Title: Robbie Fowler going to Liverpool
Post by: Indestructable on January 27, 2006, 06:21:46 PM
Seems odd that a player that can't get into the Man City team is of interest to Liverpool?
 :dontask:

Sorry just realised that a post has been started on this entitled God returns. I think you can forgive me for not making the connection between god and the player that cost us a Uefa cup spot last season.

Until Houllier got hold of him.

Im a Man Utd fan and I obviously dont like the 'Pool very much.....but as regards Robbie its a bloody shame as he WAS a superb striker and those lost years without him hurt our national team a great deal.

He will walk into the liverpool team as their strike force is just terrible IMO.

Fowler used to get ruined about being a bit chunky, He's got such great close ball control its a shame.
People dig him out cos he's a bit of a character, but, thats all good, imagine if everyone was like Beckham!!!
It only takes one Robbie fowler to cancel out hundreds of boring, mundane"football celebs"

My mate has Fowler on the back of his City shirt and he was threatening to set it on fire as it is no use now. I suggested buying a new one with Barton on the back as Barton is City through and through.

Cue the latest news:

Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton has stunned the club by handing in a transfer request.

I find it amusing that some of you think that either Houllier wasted Robbie Fowler or that he was the greatest english striker since Jimmy Greaves. The only reason that Robbie Fowler didn't get into the Liverpool team was because they use to have Englands greatest ever striker in his place and his name is Michael Owen. If Michael Owen was still at Anfield, do you honestly think that Robbie would be "coming home"?

Whilst the statement about Fowler not playing because of Owen holds some truth, wouldn't you have dropped Heskey?

In their youth's Fowler had more potential than Owen. It wasn't nurtured but the potential was definately there.

You cannot blame his talent not being nurtured, Owen came along, took his place and that was that.

No, that was part of it I admit, but also Heskey was bought and Fowler (who has a better goals tally than Owen for LFC) was dropped because Houllier hated him. His peak years from 26 to 30 were not with Liverpool and his heart went.

Under Ferguson, Wenger, Benitez or Mourinho he would have been amazing.

Jol as well ;) .

He is your childhood hero, so your views are somewhat tarnished. Fowler was good in the mid 90's, during his "peak years" he lost heart, gained weight and took drugs. I agree that he was a good striker, but he wasn't/isn't in the world class category, which Owen is. Houllier liked the big/little striker combination that meant either Heskey and Owen and if Owen was injured Fowler would get a game. Obviously, my views on Heskey is that he is a useless sack of shit, but he won more balls in the air than Fowler(for Owen to run onto) and he played better with Owen than Fowler. It's very similar to the situation at Spurs with Keane and Defoe.

I can't see Keane singing a new contract at Spurs (which runs out in the summer) I would play Defoe in front of Keane every game, but they have dropped him. The Spurs board/Jol think that by playing Keane they are trying to entice him into signing a new contract by saying " look you're No1 striker" but Keane knows that Defoe is number one and he is actually playing for a transfer, not trying to cement his place as 1st choice at Spurs.

Roll on the summer and Dirk Kuyt

Fowler still boasts 20 odd more goals for LFC than Owen. ;)

He also broke Rush's fastest to 100 goals record and he's only one off being level with King Kenny.

Kuyt to LFC! ;)

What drugs did he take? I have googled but can't find anything to support your statement.

For example-
Quote
Fowler says that he has been tested for drugs use every year since he came into the game and has nothing to hide. 'Let me say now, once and for all, that the stories are not true. Not now, not then, not ever. It is an insult to me, and an insult to me mum and dad

1 Fowler never took drugs. He actually said in a interview that some one in his family died from drug abuse, which affected him deeply and has never used them.I hope your not refering to the snorting the line goal celebration.

2 Fowler is not world class? Owen is?..Now I  dont know you Nemesis,i dont know if you ever played foot ball , or how much you watch it., so I dont know where you understanding of football comes from.
But...Fowler was world class. The most natural goal scorer of his generation. He has the kind of natural timing that comes along every 20 years. And he was what he was being a slow fucker, somehting that makes his achievements even more remarkable.

