Can someone explain to me the role of a Hitter in tennis?  In the Jame Ward and Fish match, Borris mentioned that James Ward used to be employed as a hitter earlier in his career.  Is this like a sparring partner in boxing?

thanks

Practice partner for a Pro, to simulate the characteristics of a particular opponent, often

James Ward was one, then at 24 got LTA funding.

2/1 on betfair?!!  Great news seeing as I backed him to win before the tournament started at 20/1 (or thereabouts).  The plan was always to lay him in the quarters or semis...

Yeah, looks good to me. Question is how long do I wait until I think he'll become Scottish again?

I'd stick it out and lay him in the final, I could be wrong but think he'd play Tsonga in the semi's so guess you could lay then if you wanted to be nitty.

Been thinking about this; Feds on the other side of the draw to Murray. I know he always struggles to beat federer on big occasion but surely he would want djok vs fed in semi so it's a harder game for them in lead up to final?

Rather than djok strolling to a straight set victory in time to put his feet up for the final? Or is this flawed thinking

Some match nonetheless

Surely Murray is fitter than Federer so if he can take it to 5 he has a chance ?

You missed the end of a great game of tennis, that´s for certain. His serve was fine, not quite up to earlier standards but he was being put uder a huge amount of pressure from the greatest player in the history of the game, the guy a deserves a bit of slack and a lot of credit.

The reason he lost had (almost) nothing to do with Murray, he actually played very well. It had everything to do with Federer. To say Murray played badly fails to recognize the fact he just got beaten by the best player of all time playing at his best.  Nobody would have beaten Federer today. FACT. ;-)

Well, I agree with most of that. I certainly don't begrude him winning, certainly one of the greatest and he is just fantastic to watch.   Call me patriotic, but I'd just like to have had a British winner today.

Murray's first serve when it goes in, is extremely effective. He definitely had more unreturned serves than Federer today.

His problem is his first serve in % and a weak 2nd serve.

I gonna go ahead assume you haven't see Murray play a lot if you had to turn off after a few sets as he played well today.

So ridiculous to be critical of Murray, though in fairness, there's not much on here..but I hear it a lot. Lack of mental toughness etc etc.

Probably only 3 people, all time, in the world who have ever been able to play it better.

These are my exact thoughts.

When Murray got in his first serve they was a lot more effective than RF's, but he was failing more often than not getting in his first serve. His second serves was also meaningless and even when RF was on his second serve, they was a lot more effective than RF's.

I am not saying he played bad, but was extremely disappointing to see how many times he had to use a second serve. I think this was perhaps why the game did not go to a 5 setter.

I also think his attitude is wrong, you looked at both players throughout and Murray was always frustrated, whilst RF always looked composed. There was also fitness issues, commentary said that they think Murray was the fitter player, but again, he looked a lot more knackered than RF, but perhaps this because RF had him running around all game?

I agree that his 2nd serve isn't great, think it's the weakest part of his game and possibly the only thing left he needs to improve. He definitely competed today and could've won it imo, hopefully he'll get there soon.

Post by: sweet potata! on July 09, 2012, 02:04:40 AM
His 2nd serve is obviously weak but at the same time for the first 2/3 sets Fed was just chipping them back down the middle and was not really punishing it.

The rain coming is what cost Murray, once the roof closed  fed was creaming his forehand beautifully before that he was a bit erratic.

Hes a great player but think that might be pushing it a bit.

Obviously we are in the golden era of tennis but to suggest Murray would beat Agassi, Sampras, Becker, Borg etc. is a little folly imo.

I am a bit worried about what the game will be like after Nadal, Djokovic and Federer. In 6 or 7 years are we going to be left with the likes of Dimitrov, Raonic and Tomic fighting out for grand slams. Could be depressing. Surely some new stars will come through but there is a lack of talent in players aged 17-22 at the moment. Nadal and Federer were being massively talked about as young as 15. Not heard any rumours of future greats coming through in the last couple of years. It could be a very poor period after the quality of tennis we have been used to over the last 6 or 7 years and the sport could lose popularity.
