Title: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT
Post by: snoopy1239 on January 19, 2006, 12:34:39 PM
Howdy folks.

Jen and I have managed to find a nice spot in the press room. More importantly, it's nice and warm in here. I believe it's -7 degrees Celcius outside. Bloomin' freezing for a skinny chap like me. Give me sunny Brum any day of the week.

Anyhow, the comp is due to start at 3pm.

Blinds start at 25/50 with starting stacks of 10,000 and 60 minute levels.

As usual, this event was maxxed out pretty briskly. So even with the Laddies Cruise running simultaneously, there will be 300 players starting. I don't think that was ever really in doubt.

I've seen a few famous faces:

Joe Hachem
Chris Moneymaker
Pascal Perrault
Barney Boatman

I approached them for autographs but they didn't seem interested in taking mine.

Jen's just connected, so everything running smoothly...

... so far.

Yes, we're about to collect those free-drink-obtaining press passes and start to mingle with the players in advance of the tournament actually starting... So you've got an hour an a half before the action commences to get comfortable.

We are staying in a rather smaller, darker, colder hotel about 15 mins away, but the good news is we're moving here tomorrow and it's really very nice here indeed.  Spacious and cosy at the same time, with a pleasant press area and internet access (thank you Mr. Eric Jensen!)

A full list of who's playing today and who's playing tomorrow will appear as soon as we get it...

So far I only have a pic of Snoopy lounging in the lounge... but it will make it on in a minute.  We're flipping a coin to see who has to brave the sub-zero outside to get pics of the Casino, which is worth seeing.

Good luck Barney! He's in good form. Would love to see him pull out an EPT win.

Boy, I need to work of my photgraphy skills. Looks like I had shakey hand syndrome on that one shot of the cardroom. Thomas Kremser was present though. What a star!

Caught sight of Rob Hollink yesterday.

I believe Dave Colclough is located somewhere in the hotel. Rumour has it that he is entered into the competition, but will be in tomorrow's field.

and drum roll please.........

Sir Julian Thew of Yoyoness has entered the press room.

Go on, here's another one (nice, huh?)

They play until 3am each day - everything gaming-related looks to be pretty strictly overseen and the times they're allowed to operate are non negotiable.  So it looks like 12 hours of play (with the expected breaks) per day.

I spotted that too. Would be ace if it was.

I'm an avid Villa fan and we were battling with Liverpool at the top of the league when he was in his prime. Not sure which is more unbelievable; that Molby had a prime, or Villa were at the top of the league.

I'll find out as soon as I can.

Cheers Snoops, good to see we are concentrating on the important finer poker points of the tourney like whether a footballer is playing. I also remember Villa challenging for the title even more bizarrely my team (Norwich) were still in the title race at Easter for a couple seasons in the good old days. Jan actually spent a month on loan at Norwich, he sure could a pass a football, wonder if he is good at passing cards.

When I asked if they were likely to kick off on time, I was told, "this is Denmark!" so I reckon we might be starting any minute now.  Snoopy and I have divided our field and will be off getting descriptions (and pics) of players with whom we are not overly familiar.  And there are quite a few of those...

So don't worry, I'm eating well.

Players just taking their seats now.

We didn't quite make that 3pm start then.

Joe Hachem and Chris Moneymaker are casually chatting away. Just need to throw Raymer in there and we've got the full set.

I'm tempted to try and sit down somewhere and pretend I'm playing. I may get handcuffed and escorted out the building though, so I'm not going to risk it.

Well, they've officially shuffle upped and dealt now.

Whilst I was trying to find a descriptive way of identifying all the Scandinavians, I heard a familiar voice behind me. I turned round to see a Mr Gus Hansen searching for his seat.

After watching him play on countless occasions, it was strange and somewhat surreal to finally see him in person.

Jen and I are currently tying to jot down some descriptions of players so that when they move we can still identify them.

Quite tricky when most of the ones that we don't know are young, blonde, Scandinavian, and good looking.

