Title: Football Nostalgia Post by: Longy on September 15, 2012, 02:17:56 AM Lets face it the beautiful game was the best when we were growing up. The game was fresh and we weren't so cyncial.
Post your favourite players, memories, incident etc of yesteryear. What inspired me for this thread was this man YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq6y3Cf8sBA I have never been or ever will be a supporter of Man City(especially the club they are today) but Kinkladze was an amazing player to watch in a terrible team, pure football romance! Don't tell my wife but this man was the true love of my life..... Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: maldini32 on September 15, 2012, 02:48:01 AM Amazing number of similarities between Kinkladze and Messi.

Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: Horneris on September 15, 2012, 04:05:26 AM Great thread.
I had no idea Kinkladze was that good. I loved natural finishers like Fowler and Shearer, they were so so good at finding the back of the net every single time. There are no strikers as incred at finishing as they were anymore, I'd never trust the likes of Rooney, Van Persie or Aguero with a one on one as much as I would have Shearer or Fowler. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaxcdUgHm74 just look at the ball control, balance, awareness and not to mention skill what a player dont take my word for it "About the 1990 World Cup quarter-final against Yugoslavia in Italy. From that generation of Yugoslavian players I remember Dragan “Piksi” Stojkovic and I often ask how he and Dejan are doing. Piksi was an incredible footballer – moved across the park with such ease – it was like dancing with the most beautiful girl. He was a true star. Diego Maradona in 2012." still got it as the last ten seconds shows! Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: millidonk on September 15, 2012, 08:36:23 AM Amazing thread!
Gonna have a little think about my most spine tingling moment, just so many to choose from. +1 to the Fowler love. He was worshipped in our house and rightfully claimed the space on the back of my top until Owen won my heart. When we were commentating on ourselves I would always be Owen, Gazza or If I was feeling a little continental, Ravanelli. (he scored a hatrick against us on his debut for boro, I was at that game and was utterly stunned by watching him. Ended 3-3) if you were in goal it would be Seaman ldo Edit. when i scored a screamer i would often shout Le Tissier who was another hero. this is the single best performance ive ever seen by a player super chrissy waddle Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: kinboshi on September 15, 2012, 09:42:39 AM Dalglish in his prime was brilliant. Best player I've seen in the premier league is probably Henry.
Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: MANTIS01 on September 15, 2012, 10:05:44 AM 86 World Cup was immense. Lineker was incred in that tournament. Maradonna was breathtaking and won the cup single handedly for Argentina.
90 was all about Gascoigne. I still miss not having Gazza in the England side today. Michael Carrick isn't a like for like replacement imo :(. Best team: I remember standing on the pop side at the baseball ground when Liverpool used to come and play Derby. Rush, Barnes, Hansen, Beardsley, Mcmahon, Whelan, Nicol etc etc. We simply couldn't get the ball off them. So all the Derby fans just started cheering for Liverpool instead. Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: MANTIS01 on September 15, 2012, 10:08:51 AM Also watched Kinkladze play many times, Derby signed him at one point. Dude was immense for about 15 minutes per game.
Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: scotty2hatty on September 15, 2012, 10:18:23 AM Mentioned in the TfT thread last night that Julian Speroni is probably my favourite ever player. Also enjoyed Caniggia's cameo at Dundee. So many heros for me at Dundee growing up. Sara, Caballero, Nemsadze, Beto, Artero......
Turns out Kinkladze was only the 2nd best Georgian. Step forward Georgi Nemsadze... #Invalid YouTube Link# EDIT: No idea what is wrong with the link, nvm. Still brought some excitement to the club, and although that period almost killed the club financially I wouldn't swap it for anything. Loved taking my younger brother to watch the games. Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: TightEnd on September 15, 2012, 10:36:20 AM It was a crappy October night, and a crappy League Cup draw
I rushed to Cleethorpes, always a sod of a trip I sat in the away end, the wind whipping off the sea to my right I saw the best Leicester goal I ever saw live, from a tremendous player YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6OHXjh2CLk Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: Longy on September 15, 2012, 11:59:29 AM That Stojkovic vid is incred, amazing skills.
Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: horseplayer on September 15, 2012, 12:38:46 PM i was lucky enough to see him three times "live" in japan playing towards the end (were he now manages)
you quite often hear the phrase a player is playing above his league never has this been the case more. One thing that was apparent was that he never berated or shouted at lesser players infact ingame he often had time to coach them on the pitch not surprised he is now a manager if he was about these days he would be a world star no doubt Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: vegaslover on September 15, 2012, 12:40:43 PM First main memories are from 1986. Ian Rush in the cup final then Lineker in then WC
Remember Liverpool doing Forest 5-0 in the league a few days after a cup semi against them. Forest couldn't get near Liverpool and the Forest keeper had a great game, let in five but saved shedloads Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: mondatoo on September 15, 2012, 12:45:08 PM And the crowd goes wild, BOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10xdsZF_M6c Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: MintTrav on September 15, 2012, 01:19:55 PM I saw Pele play live.
It was just before his first retirement. Carlos Alberto, Clodoaldo and Joel had also been on the 1970 Brazil team. One thing about games in those days - no expense was spared to ensure the crowd had easy access to refreshments. Entire series is on youtube uploaded by the same guy iirc.
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzIeFJlyJok Growing up I was a Liverpool fan. I played left-wing as did John Barnes (my fav player) however I also used to pretend to be Kevin Sheedy in the playground. Cracking left foot. YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgmYg5nsN_s Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: superwomble on September 15, 2012, 11:33:40 PM For me, it's the Crazy Gang - Wimbledon FC - Fash, Vinny, Wise, Beasant, Sanch. Storming from non-league up to the very top then beating the mighty Liverpool in the 1988 FA Cup Final to stop them doing the Double. Those were the days...
Now we're getting stuffed by the likes of Burton Albion. Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: Nakor on September 15, 2012, 11:52:25 PM YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_RgB_lce8o
I was lucky enough to have a season ticket for the end of Wrighty and through the Bergkamp years but those early trips with my Dad to see Rocky were amazing. My playground hero. Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: Karabiner on September 16, 2012, 12:35:13 AM Look At That!

