Title: Something I'm Doing For Charity
Post by: zerofive on November 26, 2012, 01:35:01 PM
Before I get too attached to my hair.

http://www.justgiving.com/SeanBelton

Shooting for a grand. Might have set the bar a little low, but you don't have to stop giving once we get there!

I've ditched the smokes, which feels like it's killing me but of course the theory is it's doing the opposite. And I'm shaving off my giant haircut (pics to come) in honour of those I know/have known/visit occasionally at the cemetery who went through the horrifying experience that is chemotherapy.

Updates to come.

Thanks for your time and generosity Blonde. :)

Thank you Daniel for your generous contribution!

Where are the rest of you?! I know you all have a little you can flick in for a great cause, and anyone that I've ever played poker with will have a ton of cash lying around somewhere!

48 hours and I've generated £20. Granted that's more than I make in 48 hours of poker, but it's still rubbish.

Where's the love?

Start posting on a daily basis about your smoking, or lack of it, and how difficult/easy it is.

Do the sell!

Where's the love?

Where's the effort?

You know people have to work to make the money that you want them to send your way?

Can't see any reason to love this whatsoever.

You might get a few people who know you to donate on the basis of this thread but if you're after randoms you need to put more in to it.

I know it's a good cause but so are all the others. As Dan says, do the sell.

Could do a daily video blog - 20 seconds or so talking about how tough it is to give up smoking, or shit like that?

So far you've got two people who've sponsored you - and both know you relatively well (more than most on here).

So basically my blood is itchy, I'm very irritable, and the cravings haven't gone away or barely eased up. But a couple of things I have noticed: first of all I can do cardio exercise without a choking sensation as my heartrate increases, but I can't lift nearly as much as I feel I'm supposed to. I feel like I have harboured enough frustration to crack the ground if I hit it, but in reality I can't even bench what I was benching a few weeks back (which is a massive frustration where it didn't used to be.)

Fortunately I have the gift of foresight, so I know when these cravings finally clear off I will be a happier, healthier human being and the knowledge that I'm incorporating it into something I'm doing for a very worthy cause is just about the only reason I haven't reached for the smokes again. November has been very trying. Let's see if I can see it out to 2013 without hurting myself!

It's been about six weeks since I've had a cigarette, but even as a smoker I could quite happily go for about a week without one so it's hard to gauge exactly how long I can officially consider myself a non-smoker. I'll call it a month, but here's the kicker. For the first month you expect the cravings, you expect the irritability, so you put a lot of emotional stock into keeping your mood stable (yes, that bit on my diary about anger-wanking should be considered stability compared to what I felt like doing without huge amounts of personal restraint.) After the first month - speaking for myself of course, not everybody - I've found the restraint and stability to be wearing thin, running out. I know some people that quit smoking and were fine after two weeks, but I've observed forum discussions where people say they still feel the cravings months later. I'm buckled up for a bumpy ride!

Everyday I'm rattling.

Eating. Eating is something I hadn't really thought about much prior to quitting smoking. However, eating is something you don't really ever _stop_ thinking about straight after you quit. Whenever I get a nicotine craving, my brain just tells me to fill the void with calories instead.

Despite the fact that I'm literally huge around the midsection and it seems it would take a team of expert explorers several weeks to find my rectus abdominis, it turns out that I am in fact a fitness enthusiast. It's even more difficult to reach fitness goals when your brain won't stop suggesting cookies.

Fortunately, this has given me an opportunity to really look at my diet and really take watch what goes into my body. In turn, that has awoken my passion for cooking. Fortified banoffee flapjack and my own secret recipe risotto are just two of many that I've managed to put together in just one month. Fewer cigarettes, more passion, MORE ENTHUSIASM.

Are you bald yet?

Not bald yet! I had perhaps overestimated the success of this charity run. I didn't think it would be so difficult to rally a handful of people into donating a handful of cash! So where I was going to get the razor out when we reached a grand, I suppose I'd better set that bar a little lower! Still want a thousand though, people!!

It's easy to raise £1k for a good cause. Just flick in a fiver! Here are a few things £5 can get you:

 - Tip for your barber
 - A big blind, a straddle, or a single raise in a game of poker at your local casino
 - Carton of 10 cigarettes
 - One beer and one packet of nuts at the bar
 - Large Big Mac meal
 - Helping find a cure for cancer

Thanks for reading and thanks for donating to this excellent cause.

Well, he did half of what I suggested, was just reminding him to do the other half.  Then he might get a few more sponsors...

We've hit a roadblock guys!

While you're out spending hundreds on gifts for pagan holidays, why don't you take a second to stop by at www.justgiving.com/seanbelton and put away £5 or £10 for a great cause. Not only is cancer a horrible illness, but my hair is getting out of control and unmanageable.

Wouldn't it be satisfying to get rid of allllllll this?!

I thought so too! Head on over to www.justgiving.com/seanbelton and donate a little of your spare change. Thank you. :)

16% of the way there, thanks to generous donations from Eso Kral (who even included the rubdown), James Keys, and a staff member of Dusk Till Dawn.

Thanks guys, keep it coming. :)

So here's an interesting revelation. Those that know me will probably have heard this story and those that don't will probably fall asleep before they get to the end; so my suggestion is to rofl that big "donate" button and spare £5 or £10 or whatever you have knocking around.

When I was a kid, approaching my 18th birthday, I was careless enough to take a course of decongestants while on anti-depressants. The result was what I can only describe as a near-death experience. When I closed my eyes I saw images more vivid than real life, moving so quickly it was impossible to interject a thought. Very strange experience, and one that has brought about some pretty strange disorders such as anxiety and OCD, and the occasional flashback.

What does any of this have to do with smoking and having a very bald head? Well, whenever I felt any of these conditions was beginning to overwhelm me, an almost fail-safe strategy was to grab a cigarette (I'm sure a glass of bourbon would do the trick as well, but unfortunately one of my "symptoms" is an intolerance to intoxicants. It seems even debilitating psychological disorders appreciate irony.)

Last week I couldn't sleep for heart palpitations, and I knew one night it was going to get the better of me, and a full-on episode was imminent. As daft as it seems, even though reaching for one cigarette to quell a much larger issue was probably deemed "acceptable," it felt like not only would it be a backwards step in something I've worked very hard to achieve - smoke-free for 2 months - but I'd be letting everyone that donated to this magnificent cause down.

So that night of anguish was for you guys, and for anyone who wants to donate. Thanks for reading and thank you for your generosity. Let's get better!