I can confirm that we are in the presence of former footballer Jan Molby.

A couple of chip counts for you:

Julian 'Yoyo' Thew = 9725
Pham 'Bad Girl' Xuyem = 7825

There are plenty of lovely Scandinavian ladies in there. I may pop back in and try a bit of snoopys charm.

Although it's freezing outside, it's roasty toasty indoors. I may have to go skins, but they may work against me if Im gonna try my luck with some of the local talent.

OK that's most of them identified by hoody colour...

We're 15 minutes away from the first level's end (one whole hour has therefore nearly passed) and then we will commence our early Chip Count - the busiest of the day since as far as we know they're all still in.  I heard someone say they'd taken a bet with Barny Boatman over whether or not someone would be out in ten minutes.  I think he lost.

Surprise - glad to hear from you - Isabelle is playing, and at the moment there are just too many photographers hanging round her table!  Never fear, though, we'll get a pic up soon and counts too.

Seeing as we got an early count from Snoops for Bad Girl, here she is.  She looked rather intense, ipod in, no nonsense.  But eventually noticed me trying to get her attention and gave us a lovely smile.  She's on the same table as this Jan Molby guy...

I really like this pic - two Norsemen (Sverre and Edgar) and one Frenchman (Pascal) all in a row and all looking happy.  Team Norsemen have had a pretty good run already here from what I hear talking to Woody - lots of placings in the earlier No Limit and yesterday's Omaha.  No wonder they look so chilled out.

More chippy counts:

Ooh. Chippy. I'm making myself hungry. Cod and chips please. Yum.

Anyhow, back to the chip counts:

Julian = 9350
Bad Girl = 6950
Barney = 17000  :)up
Isabella Mercier = 7500
Jan Molby = 9400
Chris Moneymaker = Can't see his bloomin' stack. He's selfishly covering his chips with his hands. Do these players not think about the chip counters when they're playing for thousands?!  :D
Me = I've just trebled through. Then I woke up...

I think I forgot to mention that there was a little speech-filled moment before they started today's play where representatives of Casino Copenhagen told us that the prize pool was an impressive-sounding 8,000,000 Krone (still 1.1 million Euros) with 288 runners.  Thomas Kremser, the TD, took to the mic as well to tell us that they're following TDA rules etc. and then I got distracted because of Joseph Hachem's beard-type thing.  But that's a pretty good turnout (144 per day, obviously), with those who survive their day Ones playing down to just the final table on Saturday.

Title: Re: EPT COPENHAGEN - MAIN EVENT

144 started, we're now down to 141.

Rumour has it that Rob Hollink was the first OUT.

His seat is empty, the felt is chipless, and there is a small chunk of tumbleweed blowing by.

ps. there are some very attractive dealers er... dealing.

He had a horrific beat on a WPT final table recent, Kido Pham re-raised all-in with J10 on a pure steal vs Hachem's KK, and hit a JJx flop crippling him.

OK OK I've been out doing some actual work rather than just staring at the famous people - here come some just-pre-break chip counts (tables 1-10 - Snoopy bringing you the rest soon).  If a player is marked OUT, there's a slim chance they may just have been moved - but it all looks pretty staid still.

Good morning from Tunica, Mississippi! (It's 10:50 am here.)

I'll be busy reporting on the World Poker Tour event here at the Gold Strike Casino, but in between this action, I'll be checking out your coverage in Copenhagen (and sweating Isabelle).

Keep up the great work!

Good evening Tunica!

I seem to remember that area in January being a tad frosty too, but there are little clouds of snowflakes drifting past our large window right now.  Play is about to restart so I will go in search of Isabelle (my, my, so popular!) and some exciting hands to relate.

Joe Grech = 13.5k
Julian Thew = 19.5k

Gus Hansen is down to the felt with 3.1k.

He just flat called a 1000 preflop bet.

Flop comes  Jd 5h 8h

Gus watches his opponent's reaction as the flop is well... flopped.

Mateyboy bets out. Gus looks him up and down before folding.

