criticise these arguments which are often founded on poor research using unsuitable methods. Furthermore, such research is often done by people who are not gamers or gamblers and therefore do not have a good grasp of the topic. The overall aim of my PhD is to give more legitimacy to online-based activities as a regular hobby. This survey is the main data collection for my PhD. It will ask questions about your online poker playing, your thoughts and feelings about playing and not playing, some questions about possible negative or positive outcomes of your playing and also some questions about you. For those of you who are Facebook users or World of Warcraft players, there will be an opportunity to answer questions about these platforms as well, as these are the platforms I am interested in. The survey can be found here: https://lse.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_blNenw7bhDb6Jwg If you have any questions at all about the project or my survey, please do not hesitate to contact me: d.a.kardefelt-winther @ lse.ac.uk Best regards, Daniel Title: Re: PhD project survey - poker related Post by: kinboshi on May 29, 2012, 11:27:15 PM :hello:

Mick Jagger shares his birth date with me, but when I applied to study at the London School of Economics I was rejected. Could you shed any light on this?
Completed the survey, good luck with the project. Right now I am more interested in your thoughts and opinions about online poker :) Sorry, bad industry joke! Survey finished, good luck with the results and Phd. FYI, I thought the social media section missed identifying people who are spending a percentage of their time on work related online activity as opposed to wholly personal. If that's a variable you're interested in of course. Title: Re: PhD project survey - poker related Post by: magiska on May 30, 2012, 02:28:51 AM Does it ask for my username and full tilt password? FYI, I thought the social media section missed identifying people who are spending a percentage of their time on work related online activity as opposed to wholly personal. If that's a variable you're interested in of course. I am very interested in this variable, though perhaps more on a philosophical level than for the purposes of this survey! I think it's a difficult variable to measure for, considering how pervasive and integrated internet use has become in modern society. For example, I check my work-email quite consistently even if I'm gaming....does that make my internet use personal or work-related? Or both? Or neither? It raises the very interesting question of whether we should even attempt to classify online use....difficult to crack that one :) Title: Re: PhD project survey - poker related Post by: Gazza on May 30, 2012, 09:37:26 AM Survey done, when do I get my FPPs? :)
Title: Re: PhD project survey - poker related Post by: luther101 on May 30, 2012, 12:29:53 PM GL with the Ph D, though I feel you've omitted the two most pertinent questions for the online poker player,
Namely; a) Which takeaway can produce a facial eruption large enough to play "Squeeze, and Splat the Cat"? 1) MaccieDees 2) KFC 3) A lamb bhuna from the Beast of Bengal and; b) Have you ever bent the Richard (or in some cases, no 'the' req) over the monitor and kicked her/ Bloody workshy, lentil munching, soap dodger etc etc .... blah, blah Title: Re: PhD project survey - poker related Post by: MC on May 30, 2012, 02:46:07 PM Done, although it seems to be aimed at recreational not professional poker players :)

Can confirm no itching or scratching yet Title: Re: PhD project survey - poker related Post by: magiska on May 30, 2012, 08:56:23 PM No no, no virus...this is a very innocent survey. :)
And well, it has my name attached to it...so I could expect angry visitors if I did something fishy :( Keyloggers and such are really ruining the process of online data collection, I have to say. Also: This is by far the most responsive and active forum I've visited, I very much appreciate all the responses I get from you guys :) Title: Re: PhD project survey - poker related Post by: magiska on June 01, 2012, 12:55:23 PM Bumping this a bit for visibility :)

Title: Re: PhD project survey - poker related Post by: jackinbeat on July 23, 2012, 02:55:00 PM Survey completed, I'd agree with the fact this is aimed at recreational players, hope it's not going to lead to more bed press, got the sense it was leading you to answer negatively on whole in regards to time spent online, addictive possibilities, and social/relationship issues.
What will the results be used for? Title: Re: PhD project survey - poker related Post by: magiska on July 23, 2012, 10:09:21 PM The resulting data will be used as a basis for my PhD. I aim to show that there are differences in how people engage with different online platforms both in terms of what they use them for, but also in the subsequent outcomes. I am not focusing on the negative aspect, rather I tried to incorporate a balance of positive and negative outcomes as these are important for comparative purposes. Only talking about what people do is not quite as interesting as if you can relate it somehow to outcomes, although I do by no means aim to discuss causality, rather tendencies.