Owen is not world class.never has been, never will be.His finishing skills come from hours on the training pitch, trying to improve. He is a manufactured finisher(a bit like beckham, another grinder, altho beckham was world class on the right wing at Man u), anyone who saw Owen is his early days could see this.Owen has 2 things going for him,his mental focus and his speed.Without his speed he would be nothing. In fact every time owen gets the ball out side the box and has to "play  real" football i feel embarrased for him.VanBasten was world class, owen is no where near that level.

By all accounts it has been detected VERY early and although they postponed the op yesterday she should have it today and they reckon it is a formality.
I hope she recovers as do all Bluenoses because she really has worked wonders for us financially, turned the club into profit in an incredibly short space of time.

Yes she's been impressive.

Heskey now has a real striker to compare himself to - if he can't learn from Sutton he'll never learn.

Title: Re: Robbie Fowler going to Liverpool

Are we missing the fact that Fowler cost nothing?
Also how much do you think Fowler helped develop Owen?
Fowler on the bench gives some good options.
Owen not world class? so in that respect neither was Gary Liniker, he couldn't 'play football' but get the ball to him infront of goal and ther was a damm good chance you knew where it was going. World class is all relative to position and player type
do we want Owen to be able to 'play football' outside the box?,
NFW i'd rather see him getting goals.
Owen turns 1/2 chances into Goals, true there are more total strikers like Henry, but they are rare animals.

Owen scores Goals in an England shirt fact, give him players like Rooney, Gerrard around him and he will always score goals for England

Why is Owen bashing so popular these days.

Why is Owen bashing so popular these days.

The Owen bashers are all jealous Scousers, still bitter because Owen snubbed Liverpool and went to Real Madrid.

As for Owen not being world class is just laughable. Unless Owen gets injured he will become Engalnds leading goalscorer by a country mile.  He is also a former European Footballer of the year, so if that doesn't make him world class, what does?

Owen scores 1 goal every 0.52 games

Shearer is 1 goal every 0.50

Henry is 1 goal every 0.49

Nistlerooy 1 goal every 0.60 games

Shevchenko 1 goal every 0.49 games

Ronaldo 1 goal in 0.49 games

IMO owen is a world class player. He has scored at the highest level consistently (international football) and would be a massive miss if he did not make the world cup.

As for him only playing box this is a ridiculous arguement (a) as said he is a striker and therefore being good in the box is his job, (b) I must have being seeing things when he scored against Argentina and numerous other goals by breaking the offside trap. Also wasn't Fowler's main skill playing in the box and his ability to finish.

Fowler never proved whether his world class or not at his peak in the early 90's. A smattering of England apperances and has never played in the champions league. He certainly has never been world class since he moved from Liverpool.

Ok,

I'm not bitter about Owen. He IS world class and I do think he's our best out and out goalscorer and will easily break the all time England record.

All I'm saying is Fowler COULD have been better. I'm not saying he is, but he easily could have been.

i cant believe fowler is only 30!!!

What a player - good luck at liverpool robbie, you were a great player and you have got time under someone like benitez to rediscover it.

I think we forget how good this guy was in his day

I remember one yr going up to anfield to see my beloved gooners.  Terrible traffic meant that we got there at 3.15 and missed an ian wright goal.  sat down and 45 mins later left after seeing a fowler hat-trick and at 3-1 down thought an early trip home was in order.

At a free transfer and still only 30 (Bergkamp and Shearer are both c. 35 and Sheringham will be 40 - but they look after themselves) i would love to have signed him at arsenal.  Reckon Wenger would have sorted him out as well - diet etc.

To be honest tipster he makes me laugh. He calls me stupid for not reading posts properly when he doesn't write his own ones properly! ie "Liverpool haven't beaten Man U in the last 85 years" - erm.... yes they have - you just blundered. :D

In terms of football he obviously watches MAN YOO but not a lot of anyone else, just like most prawn sandwich merchants. I'll bet he sits in one of the three quarters of Old Trafford that doesn't sing and never goes to away games.

I like the entertainment value he brings though. He still doesn't get that you cant wind up a European Champion!  :D