Barney Boatman = 19k

You can have as many Boatman chip counts as you like. He always tells me how many he has.

Counting these chips can be a knightmare sometime, especially from afar. The white marks on the side of the yellow chips are very hard to distinguish.

I'm gonna have to have a word with Thomas.  8)

Chris Moneymaker is OUT.

He held KK on a flop with a king.

All the money goes in preflop.

Mateyboy has bottom trips with 6-6-6.

Can u feel it coming?

Turn was a blank.

Here it comes....

River was a

drum roll please...

!!!!  6c !!!!

EEK!

Moneymaker pushes his chair back angrily, but, after a few seconds calms down and utters those constantly used words, 'That's poker'.

Still, a hell of a beat. To come across set v set is pretty uncommon. To have one hit quads is even more of a rarity.

The blinds have just this moment gone up.

The chip leader is Dario Aliato with around 40k.

Josef Shechter is also runnin well with 29k.

Barney is still going strong with about 20k in chips. I just saw him bet 3.5k into a  5c 6c 5s flop with 4575 in the pot. After a long dwel, and perhaps some amateur dramtics, from Michael Pulsen, Barney eventually takes down the pot.

Other counts from the floor:

Joseph Shechter   25,000
Sverre Sundbo      6,325
Edgar Skjervold     21,500
Peter Eichhardt      6,700
Julian Thew         22,000 (I know I already said that one)
Birgitta Johanssen  10,000
Dario Alioto           33,000 (hoovering around the chip lead)
Gus Hansen            2,000

Take it that Dario Alioto is the cleaner then!!!

Great updates as ususal   :)up

Yes yes, well noticed... but he is hoovering the chips.  One of the more get-outtable typos, I believe :)

Ian Fraser = 16k

Thought Yoyo was out for a moment there, but he's just moved table. Phew...

Last time I spoke to Barney I told him that next time I came around, I expected him to have doubled up.

and by George, on my return trip to his table, he was sitting there with 35k.

Maybe I'm a lucky charm!

Counting these chips can be a knightmare sometime,

You mean the 80's kids gameshow?

Seriously though, keep it up Jen and Snoops, this is great stuff.

There is nothing, I repeat, nothing wrong with that iconic kids' television show.  I even applied to go on it but my schoolmates weren't too impressed.  Their loss.

Just for you Jen. 8)

Kids to their Dungeoneer: "Side step to your right...no your other right"

A little more about Julian, perhaps?

Like, how he got all those chips before doing them?

Hand 1 - he limped with  6c 7c along with a few others, and called a habitual raiser only to find a  3h 4c 5d flop come down!  He reckons the other guy had a big pair as he called him down every street before mucking on the end.

Hand 2 - Against Isabelle - making the nut straight against her second nuts got the chips in the middle.

Now having lost a 10k pot he's back down to 17k but that's more than reasonable.

The Scottish challenge has just arrived at the casino to take vengeance for Viking raids on our shores a couple of millenia ago.  (We bear a grudge for a while)

The hotel has free internet access which will ease the pain of the likely £50 a pint.

Gus was being interviewed by the Danish media. I crept up behind the cameraman and managed to pick up a few comments.

Apparantly, he held  Kd Td and moved all-in.

He was called by  Kc Jd.

The flop came  Qc Th 3c.

Turn =  Kh

River =  Aspades

Mateyboy eliminates Gus with a straight.

Phew. Thank goodness my Danish was up to scratch.

Blinds are now 150/300. A very gradual rise.

There are 87 players left.

Pascal Perrualt = 10k
Barney Boatman = 25k
Bad Girl = 35k
Jan Molby = 14k
Julian Thew - 18k

I told Barney that I expected him to have doubled up by the time I retured. It worked last time, a second occurance would be freaky. I'd officially be his lucky mascot then.

Jan Molby's chips are like Liverpool next season -- going down

ok poetic license - but it is possible to pay £10 for a bottle of beer - last year a chap from edinburgh (on my round) asked for a bottle of "Christmas ale" - I should have realised something was up when the barman asked how many glasses I wanted with it....

