Title: What do you think when you see this sort of thing in the Online chat box?....
Post by: tikay on April 29, 2013, 11:23:10 AM

This utterly fascinates me, almost a fixation.

What mental image of the authors does it conjure up in your mind when you see it?

Why would anyone play poker if they made statements like this?

I know we all get a little frustrated at times with the game, but that's part of the whole thing, surely?

If instead of poker, we fished, or played Ten Pin Bowling or whatever as a recreation, would we continue if it got us like this?

I'm not here to diss these folks, it just interests me what others think.

I can't help conjuring up a vision of these people. It is not exactly flattering either, but like the "Sausage" bloke, it helps to understand them if we want to understand it ourselves. I want to, but I can't.

I witnessed all these comments on one table, in one evening. It was a $25 buck Tourney, no big deal, though all things are relative, that is big (clearly too big) for some. (And no, it was not next door).

Names have been removed, because it is not personal, & I won't name the site, but it matters not, it happens on most sites. Needless to say, you never see/hear this stuff in Live Poker.

I know many of you will say (perhaps correctly) "so what?", but Online Poker is not exactly booming, it needs new blood, & plenty of it. I'm quite convinced that this sort of stuff is not exactly a great advertisement for our game.

These all occurred after totally standard plays/beats.

And dissing bad play, which we see folkls do every day, even on a fairly sphisticated (as to poker ability) forum such as blonde.

The play was so bad it was unreal

Usually followed by "it was so bad they busted me".

Why would you diss other players when we think they are bad, & we are here to relieve them of their money? Surely we WANT to play inferior players?

Cake & eat it?

I might not get a single reply, & everyone on earth might disagree with me, but I've been meaning to ask this for ages, so I'm happy I have.

Life is full of mysteries, far beyond my understanding.

Shush @ TFT.....

Yes, we ALL ignore it, but that was not my point. I'm trying to visualise these people, find out why they would play a game if they take a beat so badly that they make (imo) a complete cock of themselves? If you reacted like that every time you lost, you'd be embarrassed, surely?

I got the hope you die of cancer line in one of the ISPT feeders the other day after getting there, it was in a 2 euro comp.

Mind boggles.

It is a complete waste of time trying to understand why these people act like this imo, we will never be able to truly understand.

Have you ever met anyone in live poker, or just plain real life, say that to you?

Guess it is all a part of the keyboard warrior thing.

Plus, thankfully, none of them have ever, presumably, seen real life tragedies, be it cancer, death, mental illness, at close hand, or to their own family, or themself.

If you are on Twitter, & follow poker players, you see the "Live" version, when they Tweet from a Live Poker Table. "The retarded moron next to me is SO bad".

Meanwhile, sat at the table, he is presumably not saying the same things.....

I'd rather like to try though.

Most had some "sport" with Mr Sausage, (diferent subject, but same thing really) but really, it would be rather nice if we could help to understand the problem. We need to understand it before we can (hope to) solve it.

There's nowt as queer as folk. Don't understand it at all - i've been in the presence of people who have really lost their rag playing online and it makes me laugh at the absurdity of it tbh. Guess some people are just more highly-strung than others.

The whole thing makes me incredibly sad for everyone. For those dishing it out,  and those on the receiving end.

Terrible tragedies occur when the first group get power over the second.

Can't claim to understand it

In a minor way I had it yesterday

There was an issue so on a (seems to be unmoderated) forum I get the line

"You are such an incompetent twat"

Fair comment aside, I sort out the issue over 6-7 PMs, various emails

In PMs

"thank you so very very much for sorting this"

and nothing to withdraw the comment he made in public, which is still there....

Internetz is confusing, but not as confusing as people.

Happened to me too just shocking. Mostly seems to happen in small feeder comps, does anyone get this kind of abuse at higher stakes?

There are loads of bigoted, unintelligent, moronic, people out there.  The internet allows them to indulge themselves to the full.

My crack is far too high-brow for most of them. Occasionally, I fire the odd comment if inclined but it is far better than any of these low-level insult exchanges.  Mostly, I ignore and don't bother to look at the chat.

It bothers me not online.  Live, when tired, the odd bit of needle can get a rise from me, but I will work to eradicate that.

Don't forget that idiots, are idiots, are idiots - playing poker, in online forum discussion, chanting at a football match, talking in a pub.  In poker it can be a great weakness to spot and sometimes it pays to exploit it - part of the game for me.

I can see how it does affect people though and the point about it being damaging for the poker environment online I am sure has some merit.

I haven't no, I'd be doing an Audley Harrison on there ass if they did.

I think it's two different things to berate a player for being terrible just for the sake of it, which is ofc beyond stupid, compared to you moaning about a villain that played a hand terribly and got lucky and bust you which is understandably pretty frustrating, but all part of the game.

