I have an i-Pad, not sure what spec, but I have had it for nearly 2 years. It is NOT 3G enabled.

I have previously been able to get stuff like "SKY GO" without a problem, until two weeks ago.

I now get a Message saying, something like, "you need to upgrade to allow the latest features" bla bla bla.

When I try to install the latest App Update, I get this message.....

This app requires iOS 5.1

How do I get, or do that, please?

Im surprised your settings tab doesnt have a little "1" next to it telling you thta its time for an update of software.

If its an older i-pad, plug it in to your computer and do a standard backup and update, your laptop/PC should ask do you want to update software, say "yes" - give yourself and hour or 2!

When you say "plug it into my computer"......how, where, with what? It has no cables that I know of (I still have the original box, so they may be in there).

I assume you have a charger thatcame with it? The cable that leads into the plug head has a USB port on the end when you unplug it from the plug head.

Take that out, stick it into your PC with the other end attached to your I pad

ITunes on my PC? Highly unlikely, I would think, I never use ITunes. I think I had to sign up to it on my Ippy when I first got it, I can't remember why, but it was mandatory I think.

to be honest, it literally is it. You neednt even open I tunes, it will do it for you!

It is quite a slow process, so be patient with screens opening and things. You will need to stay with the process clicking various options, but when the i pad screen goes black, with a little silver updating bar on it, you could squueze in your afternoon nap at that point  ;)

just follow the instructions. You will need your iTunes account and password. This is what you type in to your ippy when you download an app.

Once you've done that plug the ippy to the pc and follow instructions.

I had assumed you have i tunes, as I thought you needed it to set up your ipad on day 1. Did you buy this new?

Every Apple product I own requires installation through I tunes to register it, log the serial number and generlly make it work.

The concern I have about telling you to "just download i-tunes" is that it might as you to "set up a new device", and then you have a solid chance of cocking everything up and loosing all the stuff on your i pad!

I tried to Download ITunes, as above, but I have a company Lappie, that has preset "Privilege Rights" & I do not have the Admin Rights to allow me to Download it.

I had to set up an ITunes account there & then, to make the Ippy work. I have never opened it since.

The nice man in the Apple Shop did it all for me when I first purchased the Ippy, as I recall.

It will work but if they have itunes already and devices connected to it it may cause them probs. Do you not own your own pc? I know a man who can get laptops at a great discount on new.

Yes, (see previous Post) the man in the Shop got me to sign up to ITunes, & that was it, I went home & started using it.

As it happens, I've never been able to use the e-mail functuion for some reason, it does not work, but I'm not fussed.  I have a Yahoo e-Mail Account I have had for 20 years or so, & that does not seem to work on the i-Pad - I can receive e-Mails, & see them, but I cannot reply to them.

You may be better off asking your IT dept if they will install iTunes for you. Some companies allow it.

If there's no responsible adult nearby, I'd just take it to the Apple Store and get them to sort it out.

The good thing is, when you update to the next operating software, the I Pad can then self update without a PC! So get this one out of the way and you are flying!

As far as the photo is concerned, get the Apple people to set up your email account properly, so that you can send e-mails, and just email anything you want to keep to yourself - et voila - a back up copy!

I have now downloaded i-tunes.

Could not see ANYWHERE to sign in, but could find "Reset Password", & that worked fine.

So, I have ITunes downloaded.

And I have a Password.

I then plugged the Ippy into the Computer, and.........

Apparentkly, as BobAlike said previously, I need to go to SETTINGS>GENERAL>SOFTWARE UPDATE.

My ippy does not have a "SOFTWARE UPDATE" tag though.

Because you have never upgraded previously I think my previous comment was rended useless. I'm trying to connect my ippy to my pc at the moment but it's taking a while to transfer purchases. Once done I'll try and guide you through the process via iTunes. That is unless you've already managed to figure out by then.

That first link you posted requires the "Software Update" button which I do not have.

The 2nd link seems to suggest my Version is too old to Update.

Ok, it looks like you'll be better off restoring it as a new ippy. This will mean that you lose everything on there though, photos, vids, apps.

Ok. Try and save the pics if you want to by navigating the ippy via windows explorer. Obv the ippy needs to be connected to the pc to do this.
When and if you have accomplished this you can then proceed to restore your ippy as a new ippy. Again this is assuming that you're happy to restore it as new.

