Title: RSQ - Will the sweet man leave a sour taste?
Post by: Sweetman on September 28, 2012, 12:18:59 PM
Okay guys, here is your RSQ.

Haven't been able to spend as long as I wanted thinking of some really awesome questions, hopefully the following will suffice.

Rules:

The score for each question is the number of people who give that answer.

The most popular answer is the sheep.

Incorrect answers receive the sheep score plus 5 points.

Lowest score wins.

Using Google is not allowed.

You must pass two questions and will receive 0 points for those two questions.

PM your answers to me by 10am Tues 2nd October. The reveal will take place at 6pm the same day (let me know if this is too early and I can push it a bit later)

There are fifteen questions in total:

1) Name a current Premier league football manager.

2) A TV comedy series starring both Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer.

3) A root vegetable

4) An ingredient in Hollandaise Sauce.

5) A country that shares a border with Luxembourg.

6) A species of penguin.

7) A poker player with two thirds of a triple crown (ie has won exactly two of the three main accolades in torunament poker, WPT title, WSOP bracelet, EPT title).

8 ) A Baseball team that has won the World Series in the past 50 years (1962-present).

9) A county that borders Staffordshire.

10) A species of bear.

11) A James Bond film.

12) One of the states of the USA ending with the letter "A".

13) A top 40 hit by "ABBA".

14) The name of someone who made the final table of either the 2007 or 2008 WSOP Main Event Final Table (official final table only, i.e. only 18 correct answers).

15) Picture round: Choose a type of facial hair from the following list:

Oh, and there is more than one question I can't answer (or can only give one answer to) - so for that reason, I'm out.

I didnt know the number of questions was not fixed.

I just copied Mint's template from the last RSQ as its the only one Ive ever seen.

Sorry mate.

That's like following the England football team on how to take penalties or the GB 4x100m on how to do baton relays...

You can do 15 questions - that's not a problem really.  Just that with one pass, and some questions that are a bit 'niche' you then alienate people who can't give an answer or more than one answer.  The ideal questions are ones with a good 10 or so answers, and some that are possible clever aces, but could also be a bit risky and be marked as fails.

Here are some RSQs from the past that I think have decent questions (obviously some of mine :D):

I have increased the number of passes to 2.

This should help on the questions that some may find too niche, to be fair though, the level of niche-ness is totally subjective, it'd be virtually impossible to put 15 questions that everyone would have an excellent grasp of.  there were 3 questions in the portsmouth RSQ that I literally only had one answer for.

I've tried to pick questions that aren't gonna take hours to debate, that have definitive answers to them.

It's easy to have 10 questions that don't include any 'niche' ones.

1. Name a fruit
2. Name an animal with 4 legs
3. Name a Premiership Football team outside the M25
4. Name a James Bond Film (as you have in your questions)
5. Name an X-factor winner

etc...

Oh, and there is more than one question I can't answer

Me too, haven't a clue on the Prodigy or football manager ones, and not sure on one or two others.

3) The name of a service station on the M6 motorway.

I had a browse through a couple of old quizzes last week and this very question caused ructions before. Good start Sweetman.

If your going to allow all this input, Sweetman, can I insist you only put up questions to which I am the only person who knows the correct answers? ;D I'll even write my own and pm them to you if you like!

Questions altered.

Thanks Sweetie, much obliged.

The only football managers I know, though, are Don Revie and Brian Clough. Oh, and Bill Shankley. And Matt Busby.

If you could just tweak the questions again so that it is a football manager ever, that'd be great. Thanks again.

what do you mean pass two? You may as well set 25 questions and pass 13.
Has anyone actually sent any answers in yet. Sort of regretting not waiting for Kinboshi's quiz now.

Putting it another way, it doesn't matter what you put down. Right or wrong, someone will object and it'll be excluded.

People put perfectly clever answers like TINF as a type of oil used in cooking and they kick it out.

i am with you there brother. But you got to accept that people don't always understand genius and have to carry on regardless. Poor old tightend has had his celebratory 10th RSQ win questions written and ready for months. It was great keeping him off his tenth win but I do feel Laxie went a bit far two weeks ago. I can't see Tighty playing ever again

He's been busy with stuff lately, but surely he's not seriously banned himself from the RSQ.  That would just be silly.  Besides, this is the perfect one for his return.  None of the rest of us have a fecking clue what answers to give.   rotflmfao

I can't enter. The questions are far too specialist imo. Let's bring back the old question by question review:

1) Name a current Premier league football manager.

