Title: Eurovision Song Contest 2013
Post by: Chompy on May 07, 2013, 07:25:04 PM
http://www.oddschecker.com/tv/eurovision/winner

^ All the prices and songs here.

Fwiw I'm massively against Denmark @ 6/4. It's being priced up the same as Norway a few years ago and Sweden last year and it's nowhere near as clear cut this time.

The ESC is best played aggressively and my four against the field are Netherlands (25/1), Georgia (25/1), Sweden (33/1) and Moldova (125/1+).

Sweden are now around twice the price as when I backed them, which isn't good, but the song is proven with voters. Melodifestivalen is half Swedish phone votes and half international juries. He finished second to a hyped-up crap song with the Swedes and crushed the phone voting, which augurs well.

I've no idea why Moldova isn't priced up in the live 25-33/1 category.

First semi Tue 14, second semi Thu 16, Final Sat 18.

Same for Fred.

We have backed 17 different countries so far, + NATO, UNESCO & the UN.

How can we lose?

We've even backed Moldova. Is there such a place? Pretty sure Michael Bentine, Peter Sellars & Harry Secombe invented Moldova.

I'm currently going through the list and, really, purely in terms of songs (and not voting patterns) the top of the betting is not that strong. Sweden and Netherlands do stand out when put up against the rest.

^^ Very much this.

Tonight's semi-final is very likely to produce the overall winner - Thursday's semi is poor in comparison - which makes it unmissable viewing.

Just done this - began as serious aid memoire to the songs before I just started being rude about the singers.

Denmark - barefoot singer, good, but not the best

Ukraine - V pretty brunette, great singer, song promises more than it delivers

Norway - pretty blonde, quite electro, good modern song, bit too modern?

Russia - Ballad, bit X-Factory, quite dreary.

Azerbaijan - Impressively eyebrowed man, though charisma-free. Boy-band ballad, unmemorable.

Georgia - Boy/girl combo, Dreary ballad, goes nowhere, though with one big note they hold for a while.

Italy - Comedy sideburns and quiff. Starts off super boring, does build to somewhat of a climax once some guitars come in. May be a grower - unfortunately most people will only hear it once as Italy go straight to the final.

Germany - Cascada, may sing out of tune on night. Standard Eurodance number in response to last years winner, though nowhere near as catchy as that.

UK - Bonnie Tyler - a poor song which will be sung badly by someone who was famous a million years ago. Very similar to Englebert Humperdinck, who sank without trace.

Netherlands - Wonderful song, original entry for Eurovision. May need a bit of oomph in performance as it's quite a delicate song.

Sweden - Obv amazing, genuinely catchy and memorable song - very hummable. Big finish as well.

Ireland - Eurodance sung by a boyband reject. A load of nothing.

San Marino - two songs in one, first 2 minutes quite promising big ballad, then changes into up tempo with a moderately big finish. Quite impressive considering the price. Not sung in English though and nearly no one has heard of San Marino.

Greece - Beards in kilts - sound like the Greek Smashmouth. Will stand out as being different. A lot will depend on the staging - will they be comedy fun or comedy annoying?

Finland - If Ke$ha came from Helsinki. Poppy enough, but not quite enough going on. Alsosays 'ding dong' in a way that screams 'shit Eurovision'

Serbia - Three girls get lost on their way to a hen night. Another Eurodance song by numbers, file with the rest.

France - In some ways you have to admire France, they keep putting in idiosyncratic songs which are really quite good but entirely out of place at Eurovision. This is a bluesy song, a bit like something Texas might do. I really like it, but it has no chance of winning.

Belarus - If you liked Kiss Kiss by Holly Valance, then this is whatever the Belarus Lidl version of that is. Will make everyone go 'Oh, this is exactly like that Holly Valance song, except nowhere near as good'

Moldova - Big dress, silly hair. People may remember her as 'that bird with the odd hair'. No one will remember the song.

Malta - Has the lyric 'His name is Jeremy, he works in IT'. Warning - this song contains ukelele. Like Mumford and Sons, except worse. Competing with Azerbaijan guy for Biggest Eyebrows award.

Armenia - Written by Tony Iommi out of Black Sabbath! And yet is terrible.

Hungary - Some twee bollocks

Croatia - Like neutered Il Divo.

