Thanks Alex - and for all the other nice comments. It was fun yesterday, was a yo yo day and played a couple of interesting hands....owned by Jamie who 5 bet  9c 3c pre and the 4 bet a  Ac 2h  7d board when we were 130bb deep - one of those moments you just have to smile and say vwp as I mucked  Qs Qh

Good thing about today is its spin up time so I can just enjoy; and also it's a good bunch at final. Was good to meet Mitch properly; quote of day - a guy asks him if he a wants the purple starburst, he opens his mouth like a hungry hippo and said "any colour". Tim  is just a legend who I'll be rooting so hard for, one of the good guys and a lovely man. I enjoyed playing with Jamie, who made a great gesture and showed me his hand when I made a big ish pass last level of the day.  Chip leader seems a nice guy, Mark is cool and I actually really like Luke when I didn't expect to; very funny guy and I like his humour and he's pretty entertaining; was on the wrong end of it once, I  deserved ridiculing, received obligatory abuse but we laughed about it at end of the day.

Alex,i know you are new to being a bookmaker, but i make those prices roughly 94%,and you havn't quoted three of the players! two of these are the chip leaders and Mitch who we know has a great chance (can understand you not wanting to quote, but he still has a price percentage)
Using you prices as a template ive gone
9/4 dean swift
3/1 hills
5/1 mitch
so whole field gives a 165% book.
if your previous 'books' have been to these percentages you do indeed run bad to be losing 3/3.

why wouldn't you offer odds on Swift and Hills, two of the top three stacks?

Not sure offering yourself groundskinners on two of the most likely winners is going to produce you that much business...

Thanks mate, I was advised to do it 130% for this sort of thing, which is what my spreadsheet is programmed to do for me, and then I increase or decrease it based on my opinion of the players chances of winning (hence why I don't offer odds on people I've never seen play or heard of). I think the prices may be worse than 130% because I don't wanna get burned again, so I've made them a little shorter, but also because I've offered odds on the best players left in, so each one as been adjusted for having a skill edge.

Appreciate the advice though mate, will still to 130% next time and just hope to run better.

£50 on chinamug for a punt. If his posts are anything to go by, he doesn't know what a playing card looks like but would definitely start yelling at it anyway, but nothing would be sweeter than taking Alex for a bag.

£50 on Jamie for insurance.

... which at the quoted books is extremely bad luck.  However, run that book every week for a year and you would clean house.  Either price up the lot or none at all.  If you do the math correctly, it won't matter who wins, you will make a profit so the reverse sweat nonsense doesn't apply.  Even bookmakers that own horses/ dogs take bets on their own animals.

All or nothing.

Peace.

That's assuming everyone sells out. Agree with your general point though, thanks for the advice.

The bolded bits just simply aren't true. Whilst Alex has a theoretical +ve expectation to suggest that getting stung 2/2 is "extremely bad luck" is a long way from being accurate.

The second bolded part is only true if Alex manages to run a completely balanced book, which is unlikely for any number of reasons.

Whilst I would agree the book he is betting to here has too much fat (it was me that advised Alex to bet to 130% generally), the service takes a reasonable amount of admin effort to run, produces a degree of volatility for Alex himself and, perhaps crucially, is currently without a competitor.

If anyone wishes to bet more competitively than him I'm sure they will quickly nick his business, though I am yet to see anyone step up to do this....

This would all be true and I would agree 100% if this was anywhere near to a 100% book.  If the other three were priced and were 2/1 combined which is what they would need to be in order make this book 130% then they would be a triple max bet.  In reality it is more like a 160% book.

i think betting to a 30% margin is ok in these speciality markets, but i would dispute that it takes much effort on the admin side.
Its a good idea to lay all the runners for 1k, a bigger bet than most of the high street bookmakers take but as he only lays the bet once i dont think Alex would be particularly worried about the swings.
ive no problem either way, just think he'll do more business with better prices, but heh if people bet into 160% books then carry on.

good luck to mitch and tim blake btw as ive shared tables with both.

To be totally fair I think the prices were very, very good today.  You clearly made a couple of mistakes in your first few books (more so the first one than the second) but you have clearly learnt from it.  Can't see you doing much going forward without significant run bad although you probably won't write much action either as the posters here are for the most part pretty sharp.