Fine.

2) A TV comedy series starring both Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer.

Sounds like it should be fine. I've heard of them but never watched any of their stuff and I think slightly before my time so no idea.

3) A root vegetable

Fine.

4) An ingredient in Hollandaise Sauce.

Fine.

5) A country that shares a border with Luxembourg.

Fine. Although if I'm right I think it's a very limited answer set. Not necessarily a problem. Strategical passing ftw.

6) A species of penguin.

WTF. This can't be common knowledge? I've got no idea. None whatsoever. Just had a look on wikipedia to see if I was being dense but nope, never heard of any of them.

7) A poker player with two thirds of a triple crown (ie has won exactly two of the three main accolades in torunament poker, WPT title, WSOP bracelet, EPT title).

I know this is a poker site but that's far too niche. I can think of 1. Anyone else would be a guess.

8 ) A Baseball team that has won the World Series in the past 50 years (1962-present).

I'd be guessing here. I can think of quite a few baseball teams but whether they've won or not is another matter. Presumably most of them have hence i've heard of them but still...

9) A county that borders Staffordshire.

Not fine. We've already had one geography question. And whilst I have a rough idea of where Staffordshire is I don't have a county map imprinted on my brain. Countries is a bit fairer for this as people are more familiar with the world map.

10) A species of bear.

Fine.

11) A James Bond film.

Fine. Farce potential too which is good.

12) One of the states of the USA ending with the letter "A".

Fine.

13) A top 40 hit by "ABBA".

Fine.

14) The name of someone who made the final table of either the 2007 or 2008 WSOP Main Event Final Table (official final table only, i.e. only 18 correct answers).

Not fine. Again, we've already had a poker question. But unless you follow the world series then there's no reason you should know this. I think there was 1 certain high profile player but it's a bit of a guess that it was those years and not 09 or 10.

15) Picture round: Choose a type of facial hair from the following list:

Fine.

So i'd say strip questions 6/7/9/14 and you've got a more manageable 11 question quiz where people can be confident about entering. Question 2 i'm not sure about, but for others Question 8 will be a struggle. Keep the 2 passes though and it's fine :)

Why would that be fine? There's already a football quiz on Blonde for the footballphiles. I only know the two most famous ones and the one who's always in trouble. And there's an Italian whose name might come to me. Choice of 3.

Far too niche.

I can just about, but Ben, from Stoke, makes the mistake of assuming that everyone is knowledgeable about things local  to him like Staffordshire, the M6

The two poker questions are very tough.

Ben's a good lad though. Unlike that MintTrav QM, who would not spot an Immortal Jellyfish if it swam alongside him and said boo.

Giving something a name doesn't make it so. A slow worm isn't slow. Or a worm. Anteaters don't eat ants. Immortal Jellyfish aren't made of jelly, they're not fish and, most of all, they ain't ifeckingmortal.

Nah, that's fine. At the end of the day certain topics just aren't your thing. But as long as the question is general enough people can give an answer then it's ok. So as you say, there's 3 you can choose from, or pass. If the question was say "Name someone who has managed Charlton in the last 20 years" then by all means complain.

Given the grief that Sweetman's taking already, it was probably a wise decision to disallow it, MintTrav, so thanks :)

No chance, I know that one. In fact, I can think of two, both with the same first name. Is that going to be one of the questions?

This is bollocks.

Basically people aren't happy because they don't know the answers.

Can't believe I'm being criticised for having two poker questions in a quiz on a poker forum.

The questions arent being changed again. Because no matter what I do. Someone will pop up and say
"I don't know the answer to question 3. Can you change it to something I know the answer to"

You're all in the same boat people. Use your passes wisely.

Quiz is fine. Harder than the last couple but fine.

Probably less likely that I'll be trying to find clever wordplay answers (I reckon Eritrea for Name a country that is in Central America would have caused a riot) so that could be considered a good thing for those who want to finish the same day as the reveal starts.