Upload to photobucket or similar if needed. They might survive but you will have to download Skygo again.

Been to the Apple Shop today.

The Nice Man explained how to do it, it is dead easy, apparently.

I just have to open i-Tunes (no need to log in), connect ippy to lappie, click the thing on the left sidebar, job done.

Should be a doddle.

Nice Man seemed surprised it had never been Updated since new, but I explained that I looked after it well & it is low mileage.

Tony, when all this is over you should definitely plug your iPad into a PC at least once every few months so that you don't get too far behind on software updates.

If you're only updating by one or a few versions then its as easy as plugging it in and you can download and install the update in a single click. Jumping from years old software to the most recent version can be a minefield, especailly when one of the updates along the way has changed the way that the software updates are delivered!

My grandfather has a mobile phone with really big buttons and just the most basic functions. The ring is very loud so he can hear it and there is an emergency red button should he have a fall. Think you get a free parker pen just for enquiring if you're interested Tikay.

I-Tunes icon did not appear, but the Apple page said " thank you for downloading I-Tunes" so it must be there somewhere.

Found an Apple Support page, filled the form in, they are going to ring me.

PS - clicked something, and I-Tunes now appears to be being Downloaded properly. This may be the answer.

How does it do this?  Wouldn't you have to work out how to use your phone first?

I've got my 'phone sorted now. Even rung Mr Dempsey on it.

The previous charger had a USB plug on it. It was in my Lappie Case next to Ippy, which has a leather case with a magnetic flap to close it. The USB thing somehow stuck to the ippy cover magnetic flap & must have magnetized/de-magnetized the USB which stopped working.

So I borrowed the lady next door's charger.

It needs one, BADLY. Not sure I dare risk it though. Maria helped me to try updating my HTC previously, but I seem to have too many Contacts for it to cope, at the time I had 895 I think, so probs more than 1,000 now. She helped me Delete old Texts recently, too, I had 9,000 of them, sheesh.

My ippy is much better now, I even have a "Message" thing, like, I suppose, & "FaceTime". FaceTime is WEIRD. When we were kids, science-fiction said "one day you will be able to talk on the phone AND see the other person at the same time". Then came WebCams, & now Facetime.

Just wow.

Also, since the Update, the "Tabs" on Ippy are so much better, & easier to use.

1,000 contacts should be fine.

Having 9,000 texts saved on your phone is a bit daft though.  You can automatically have your texts saved to your gmail account - so even if you lose your phone you still have your old texts.  It also means you can safely delete old texts on your phone.

Sounds like your phone is as cluttered as your car...

A gmail account is where all your contacts should be backed up to automatically.  You are able to download apps from Google Play (used to be the Market)?  If so, you must have a gmail account.

Not that I am aware of, no, I'm not. I don't have anything backed up. Since the Software Update I have my own Cloud though. I know how Cloud works.

I have no idea (or interest) in "The Market" or "google Play".

tikay, I did set you up with a gmail account at a Sky Poker Tour event (other tours are available) but if I remember it didn't synch your contacts list with the gmail account.

I have "google Drive", & have to log into that daily to do my spreadsheet work. Would it be the same passy?

PS - You taught me how to tether my phone to my ippy, & I still do that at Heathrow Airport, when I am plane-spotting on FlightRadar24. Excellent, though it eats the phone battery.

Yes, your Google Drive and gmail accounts are one and the same.  The same account you 'log in' to your phone with when you set it up. The same one you use to download any apps, syncs your contacts, etc.

Log In to Google drive, then click gmail at the top, then on the top left you should see Gmail in red.  Click it and it should show Contacts.  If you select that it will show you all your phone contacts if synching somehow magically started workong.

I'd rather not have another e-Mail account, in truth. I have two already (my personal Yahoo one, & a work one), so do I now have to start & use another? To be fair, the Yahoo e-Mail is absolutely crap, but I've had it for so long, & I CBA to send everyone a new Addy.

You don't need to keep track of multiple accounts. You can use one and have the others forward to it.

Gmail integrates nicely into the android phones (which it should, obviously), and you can also make it more secure than your yahoo account.  Next time you're at DTD I'll take you through the benefits of using it when you have an android phone already.
