Title: The battle of Hastings
Post by: TightEnd on June 25, 2012, 02:36:09 PM
It has been quite a frustrating couple of weeks for UK & Ireland players at the 2012 World Series of Poker, where they seem to be able to go deep in plenty of vents but are losing out in key spots that are needed to push them over the finishing line. One man who has had a frustrating time whilst very deep in two events is JP Kelly, who recently busted in 10th place in Event #41, the $3,000 No Limit Hold'em Event.

Kelly grinded his way to the unofficial ten-handed final table but from there it seemed like he just could not get going, despite a legion of rowdy fans on the rail; fans who had been drinking since early morning in “preparation” for the England versus Italy game at Euro 2012. You can imagine how loud they were inside the Rio!

Just as play went 10-handed Kelly tweeted “Just under 1,4m going into unofficial final,” but three hours later it appeared he had been treading water when he wrote, “1m chips at the dinner break.....still 10 handed and very card dead, but it's all good :-)” However, two hours later he was out in 10th place after losing with queens to ace-seven then pushing {A-}{10-} into {A-}{Q-Clubs}.

JP_Kelly5 JP Kelly "Busted in 10th......lost QQ v A7 and then shoved AT into AQ......thanks for support everyone, really frustrating how my finals are going :(" June 24 2012

Let's go back to that infamous British rail, something that has become of the fixtures and fittings at the WSOP. A Brit makes the final table, a huge rail shows up to support them. Sometimes they are a little over the top but for the most part they are just loud. Personally I see nothing wrong with it but so far this year Justin Bonomo has complained and Brian Hastings actually anti-sweated Kelly and wished he would bust in 10th place.

brianchastings Brian Hastings "Looks like they're sweating JP Kelly. I'm sure JP is a swell guy but really hope he gets 10th. ‪#shutuprail‬" June 24 2012

Kelly was quite polite, politer than many would be, in his response to Hastings writing simply:

JP_Kelly5 JP Kelly "@brianchastings You got your wish, I did come 10th, good luck." June 24 2012

My money is on the British Rail. Yours?

Does the final comin gup with channing in run remotely close to the $50k champ? Pretty sure hastings , bonomo etc are in that.

100 strong UK rail make the most noise possible until all ejected etc. Sing loud enough about hastings and bonomo.

Last year when one of Mercier's horses was on a final with middy or moorman (think moorman) we were having hilarious banter with him, the brazilians on criags rail were really funny as well.

When it's taken it the right manner, it's funny, we all have a few drinks and a great laugh. Why the people playing in the same room complain? Like really Hastings? you're a pro poker player and you cant concentrate with a bt of noise in the background who the fuck are you. Stop taking life so seriously.

I've played in pretty high stakes games where high $'s are moving around all the time and there is so much banter/talking/noise etc but then lets be honest colluding vs isildur is literally ALL he's ever done in poker

While the twat quotient has been high on twitter about this, surely us lot have to understand this is a cultural thing too. The Americans just don't behave like this. It's as tilting to them as the USA USA USA chants or the vuvuzela is to some brits.

Hastings handling himself pretty well in a twitter chat with lildave at the moment. Good to see. No need for a war. A bit of consideration and understanding on both sides and everyone is happy. That said he should apologise to JP.

Brian Hastings ‏@brianchastings

Pretty sick and tired of people spewing false info about me. Never shared a single HH, this has been explained. Slander/libel is not coo

Brian Hastings ‏@brianchastings

Conduct of Brits in the hallway is just insane. I couldn't care less what they think but yelling that word? Terrible for poker's image

Brian Hastings ‏@brianchastings

C**t has no business being said in a public place, especially around women. Pretty embarrassing to have to associate with people like that.

Brian Hastings ‏@brianchastings

+1 RT @ShaneSchleger: Could not disagree more with @tuckonsports --poker SHOULD be like tennis/golf wrt spectators.

Yeah that's spot on. Shouting at someone in a public hallway calling them a c*** is going way too far. Ironically makes you look like a c***.

Noooo, why? And so we forfeit any argument of fun railing being good for the game. That word is the only strong one left in our language, and so this kind of thing will be remembered. Why not something funny instead? A bunch of lines starting "we're sure you're a swell guy, but...." Let's remember that he was good enough to get into a respectful discussion with us afterwards, and even retweeted the Boldie thread.

Our argument is of course spot on, and 99% of the railing is great for the game, but it's only fair if this kind of thing completely turns it against us.

We are bringing something new to poker, and need to persuade the Americans that it is a good thing. Let's remember that they have practically zero undersanding of what it is all about. The reason is that they have no away fans at any sports game, and so the notion of funny, friendly banter is completely alien to them. We're also working agains "Britain's" general reputation of football hooliganism abroad, which only we know to be unfair, as it's now completely outdated.

It's inevitable, and completely fair, that some poker players will express reservations against it, especially at the start. They even have a good point. Our job is to persuade the world that we have a better one. Brian Hastings' original argument was not expressed the right way, but he has the right to feel he has won the class argument now.

Railing could add a new, great dimension to the whole game, and one that we ourselves started. However, being drunk is going to be a guaranteed and tricky feature to work against, and just maybe our trial period has proved that, as a group, it's impossible to make it work, and it's time to get out before it hurts us?

Yeah, the final line I guess is only a hypothetical thought. The stronger option is to think as a group what small changes we need to make, and show the world how it can be done.

not especially easy to be thinking them when the group is completely wrecked, though

Agree. I think for that reason it's worth everyone thinking about it before the drunkeness kicks in, and just having a few simple ground rules.

On Craig's rail, the reaction from the security was of course ridiculously over the top and American. However, they had asked a couple of times for no noise during the hands, and used the smallest breaking of this as an excuse to manhandle thugs like LilDave out of the arena. I reckon we can beat this by being completely silent through the hands, and getting even louder in between.

I made a mistake on Flushy's rail, which was the original one. There was a historic moment as Eames got thrown out, and so I started shouting "cheerio" at him, only to realise in horror that the 4th place finisher was walking alongside him, and to be left hoping it wasn't misconstrued. I reckon we continue to beat anyone potentially feeling left out by giving everyone an ovation as they are eliminated.

Poker, as a spectacle, is behind any sport, as there is no sense of atmosphere. That's the reason why the British railing really does add a new dimension, and the reason why it has already won some significant admirers. I think we can continue to persuade people by making it a loud, positive atmosphere, and even to persuade people that a big part of that positive atmosphere is the cheeky banter.

Funnily enough, it might just be falling on the Brits now to shape it for a long time to come.

i think we let ourselves down by not giving him some hilarious (but harsh) banter - we've got enough wit in the group to abso rinse him without shouting c*nt at volume in public, we're better than that.

Seems like we hit both ends- the only lame football chant, and the only offensive word left in the language- when we should have gone in between.

He's fed us the opening line for goodness sake. Needed a series of "we're sure you're a swell guy, but we hope you go bust," "we're sure you're a swell guy, but we love John Eames" "we're sure you're a swell guy, but you robbed Isildur," etc