I did check this when I saw it as an answer. The reboot was written by Charlie Higson and was more comedic. It is listed as a comedy, apparently.

TBF Reeves and Mortimer either produce genius or awful. Granted, much more the former than the latter.

Totally fluked this cos saw a guy on WSOP 2011 the other day wearing a Giants shirt, and they said they won the World Series the year before.

I literally only know anything about NFL (which I'm pretty strong on). The other 3 of the Big 4, I am oblivious.

Totally fluked this cos saw a guy on WSOP 2011 the other day wearing a Giants shirt, and they said they won the World Series the year before.

I literally only know anything about NFL (which I'm pretty strong on). The other 3 of the Big 4, I am oblivious.

Can name some teams, but as for understanding the sports..... nope

Follow NFL more than the others but used to be a decent follower of MLB at uni, as there were a few huge fans there. One had all the Marlins games on and another was friends with the daughter of the owner of the Yankees, if that makes sense.

Watch a bit of NBA but can't get into ice hockey one bit. Met an avid Rangers fan in Vegas and made him quite annoyed when I told him it's barely a sport. He was less happy when I said having a bloke whose only job it is to fight others implies that the others are a bunch of girls. I then showed him the clip of Chris Ashton taking that hit from Manu Tuilagi.

True story

MLB is just rounders for boys. NHL is ridiculous, though there have been a few footballers with the pure job of fighting others.

Vinnie Jones anyone?

how can you fail chocolate penguin tikay and teddy bear?

chocolate may be a "type" of penguin, but it is not a "species", the same applies for teddy is a "type" of bear not a "species"

As far as I'm aware tikay AKA Tony Kendall has not won a WSOP bracelet, EPT or WPT title.

I was present at the last reveal, and thus made sure my questions were as watertight as can be, hence the use of the word "species"
Still struggling to see how you thought Tikay had 2/3 of a triple crown.

On account of it not being a bear, you mean? Did Tal say Giant Panda? If he just said Panda, that is wrong, cos it isn't specific enough, as he has demonstrated himself.

Meanwhile, feckin Waterloo, Fernando, Money Money Money & Voulez Vous all get Aces. Crazy game.

Use your passes wisely.

tighty - I live in Stone ;)

Missed this reveal, obviously - but thought I'd highlight a key point that MintTravesty sort of missed and has since been magnified by the subsequent QMs.

This isn't a standard quiz, where you're rewarded for knowing more answers than other people taking part.

It's a RSQ. The idea is that EVERYONE can provide an answer to EVERY question. The skill is providing a correct answer that others don't. Questions should have at least 10 correct answers (sometimes it can be fewer, but let's use 10 as a guide). Some clever answers will be aces, some will be fails - that's where the gamble comes in. Then there's the aspect of trying to second-guess the other players and what you think they'll answer.

The RSQ isn't meant to be a quiz with ANY questions that people can't answer.  These might well be poker-related questions. You didn't ask people to name a card in a standard deck, or the name of a seat at the table (which everyone on here could answer), instead you assumed that people actually follow live poker as much as you do, and as you're probably aware now, that isn't the case.

In all fairness Kin I thought the idea of the RSQ quiz was ACTUALLY setting the questions when you have been the previous WINNER!! to my knowledge YOU won TWO quizes and then FAILED  ;)

Kin - which question(s) do you think people would struggle to provide an answer to? I just went back over my quiz and I cannot see a single question that anyone could not provide an answer for, with the possible exception of naming a character in the Bash Street Kids, and then only if they did not grow up in this country.

1, 2, 9 & 14 were a problem for me.  Might have come up with answers if I'd thought long and hard about them, but doubt they'd have been correct.

They were definitely more difficult than usual and this provides a big incentive for people to just google questions that they can't think of an answer for because the scoring system kills you for an incorrect answer.

Personally I quite like the tough questions cos it gives everyone a chance to learn some interesting stuff but really the game should be about how good you are at identifying what others would answer rather than finding a correct answer yourself. When there are only a few possible answers, people have a big incentive to google rather than give the only answer that they can think of which seems a lock to be the sheep answer.