Hi Tikay!

Not only does Snoopy appear to be enjoying it - he's also clearly an adept, right from the start.  Much more energy than me.

I have some information - your chip leader at present is Xuyen 'Bad Girl' Pham with 80,000!

I asked her how many she had exactly and she just kind of waved her arms around in front of the mountain of chips and said, "I don't know."  So that's an estimate.

64 players remaining.
300/600 blinds. 75 ante.
22k = Average Stack

Yoyo = 36k

Jan Molby = 15k

Bad Girl = Mount Everest

Barney Boatman has been moved to Bad Girl's left, and his stack is looking decidedly less healthy than hers - around 16k.  Barny just lost another 1,600 on a  Aspades 4s Qc flop, which he passed to a check-raise.

Elsewhere, Karin Lundgren is hovering around 30k, and every time I pass her table she seems to be winning another smallish pot, this last time off Ingemar Backman.

It's Edgar Skjervold's turn to be massaged now; he's on about 33,000, and one of the few players I think is still in their original seat...

Is there a bit of a subliminal message in there eh Baron?

Just before Julian yo-yo'd back up, there was a bit of an endearing "I want my lucky scarf back from Xuyen" moment - but when he saw she was using it as a kind of comfy back pillow he relented and it looks like he didn't need it after all.

I was standing behind Yoyo's table waiting for him to knock them all out. I caught sight of under the gun's hole cards.  Ac Ks. My gut instinct was that there was some big action ahead.

Mateyboy rasied and was reraised by a Scandieboy in seat 7. Mateyboy calls for the rest of his chips. Scandieboy flips over  Qd Qh

Flop = 9d Ts 9h

At this point, mateyboy made the 'get on your coat' maneouvre. Bit early if you ask me.

Turn = 6h

Mateyboy rises from his seat, body angled towards the exit.

River = Kd

Mateyboy turns back to the table, removes his coat, and sits back down.

I'm sure the routine is good luck.

Cash games have sprung up behind another set of little ropes - featuring such players as Chris Moneymaker - his table is full and I reckon there's a waiting list... It's extraordinary how people want to take on these guys any time any place any game.  I would get a photo but not sure if that's allowed yet.  Snoopy's back with some tales so I guess it's my turn to go a-wandering.

Barney Boatman is OUT.

I didn't catch his swan song, but I know that he was very short stacked at the time.

Thomas Kremser has announced that play will finish at the end of the current level, level 90. This means that there are about 45 minutes remaing.

Blinds are 400 and 800 with 100 antes.

Bad Girl has taken a knock.

There was around 10k in the pot.

Board =  Kc Jd 9h 7d

Mateyboy in seat 7 checks.

Xuyem bets 5k.

Mateyboy moves all-in.

Xuyem dwells longer than the dwelliest of dwellers.

Mateyboy calls time on Xuyem.

Kremser trots over to announce that she has 1 minute to come to a decision.

Xuyem reluctantly mucks.

Not too much damage though. She'll bounce back.

Perhaps I can start the rail singing, "Bad Girl, Bad Girl. Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when she comes for you?"

... then again, maybe that's not such a good idea.

51 players remaining and there are a couple of very low stacks like Brigitta Johanssen (who keeps making a move on her button with no callers) but they're still all going for it.

Julian lost a very large pot calling on the river on a board of:  Ac 9h Jd Qh Jc, at least 20k it looked like.  The other guy turned over  Ks Tc and Julian mucked...

tx again for all the support guys and gals,
a good day in the office,
great to see bad girl back on song...
i tried to keep the yoy-ing to a min,
but sitting on 70k couldn't resist calling a raise with 10h-8h,
all the chips went in on 4th street with a 5,J,9h,Qh,
hubbba, hubba, drool
but i ran into K-10 and missed the heart draw on the river.
anyways, still in, ashade under average for day 2 with 24k,
no problemo!