Philllllllllipe ALBERTTTTTTTTTTTT Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: Eck on September 16, 2012, 02:18:04 AM Still think Kenny is the best we (probably anyone) have ever produced but this guy who sadly passed away far too quickly was really special. I am too young to mention Baxter who my old man keeps telling me took the piss out of the World champions.

Philllllllllipe ALBERTTTTTTTTTTTT Haha, quality. This game>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Spurs game. On the otherside of it, these two were the worst: Cried like a baby and sulked for a good while after this, we absolutely hammered them and they seemed to only have that one chance, Schmeichel at his best, was abs devd YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWI5iP6pdXc After this one we knew we'd blow the title pretty much, so glad I was only young so it didn't hurt as much as it would if it happened now. YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7zE5ZwhJD4 Disgracefully, obv, Fenton got a lot of shit after this, his parents windows got put out I heard as well as assorted other bs, way ott. I actually never knew until now when I just read it that Shearer set them both up, fuck that guy, always said he was a massive douche. Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: Sheriff Fatman on September 16, 2012, 09:51:54 AM The Brazil team in the 82 World Cup were magical to watch as a 7 year-old. You'll notice that none of the players featured are defenders, which is why we don't talk about the World Cup winning Brazil team of 82, but this isn't a bad little montage of goals from a single tournament!
Eder's goal vs USSR is one of my all time favourites. I remember we all wanted to be Zico when we played in the park. Title: Re: Football Nostalgia Post by: craigbetts on September 21, 2012, 05:09:26 PM I always remember this goal as a kid growing up...
YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XysTzt--ik the run up is the business as a kid, just massive, i remember trying to recreate long run ups and taking penalties with run ups (sprints) from the half way line and being cream crackered when you get to the ball. For me the trajectory of Johny Metgod's goal is what i most remember, the ball appears to rise after staying low and flattish till the peno spot. |