Good question. I don't play higher stakes, but my gut reaction would be no, not so much, because, I assume, they understand poker better.

And that is part of my interest.

I have a sort of (admittedly daft) vision that Online Poker would do better (more players, so good for all of us, both sides of the table) if we could reduce this sort of nonsense. But first we have to understand it.

I think it is all about the distance created between you and the other player created by you being online by yourself, probably in your room or whatever. You are not face to face with these people so you can feel that general public courtesy need not apply. So you can over-amplify your emotions to joke levels without much consequence and that freedom of outrageous expression can become addictive as its unavailable in the 'real world', and could be these people's little sin in life, to berate others to outrageous levels. I don't think they are looking for the person they are abusing to feel down about what they say either, instead for them to be riled so as to feel the same level of annoyance they do.

I doubt they would be happy, for example, if they said I hope you die of cancer, and the person they said it to, was actually struggling with it. A lot of it is throw-away statements that the person saying them doesn't actually mean, but they are trying to vent their frustrations in the most explicit way possible as a form of weird stress relief.

These people may be stand up guys in real life.

It may sound like I am defending it, but of course I am not, you said Tikay you were trying to understand it.

It would interesting to know if 888 get the same thing on their webcam tables, where you can see who you're playing with.

Err yes, tell me about it.......

I'm regularly accused of being some sort of moronic retarded twat just for doing my job, but that's a different thing really. As a general rule, poker players don't understand how it works on the other side of the table, but they say it knowing we cannot respond in kind, even if we so wished, because they are Clients. Pretty low really.

Anyway, that is off-topic. Back to the reaction to bad, or more correctly, standard beats.

Yes, easy. But I'm trying to find out why.

It does not bother me, personally, as such, not at all. I suppose I do feel rather sorry for them, but thats all.

When I see it, I sort of sit there & shake my head in disbelief, but no, it does not trouble me as such. I just have an inquisitive mind. Looking the other way will never solve it.

For a lot of people gambling, and here specifically Online Poker, is a displacement activity.

An escape from real life troubles. Addictive too

So when something intrudes on that escape, such as a perceived "bad" play, or an outdraw, it has a magnified effect on the psyche of the person on the receiving end

Not only does it spoil their enjoyment, not even accounting for the financial "loss" or absence of "win" that may be an issue if someone is playing higher stakes than is sensible, but it intrudes on their escpae from their troubles like a dagger into their mental state of mind

The response is as much a comment on their own situation as directed at the opponent, but the kneejerk reaction is to want to make the opponent feel as bad as they are feeling. To spread the "pain"

Add this to issues such as immaturity and lack of education and you get a perfect storm of chatbox abuse, the type of which would make most reasonable people cringe.

We used to see some of it on blonde too. Fortunately serial offenders don't post on here any more, by our choice

Appreciate you are trying to understand but some people can be difficult to fathom , I suppose you could ask "why do some people read The Sun newpaper ?"  Parallels ?

I think Andrew T has summed it up pretty well

"There are legions of annoying, boorish, moronic dipshits in the world.

I normally find a little "boooooooooom" sets these people off a little more

Reason as to why?  They are yet to invent a computer screen that can punch you on the nose.

Seriously it's as simple as that.  For different reasons a lot of people enjoy the pain and discomfort of others, most people suppress these feelings as they are wrong and immoral.  However people get a buzz out of affecting people.  The lighter souls in life feel better about themselves after they help someone and you can make the case that they've actually helped someone to make themselves feel better about theirselves and therefore it's all for selfish reasons.

Others prefer the much easier route of making other peoples' days worse than their own.  'Something bad has happened to me, I want you to feel worse than I do.'  That one is normally a snap reaction, heat of the moment 'I'm disappointed, someone else must be to blame, someone else must pay' sort of reaction.

A few down the bottom end of the spectrum have an almost fetish like enjoyment of the discomfort of others, and will actively try to upset and affect other people in a negative way.  It's how they get their buzz and give themselves validation.

And on the internet there is an assumed anonymity which makes all of the above consequence free in the mind of the perpetrator (although as we have seen in recent Twitter and Facebook related court cases, this is now no longer true as a rule).

Cliffs:  People have always done stupid and hurtful things to other people.  Technology allows us to do this in brand new ways.

Adds to the scene of the game perhaps allowing players to play a little out of line to get one-upsmanship on each other. Also makes the game more interesting to play in as it is getting heated, rather than a somewhat stale affair?

The highlighted bit made me lol,

I did get some abuse aimed at me for a while for certain update threads I use to do, never bothered me tbf, as only use to do them to add a bit of entertainment and try and get people to enjoy a nights poker, most people enjoyed them (I hope).

