So I went with the iPhone.

Amazingly it has arrived within 24 hours!

First problem has arrived within seconds.

They said I could use my old Sim card, but a new one has arrived with the phone.

Can I put the old one in to download contacts and then put the new one in.. or is the phone linked to one sim card only?

Iphones use smaller simcards so I would have thought you will need the new one.

The iPhone can sync with your contacts list on your email client on your pc. Did your old phone do the same?

English only in the cardroom please.

It has linked to Hotmail contacts which is nothing like my phone contacts unfortunately.

Next problem, I am getting on the internet fine.

But every time I try to make a phone call it says call failed.

Any clues?

Have you tried switching it off and on?

Also, as a geek, the reason I held off on iPhones (and all Apple products) for so long was that I was a big tweaker and fiddler. After popping my iCherry that isn't a concern any more - these things just work and you don't need to faff about with them.

I was tempted to quote Andrews post earlier  and say - apart from all the times when they don't but I thought it wasn't being very constructive.

This still isn't being constructive, just thought it was apt.

It could be that the sim isn't activated yet.  My Mum had a new phone recently and had to wait a day or so for it to activate.

Do I have to do anything to activate it?

Sorry for being such a thickie, I understand as much about technology as Margaret Thatcher knew about compassion.

Yes you do - you need to contact your phone company and get them to activate your new sim (to essentially switch your phone number from the old sim to the new one)

Despite my 'they just work' post of earlier, this was the one hiccup I ran into with mine as this wasn't explaiined anywhere and I only discovered it by googling.

Boom! Thanks Dr Marbles.

Last question (probably)

So now I can make phonecalls.. Hurrah!

But when I switched the wifi off, the iphone won't get onto the internet.

Help appreciated.

What network are you on?

For my mum's phone who's on giffgaff I had to go through this procedure to sort the same problem:

STOLEN FROM GIFFGAFF website......

-------------------------------

From your iPhone home screen, click on the icon "Settings" > click "General" > click "Network" > click "Mobile Data Network" > tap on the words next to "APN" and you'll then be able to edit the settings

    APN -  giffgaff.com
    Username -  vertigo

Password - password (This is the word "password" not your giffgaff password)

---------------------------------

Her APN was set to O2.com so I just changed it and it was job done.

If yours doesn't look similar to whatever network you're with then I'd guess you need to find out what it needs to be and change it as well.

Good luck.

Useful link with some APN settings. Pretty sure yours will be amongst these somewhere.