Austria - Katie Melua hair. I just finished listening to the song ten seconds ago and can't remember it.

Romania - Appear to have sent a castrato. Halfway through it seems to get remixed by Skrillex for 30 seconds. Most comedy one so far, and yet he's doing it completely seriously.

Estonia - Brunette sings unmemorable ballad.

Slovenia - Someone else who has been listening to Skrillex. Ultra-standard Eurodance underneath though.

Israel - Supernanny does Eurovision. Ballad sung in Hebrew, the language least amenable to singing, due to all the rasps at the back of the throat.

Montenegro - Balkan hiphop with yet more Skrillex.

Belgium - More eyebrows, boring

Iceland - Sabretooth from Xmen has a go at singing the world's most boring ballad.

Lithuania - I've got this far, I have to finish the list. This fucker cannot sing at all.

Switzerland - Has some chugga-chugga guitar underneath it, with does make it stand out a bit. Best of the rags so far.

Albania - If you've always wondered 'I wonder what Nickleback would have been like if they were from Tirana' then wonder no more. They'd be worse than Canadian Nickleback.

Spain - Starts with Bagpipes, puzzlingly. If it was sung in English you'd assume it was an Irish entry. It ends up exactly like a Corrs song.

Bulgaria - More bagpipes?!?

Latvia - Prick in a silver suit. Latvia clearly can't afford to host Eurovision.

Cyprus - Dreary shouty lady with a boxer's nose.

Macedonia - Begins as standard dreary song before being momentarily (but only momentarily) enlivened by appearance of large shouty woman.

Worried about the skrillex references.

Maybe the UK should get him to be our entry next year. We roped in a Yank last time we won.

This is still bugging me...

"Unlike previous years, the running order will not be decided by the drawing of lots, but instead by the producers, with the aim of making the shows more exciting and ensuring that all contestants have a chance to stand out, preventing entries that are too similar cancelling each other out.[37] The decision elicited mixed reactions from both fans of the contest and participating broadcasters."

Denmark would have to be a massive lay at its current price, just on the off-chance that it might get a single-figure draw, but...

Moldova to qualify is buying money @ 1.13 though. Don't know how this is still three figs to win the whole shebang. Gonna stomp all over it in match bets.

No idea how Lithuania made it - deaf vote obv strong tonight.

That Netherlands song is really divisive - people either think it's super-amazing or the dullest thing ever. I loved Scott Mills having to pretend he hadn't slagged it off something rotten as the panel all said it was great.

Title: Re: Eurovision Song Contest 2013
Post by: Chompy on May 14, 2013, 10:19:56 PM
Whatever happens in the final happens, but Sweden is the best song imo. Robin Stjurbjur driffed badly for Melodifestivalen but still crushed. Will be making him my biggest winner ever.

Also, despite tonight's performance, I'm now expecting Netherlands to do well. The performance doesn't actually count for a lot. Azer was not well done on the night and still won a couple of years ago. Netherlands was always one of those that would either do really well or bomb and the fact it's qualified is promising.

Moldova v Belarus match bets @ 10/11 each of two would be pleasing.

In a bold move, fuelled by gin and tonic, I have left my staking rules crying and frightened in the corner by unloading over a monkey on Ukraine to finish in the Top 10 at 1.27.

Cash machines only pay out at 1.0 and yet I use those all the time.

I've backed Sweden cos you're the daddy on this stuff but I just can't see it winning. But I'd guess he's the.......errrrrr.......festive type? Ummmmmmm, you know, flamboyant? And I think the pink vote helps a LOT in things like this.
You can get better than even money on it finishing top 10 which I guess you should be smashing into?

I like Holland, it's a little different and I think it can win. That's where I've put most of my money.
I also really like that Moldova song. If it was in English, I would think it had a real chance.

I have a couple of quid on Armenia to finish top ten from ages back @ 11/10. It's now 9/1 and rightly so, it's gash. Tony Iommi must be fuming they didn't do that flaming guitar bit that the Albanians did.
I reckon Denmark, Norway or Holland for the outright. Nothing welse stands out for me.
I have Holland and Sweden and have laid Azerbaijan top ten. I might top up a bit of Holland w/o Denmark @ 3/1.
You can get 37/1 Sweden w/o Denmark, Chompy.

