Title: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: The Camel on April 10, 2013, 09:35:54 PM So I have finally given in to modern technology and decided to get a smartphone.
O2 have offered me a free upgrade to an Iphone 4 or a Samsung Galaxy Ace 2. With the iPhone I would get 250 minutes of free calls, free texting, free wifi and 1gb of internet usage for £32 per month With the Samsung unlimited free calls, free texts and 1gb of internet for £20 month. I will be using it to check football scores, tweet, check email, bet and that's about it. Also hopefully use it abroad. Which should I go for and why? Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: The Camel on April 10, 2013, 09:44:04 PM Is 1gb per month a lot or a little?
How much internet does clicking refresh on Betfair use? Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: EvilPie on April 10, 2013, 09:49:24 PM Everyone who has an iphone will say iphone and everyone who has the ace 2 will say the Samsung.
Personally I think you'll be happy with either as they're both brill. Obvious choice is the Samsung as it's cheaper. Ignore the free wifi bit with the iphone. That's the same for both phones. 1Gb is loads as long as you're not downloading stuff or watching bbc iplayer type things. I have 750MB and I never get near that just browsing, checking emails placing a few bets etc. Don't use it abroad unless you're connected to wifi. You'll cry when you get the bill. Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: Jon MW on April 10, 2013, 10:03:19 PM ... Obvious choice is the Samsung as it's cheaper. ... this, both of them do what you want so I'd have thought the unlimited calls with less cost would be a better option. Post by: kinboshi on April 10, 2013, 10:04:21 PM Doesn't O2 have a day-use thing for data when you're abroad (in Europe), which is about £5 a day?

Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: marcro on April 11, 2013, 10:52:53 AM The iPhone will probably be a bit easier for a luddite. If you go the iPhone route make sure they give you the iPhone 4S and not the older iPhone 4.

If you go the iPhone route make sure they give you the iPhone 4S and not the older iPhone 4. My Mum's got the Galaxy Ace 2 and hasn't got a clue what to do with smart phones, but it isn't really an issue. Maybe it could be a problem for other handsets, but it definitely isn't for that one. Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: DaveShoelace on April 11, 2013, 11:28:27 AM Both seem more than ideal. For sheer ease of use, especially if its your first one, I think the iPhone is a bit better if you don't mind the price difference.
This particular debate often gets as angry and polorised as the Thatcher debate. I know so many people who get really angry when other people choose the brand they don't. Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: Dubai on April 11, 2013, 11:32:08 AM Id get the iphone based purely on the likelyhood of you finding an emergency charger when your battery is low in pubs, restaurants, round friends etc. Cant overstate how important that turns out to be, most pubs in London will have 1 behind the bar or find one for you
Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: kinboshi on April 11, 2013, 11:33:34 AM Depends what you want from it Keith. If it's just browsing the web, checking your email, watching the odd video, arguing about Thatcher on here, and placing some bets - then either will be adequate.
It's only if you have specific needs that one might out-perform the other. In fact, I'm a big fan of android, but most people I see with android phones aren't getting half the functionality out of them and they could do just as well (if not better) with an iphone, as Bazza said, they're probably more intuitive for a luddite... Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: Laxie on April 11, 2013, 11:35:08 AM I only prefer android phones because they're more flexible and allow you to tweak and fiddle with them.
Basically, if you struggle with technology at all, then iphone is probably the better option for you. Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? If you are browsing the interweb a lot, the battery will get used up quite fast Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: edgascoigne on April 11, 2013, 11:38:32 AM If you go the Samsung Galaxy route as it is on Android you will be able to use Zoombet - great little app for betting through BF and quick even when signal is poor owing to the low data usage. I swear by it.
That said, the phone itself is pretty rubbish (I have one). Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: Graham C on April 11, 2013, 11:40:38 AM Also ask them if that's the very best deal. You can get a new iphone contract on the 4s for £22.50 pm or even a Samsung S3 from £17.50 from the various phone sites, ask if they'll give a better deal to match them. (from dialaphone fwiw)