Does chatbox abuse stop me enjoying poker? Not really but my skin is thicker than most and seeing someone have a rant does make me chuckle at times, but if they start getting out of order ill always say something or report it whoever they are.

I had an amusing meeting with someone at the welcome party of UKIPT Galway last year. A reg that I had been sitting a lot and running pretty hot against on ipoker that would say all the things under the sun. Wishing cancer, I'm gunna find out where you live and shoot your family etc. etc.

I doubt I'll forget the look on his face when I told him my screen name. He was just a regular 19 year old guy, was extremely sheepish and embarrassed when I reminded him in front of a lot of people the kind of stuff that he said. Played him since and he hasn't said a word.

The disconnect that a keyboard and a monitor gives you between what you say and the consequences of your actions can change people greatly as we all know. I'd suggest that most of the people that do this kind of stuff are reasonable people though, and would be extremely embarrassed if they had to confront those on the receiving end.

For me, the inner levels of frustration they must feel to want to type stuff like that is punishment enough.

Idiots in the chat box almost entirely put my mother off online poker. She plays on Sky Poker now, which I presume is the nicest chat box wise (but also assume is where most of the quotes from the OP came from). My mother represents the hobby new depositing demographic we all desperately need in poker, so I personally feel this is a bigger issue than a lot of people might think. Poker needs to be a lot more fun and social across the board.

As a player on the receiving end, never had a problem with it, possibly because I used to play at Napoleons where the regs would say much worse to your face. The one interweb thing that really dumbfounds me is calculated trolling over long periods of time. A momentary loss of inhibition behind the safety of the chat box I can understand why it would happen, but people who waste their own time because they don't like something on the interwebs makes no sense to me at all.

Oh and fudge the lot of you, you muthajammers.

I don't think they are reasonable people at all. If their actions had no consequences in real life, they would happily carry out their threats.

Witness any Holocaust or Genocide. The people who threaten to torture and kill people in a chat box are the same people who do it for real when given the opportunity.

If anyone thinks it can't happen here, think again.

I got the hope you die of cancer line in one of the ISPT feeders the other day after getting there, it was in a 2 euro comp.

Mind boggles.

What does that involve?

I remember an old Eddie Izzard stand up routine where he went into a serious bit about vandals compared to builders.  He said the lure of vandalising something is all about 'changing the energy or make up' of something, much like the desire to build, but vandalising something is of course a lot more easier.

I think it's the same with chatbox warriors.  It's obviously much harder to build a rapport with people and build friendships, much easier to affect people by being rude and abusive.  And that buzz of affecting another life, changing something which wouldn't have been changed without you, is probably the desire most if not all people crave.  Most people like to be noticed and remembered.  And to mess with stuff, either positively or negatively.

I find it a normal, if fairly rare, part of playing online poker. Happens usually at the lower stakes.
Presumably those indulging in this behaviour are some or all of the following: young, testosterone fuelled, immature, inexperienced (in life and in poker), bad losers, losers and weak. I wouldnt read too much into it, nor should it put rational people off playing.
Having said that I rarely ignore these people, but the response will be just to remind them of their weakness/etc.

I have a sort of (admittedly daft) vision that Online Poker would do better (more players, so good for all of us, both sides of the table) if we could reduce this sort of nonsense. But first we have to understand it.

This sort of language is pretty rotten and clearly designed to be as offensive and malicious as possible, but you have to be fist pumping if you're in a game where this sort of stuff is going off in the chat surely?
If you subscribe to the view that good grinders hardly ever use use the chat box then these guys must be the absolute worst. Personally I'd be against any action that discouraged these people from playing.
You have to develop a pretty thick skin about a lot of things in poker and I think this is one of the easiest things not to tilt about.

It sucks for the guy ITT who's mum was put off online poker because of weak minded people in the chat box. She should rest assured that her profits in the game will come from people with a range of different weaknesses, some of whom like to wave a big white banner in the chat just in case you don't spot them right away. I'd advise her to turn the chat box off. She shouldn't have to, but the game would be tougher if these people weren't playing.

Tikay might not like this but I think it's good

I may or may not like it, which is not the point, if it helps me understand it, I'd really like to hear why.

Its nothing to do with my personal views as such. That is a whole different ball game. We'd best not go there. Ever. ;)

I just think it's good because it enables idiots (let's face it all these people are idiots) to lose control and tilt. I've had the cancer wishes upon me, the mum insults, racial things. I couldn't give 2 flying fucks and welcome more of it.  They help me identify them as tilters and losers and usually adapt accordingly much more quickly.

Trouble is that it puts other people off who would be happy losing money to you, so I'm not really sure you actually benefit.