Not seen any match bets yet and most of the good stuff won't be out till tomorrow. Still massively with Sweden, top ten and match bets.

As Morning Line was so sh*t I decided to have a sneaker at the entries

FWIW

All the ladies sound like they are doing the same power ballads, all quite good, but all very samey, and if I didnt know it was fav I would put Denmark in that category.
Of the lot I would probably go for the Russian Girl.
Liked the Moldova girl but as said, needs to be in English

Of the rest, Greek song sounded Greek! Fun

Israel, looked like Nana Mouskouri with her jugs out

Azerbajan- looks like the bloke who sings down my local. Interesting stat, they never been out of Top 8!!

Netherlands-Birds-Chompy, what were you drinking?!

Like Sweden, but no one retained since 1990.

3 vs the field

Germany
Ireland
Russia

Apart from Ireland in 93. Oh, and Ireland in 94. The glory years from 87-96, when we won it 5 times and were 2nd twice.

Looking forward to the final tonight. Shakira did really well the other night for Denmark, though I like Ukraine too.

Finland one was quite fun, although bit of a regression to the 90's.  Spain was f***ing terrible.

Jumped on the Sweden bandwagon btw and been hammering the Top 10 market all day.  Every year I tell myself I won't get too involved in this contest but just can't help myself!

Malta up after this Estonian Belarussian [EDIT, in before Adz] garbage.

It's just a pleasing song, very simple. And although it's early in the draw it's not the worst spot.

Also, if the running order was decided by show producers to give everything a chance, why is all the shite in single figures? Fumming here.

If we're pre-timing...

In a bold move, fuelled by gin and tonic, I have left my staking rules crying and frightened in the corner by unloading over a monkey on Ukraine to finish in the Top 10 at 1.27.

Cash machines only pay out at 1.0 and yet I use those all the time.

Ukraine now 9.8.

OK, kids, post-mortem time. What can we learn for next year?

The clues are there. By the time we get to Eurovision week the value has gone. We need to pick up on this shit earlier.

I expect you all to have bought and thoroughly listened to the Eurovision CD on the day of release next year and contribute to the 45 page goldmine thread that will result.

As for this year, genuine thanks to Chompy for his tip for the Melodifestivalen - that has more than paid for my ineffectual dabbling in the main event this year - a lot of fun has been had.

I just scrolled through all my bets there, not a winner amongst them.
Not only that but I actually laid my flatmate 7/2 on Hungary finishing in the top 10. He said Germany will give them 12 points (which they did!) and they also squeezed into 10th place on the 2nd last round of voting.
Absolute disaster, worst betting result of the year.

Yw sir. Robin winning Melodifestivalen was the highlight of my puntering year so far. Gave it all back on the main event but shit happens. Can't crush it every year.

Discussed Denmark with Paul Jones soon after the entries came out, at which time it was 7/1. A friend of his had told him it was nailed on. We were both pretty meh about it.

The thing I will take away is that the songs which I'd initially dismissed that did well (Denmark, Azerbaijan), when it came to the night, I thought 'actually, this is quite good'.

I certainly had it in my mind that Eurovision was something decided by kneejerk reactions to the first hearing of songs, whereas, on the continent, many many people have heard these songs on the radio/TV for weeks beforehand.

Next year, I need to listen to stuff lots before deciding.

Yeah, there was a jury that voted on the dress rehearsal last night (50%) and 50% on the phone votes.

The semifinal results are on the Eurovision site now and they must keep those results tight, because anyone with access to them can win the world.

Finland (who was thought to do well) only scraped in in 9th place. The top 3 in semi 1 were Denmark, Russia, Ukraine and in Semi 2 were Azerbaijan, Greece, Norway. These were the top 6 in the final.

I think it actually works well.

Generally, the best songs finished at the top (except for Chompy's boyfriend).

Semi results were leaked on Greek TV the year Finland won it. Sure we all remember that scandal.

Weirdest thing this week was Denmark being 6/4 to win the whole thing and 7/4 to win their semi. Still can't work that one out.

I bet on Denmark because it was pretty catchy plus had lots of views on YouTube. Did the same with Lena a few years ago. Easy game eh.

No idea why Finland did so badly. Expected better from that one. Also that Netherlands song was awful - only explanation was that Anouk is already quite popular.
