Title: I hate those meeces to pieces.
Post by: RED-DOG on July 10, 2013, 11:44:31 AM
I have an old laptop which has 4 USB ports.

When I plug a mouse into one of the ports it works fine, but when I plug it into any of the other three, it says "Found New Hardware" then a wizard pops up and asks for permission to search search for software.

That's as far as it goes. The wizard never does find any software, it just keeps on searching.

I have tried TIOAO.

Leave it plugged in the first one.

Hope this has helped.

I would do, but that means I have to plug my Voda dongle into one of the back ports and then the computer wont fit on to the table.

I'm saving the big table for when you come to dinner. I'm going to use it to barricade the door.

Have you tried downloading the drivers for the mouse from it's makers website?

Could try. . .

Plug mouse into the port that it is not working from.

Goto Control Panel, Device manager, and Universal Series Bus Controllers - when opening this menu if one of the ports shows as yellow or has a warning triangle beside it, right click uninstall.
Restart PC with mouse still in port and on re-start mouse should work, no idea why but is an issue I had with my old laptop and this worked for me.

Is that just a fancy way of turning it off and on again?

Quite.

Anyhoo....

Why would one port be fine with the mouse and another think it needs to install it?

Why can't the wizard find the software?

I tried to put the dongle in a different port and the wizard started his 'searching for, but can't find software' shenanigans again.

I think my wizard is having a funny spell.

1.Click on Start and then Control Panel.

2.Click on the Performance and Maintenance link.

Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simple double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4.

3.In the Performance and Maintenance window, click on the System icon near the bottom of the window.

4.In the System Properties window, click on the Hardware tab.

5.With the Hardware tab selected, click on the Device Manager button.

6.You can now use Device Manager to update device drivers, view the system resources a particular hardware device is using, etc.

Nope!

The device manager just opens the wizard, who unfortunately, has nothing new up his sleeve.

if you've got a Dell you can go to their website, type in your model number and it will update all your drivers for you. maybe check your manufacturers website if you have another make?

I have a Dell, but this isn't it.

I just can't figure out why it works in one port (and therefore must already have the drivers and everything else it needs) but won't work in another.

Could be hardware (the ports themselves or the motherboard) or could be a drivers/software issue.

You at DTD this Sunday?  If so bring it along and I'll have a look at it.

I don't usually play the on-line satellite, but I decided last night that it was time I started. I won a token for the 50k, at my first attempt, (Thin) so I will be there on Saturday, and have my fingers crossed for Sunday.

How do the tokens work btw? I can't see it in my account.

Acer. It works fine in other machines.

Just tried my Voda dongle, that won't work in any port. The computer recognises it, but then the wizard can't find the software. (It shouldn't need to)

I think someone has disabled something. Not mentioning and names, but Mrs Red.

Token should be there in your account.  If you go to the tournament you want to play, register for it and it will ask if you want to use your token or cash.