I will get back to them and ask if they can go slightly lower on the iPhone contract. Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: kinboshi on April 11, 2013, 03:24:30 PM Also worth remembering that the iphone doesn't have a swappable battery, the Samsung does. So for less than a fiver you can get a second battery, or even get a couple of them - as well as desktop charger. That way you don't have to worry about it running out of charge when you're away for a weekend, etc.
(This is my biggest hate with the HTC One X which is otherwise a cracking phone. If the Samsung Galaxy III had been out when I got the One X, I would have gone for the Samsung just for this reason - as they are very similar phones otherwise. So I had to get one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/EasyAcc-Portable-Universal-External-Blackberry/dp/B006FRD8QU/ref=as_li_wdgt_ex?&linkCode=wsw&tag=blondepoker-21 which will work with the iphone as well.) Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: The Camel on April 11, 2013, 03:41:43 PM Can someone answer my "refresh odds on betfair site" question?
Of 1gb, how much would that use? Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: The Camel on April 11, 2013, 03:47:34 PM Also, when it says free wifi, does that mean if I'm using wifi I won't be using a portion of my internet usage?
Sorry for being dim, but I actually don't know how these things work.. if there is no wifi I can get internet from regular phone signal? Amirite? Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: AndrewT on April 11, 2013, 03:52:35 PM +1 on the charger thing - I have an iPhone and it sucks up the juice super quick when you do anything with it.
Also, as a geek, the reason I held off on iPhones (and all Apple products) for so long was that I was a big tweaker and fiddler. After popping my iCherry that isn't a concern any more - these things just work and you don't need to faff about with them. Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: AndrewT on April 11, 2013, 03:54:50 PM Betfair refresh uses teeny tiny internet amounts.
Wifi is entirely separate from the phone usage - that refers to you using the internet via your phone connection. You can switch off the phone connection and just use wifi - I did this when I was in the US to avoid big bills. I just connected up to the free wifi in Starbucks if I needed the internet. Post by: LonOhRay on April 11, 2013, 06:00:40 PM Also, when it says free wifi, does that mean if I'm using wifi I won't be using a portion of my internet usage? Correct about the wifi, all casinos will have free wifi and other places the like but often not the most reliable.Sorry for being dim, but I actually don't know how these things work.. if there is no wifi I can get internet from regular phone signal? Amirite? Shouldn't have a problem using 1GB worth but if you switch your '3G' settings off when in casinos and at home (use home wifi connection) you won't use any of the allowance there. One massive negative I have found with all my IPhones is battery life after ~12 months of constant use the battery just goes. I can't leave the house at 8 and expect to call a taxi at 3am as it will be dead, certainly can't play a tournament with it and update from 12-11 whilst texting because it will be long dead. - this is after a years constant use though and I never have a problem the first 10 months or so. - Always carry a charger in the car. 24 month contracts not the best for the above reason but other than that I can't live without an iPhone anymore Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: The Camel on April 12, 2013, 04:19:25 PM So I went with the iPhone.
Amazingly it has arrived within 24 hours! First problem has arrived within seconds. They said I could use my old Sim card, but a new one has arrived with the phone. Can I put the old one in to download contacts and then put the new one in.. or is the phone linked to one sim card only? Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. Which smartphone? Post by: redarmi on April 12, 2013, 04:35:53 PM Iphones use smaller simcards so I would have thought you will need the new one.

What network are you on? For my mum's phone who's on giffgaff I had to go through this procedure to sort the same problem: STOLEN FROM GIFFGAFF website...... ------------------------------- From your iPhone home screen, click on the icon "Settings" > click "General" > click "Network" > click "Mobile Data Network" > tap on the words next to "APN" and you'll then be able to edit the settings APN - giffgaff.com Username - vertigo Password - password (This is the word "password" not your giffgaff password) --------------------------------- Her APN was set to O2.com so I just changed it and it was job done. If yours doesn't look similar to whatever network you're with then I'd guess you need to find out what it needs to be and change it as well. Good luck. Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century. I love the iPhone for it's ease of use and time-wasting potential, but I find the call quality pretty bad and texting's difficult and fraught with typos (must get used to turning it sideways). But my main gripe is that you can't feel the thing vibrate in your pocket, and the ringer isn't loud enough to compensate when you're in a noisy setting :-/ Title: Re: Moving into the 21st Century.