Funniest online chat comeback I ever heard of:

Some idiot was being massively abusive in the chatbox after losing a pot. His opponent typed in response: "I've just told your mum about the filthy and abusive language you use. I'm afraid she can't respond though. She's got her mouth full."

That reminds me of the Jimmy Carr response to a heckle in Birmingham.

Bit coarse, that.

Once I was on the receiving end of "Get back to the cotton field nigga".

My location stated (Birmingham) so our geographically challenged friends in the US obv thought I lived in Alabama. But therein lies the answer. Why do people take comments personally when they clearly can't be personalised by design? Why waste time picturing how a poster writes like a tall person when they could easily turn out to be short? Why ponder trying to find deep meaning and understanding for a superficial surface puff of human emotion.

My Dad never swears. We were in the car the other day and a woman pulled out right in front of us causing my dad slam on the anchors and scream "bleeding bitch" before returning almost instantly to normal. I was quite shocked really but I wouldn't judge his whole character on that one nano-second of mindless verbal ejaculation. It meant nothing so you put no weight or credibility to it.

So what do I think when I see FACK OFF FREAK WITH MY CHIPS or BURN IN HELL FREAKY LUCKY MORON? I think lol.

I don't think "I hope your children get cancer" qualifies as one nano-second of mindless verbal ejaculation.

If I punch someone in the face, can I excuse it as one nano-second of mindless physical ejaculation?

Yes, I know one example hurts more than the other. For me, it's the first one.

But that guy doesn't know you have children. So you're adding the weight to his words yourself. I don't see the mileage in doing that in the internet poker environment. You are a badass poker player and you can't let some internet geek knock you out your stride with a few choice words. Nah baby, next customer, this freaky lucky moron is coming through. It doesn't affect me one bit and don't see how letting it helps you play good poker. As far as the wider question of changing the world and why are people the way they are? I dunno, seems tough.

I've been called a c$%& a w***** a b&6$3rd and all sorts at the table.

I knocked a guys drunken mate out who was in seat 3 I was in 4 and he was in seat 2. My smiling to the insults  seemed to work, and then he shoved on me, I called with 66, he had Tc2c rivers a Ten and gets up, shouts in my face, "GET IN THERE YOU FUCKING TNUC" I was just speechless, the tournament director was sat on the table chatting to someone and she didn't do anything. But life went on, still minraised the next hand ^.^ Apparently the guy who I knocked out before this was a hardnut, so staying stum was certainly better than taking a jab to the face. And they were bad enough that I'll take some abuse in my workplace

The chatbox online tends to be hilarious, I never really see any abuse on pokerstars but I'm not really interested in the chatbox in general.

On the rare occasion that I play online I never get angry or aggressive and it makes me laugh when others do. Without naming names a poker pro who is a blonde member got extremely abusive to me a few years ago when I felted him in a GUKPT sat close to the bubble. I just gave my standard lol response which seems to irritate him even more. lol

As to wishing other people dead or catch horrible incurable ailments is total beyond me and anybody caught doing so should receive a lifetime ban from the poker site.

Idiots the lot of them, I just try and wind them up even more for a laugh. You would think at some point people get to the stage where they have learned there is simply no point complaining about poker as it doesn't change anything, but clearly I'm wrong.  ;dingdell;

This I will never understand, the game has got hard enough as it is without encouraging people to play better by saying that sort of stuff.

At a guess i would say its people who are tight with money and are either playing beyond their means or just people who are bad losers.

I have seen it live & online in various comps, its pretty sad really but everyone has their reasons(not proper reasons obv but to them)

ignore it if aimed at me but if someone else usually i have to say something whether its a bad beat or anything really its only a game and people should learn to enjoy it!

Dan got it imo, ppl take poker very personally, amd needlessly so - not just in losing either, you hear ppl say 'I made this guy do X' 'I got this idiot to go allin with Y' so the hit to the ego combined with burning uncontrolable frustration makes ppl lash out and like always the nastier they can be the more satisfied they will be, and like tommy says you can say w/e you want sat behind a screen.

There is a reg i play HU on ipoker who often goes off at me frequently apologises and i always just say wtf are you doing? I just cant help myself is the answer, and this isva gd winning pro player, so can kinda get why less experienced players might go off.

All pretty embarrassing though, its jus a game lol

I don't believe the 'I hope you die of cancer' type of chat is explainable as a nano second insta reaction - it takes a reasonable amount of time time to type it and hit return.

But as someone who's always only been a small stakes player I'd say the comments are worse now than they were a few years ago (before it would have been 'God you're so shit' etc)

And I've always just assumed that it's how moronic players think hardass poker pros live their daily lives - so they start by copying Hellmuth and then take it further and further over time.

I reckon they think it shows the rest of us that they are top top players. Which obviously rings true in a $2 rebuy...........
