Title: Too Fat to Fly?
Post by: kinboshi on November 27, 2012, 12:46:05 PM
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/26/vilma-soltesz-obese-425-pounds-dies-too-fat-to-fly_n_2193161.html

The story is missing the detail of how she got over there in the first place (why couldn't she just fly back with the same airline on the same plane?), but it's not a good story for all concerned.

Her husband is thinking of suing the airlines: "Very rarely do you have discrimination causing much more than humiliation and psychological damages, but in this instance, the discriminatory actions of the airlines led to something much more serious." (http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/jumbo_jet_suit_JNSa3bibMYDDqVOmJrs9dK)

Is it discrimination or just pragmatism by the airlines?

Yikes obv i'm fat but i'm not quite at the stage of asking for the pregnancy belt extension and can still fit in one normal cattle seat. I saw a guy once get on the plane in the states, abso MASSIVE, I was 100% certain that there was zero chance he could fit in a normal seat, as he walked on I watched him and he sat slap bang in the middle of 2 seats. Hoping he had to pay for both of them.

In this case I believe common sense was used by the airline, she shouldn't have been allowed to fly in the first place.

If people get into that sort of state they should pay for 2 seats imo. If nothing else its totally unfair on those sat around them.

Guessing she flew there (yes, I asked the same question), and she died because of the lack of medical attention - although she did turn down medical help in Hungary.

Parcels get charged by weight to get delivered by air - don't see why people should be any different.

Also, oversized luggage has to go in the hold...

Wow, some 'interesting' views being expressed on here already, and by some people I don't generally consider to be intolerant.

I guess it proves that it's wrong to discriminate against anything these days, unless of course it's obesity because that's the individuals' fault.

Guess I'd better stop playing live now then.

But in all seriousness, if you have an extremely overweight person on a full flight, why should the people sat next to them suffer discomfort on a long flight?

A cousin of mine had to buy 2 seats on a flight, when he got on the plane the seats were split by the aisle.

Total pisstake.

Disagree totally, if they know they are that overweight to cause issues they need to buy 2 seats or go business or whatever. Making others uncomfortable is pretty selfish, then again that is probably why they are so fat in the first place.

Disclaimer, I'm a fat bastard too  ;D

An Aussie friend of mine is 6' 10" and a bit but not excessively overweight. He pretty much always goes biz even though he can't really afford it, he just goes on holiday less often and saves up.

I'm sure i read that fatism is the only socially accepted form of discrimination?

What about guys who are short? I don't mean dwarfs, just guys who are, say, 5' 0" - 5' 6". It seems to be very common to openly make fun of them. I'm sure I could find many such insults on this forum if I look for them. What makes it acceptable to call them names or attribute certain personality traits to them? If I was that height I would find it grossly insulting; I do anyway. I am always surprised when I see someone doing it and everyone just accepts it.

And while I'm here can I just tell tall guys that I am not interested in their height. They just love to drop it into conversations or on forums. "I'm 6' 4" and I have terrible trouble getting into cars / finding trousers / fitting into beds", or whatever the excuse is to tell you their height. Okay, it's just immaturity on their part, but it's pretty boring.

I'm 6' 4" so I bought a big car that's easy to get in to. Never had a problem with trousers and as long as you get a king sized bed it's all gravy.

Because of all the adjustments I've made it's been really difficult finding an excuse to tell people how tall I am so I'd like to thank you for finally giving me the opportunity.

I've always thought that tall people must get so tilted by people constantly asking how tall they are. It's the first thing people say often when they meet someone tall "wow how tall are you?". How weird is that? You'd never say "wow you're really fat" would you?

Haha.

Out here it's even funnier. One of my housemates is 6'4 and he never gets asked how tall he is but the Thais regularly ask him 'Why you sooooo tall?' which is awesome the way they say it and he still hasn't figured out how to give a good answer.

On a related note, if you want to recline your seat do you ask the person behind first or just do it?

I once had a guy go totally mental on me without warning, I didn't ask first. He made me sit bolt upright on a flight to the US.

Title: Re: Too Fat to Fly?
Post by: GreekStein on March 05, 2013, 05:00:09 PM
I was at a football game sat next to a huge fat guy and literally had no room at all to be at all comfortable - it totally hampered any enjoyment I may have taken from the game. At 50 quid a ticket I was pretty pissed off.

Unless that guy has a medical illness, in which case the stadium should facilitate him the same way they do with disabled customers then he should pay more for 2 seats or more depending on size.

For people saying that woman shouldn't have to pay more, would you be satisfied if you had to sit next to someone of her size? I'm 5'10 and less than 190lbs. I'm pretty sure that's fairly average and there's no way that woman wouldn't make my journey totally uncomfortable if I had to sit next to her.

I take my suitcase and have to pay a ridic rate for every kilo over 20 that it is, yet she shouldn't have to pay more when she is that size? I'm totally fine with it if the airline accommodates her because of a medical illness/condition but if people are just fat through lazyness and bad diet, then I'm a strong advocate they should pay more.

Does that make me ignorant or am I justified?

When me and Mitch flew to Vegas we booked extra legroom seats because, well, Mitch is a fkin absolutely massive little monson. The guy sat 2 to our right was somehow even bigger and spazzed out when the guy infront reclined his seat. Imo he was totally out of line. Everyone is well within their right to do that.

Yeah this for me too. Anyone reclines on me is getting an uncomfortable back for the duration of the flight that's for sure. They might even notice a persistent tapping against their head rest as well if they're really lucky.

If I was a midget I wouldn't mind but if someone reclines in front of me then I'm fucked!!

One of the good things about Ryanair is that you never have to worry about this problem.

What's the problem with tilting seats back? Sitting bolt up right for the whole flight is more tilting. Just tilt yours back if the person in front does it,you'll find the lost room reappears and you'll be comfier than sitting bolt upright.

not if you have legs
