Title: Who came up with this list, & when? Post by: tikay on September 22, 2015, 05:41:34 PM I recently lost/mislaid or had stolen my Passport, so I've had to go through the rigmarole of getting a new one. I have a "Lost or Stolen Passport Renewal Reference" thing from the Passport Office, so I'm good to go.
Then I found that the form needed a countersignatory (also a photo endorsed) by one of these trades, professions or callings. Did you ever see a dafter list? What makes that list of jobs so special? How is a pub licensee, a Funeral Director or a bloody chiropodist better than, say, Tom the Cat Hater? Countersignatories must work in (or be retired from) a recognised profession or be ‘a person of good standing in their community’, eg: accountant airline pilot articled clerk of a limited company assurance agent of recognised company bank/building society official barrister chairman/director of limited company chiropodist commissioner of oaths councillor, eg local or county civil servant (permanent), but not someone who works for Her Majesty’s Passport Office (HMPO) dentist director/manager/personnel officer of a VAT-registered company engineer - with professional qualifications financial services intermediary, eg a stockbroker or insurance broker fire service official funeral director insurance agent (full time) of a recognised company journalist Justice of the Peace legal secretary - fellow or associate member of the Institute of Legal Secretaries and PAs licensee of public house local government officer manager/personnel officer of a limited company member, associate or fellow of a professional body Member of Parliament Merchant Navy officer minister of a recognised religion - including Christian Science nurse - RGN or RMN officer of the armed services optician paralegal - certified paralegal, qualified paralegal or associate member of the Institute of Paralegals person with honours, eg an OBE or MBE pharmacist photographer - professional police officer Post Office official president/secretary of a recognised organisation Salvation Army officer social worker solicitor surveyor teacher, lecturer trade union officer travel agent - qualified valuer or auctioneer - fellows and associate members of the incorporated society Warrant Officers and Chief Petty Officers Title: Re: Who came up with this list, & when? In favour of what exactly? Personally don't think it's anywhere near snobby enough. Should just be solicitors. accountants, doctors and a few others. Title: Re: Who came up with this list, & when? Personally don't think it's anywhere near snobby enough. Should just be solicitors. accountants, doctors and a few others. Most people would either have to fork out £100 or so or wait two weeks just to get a passport signed. Get rid all together, it's a dated idea. Everything about people is available these days, it doesn't need a signature on the back of a passport photo. Title: Re: Who came up with this list, & when? Post by: BulldozerD on September 23, 2015, 09:45:53 AM Just about anyone can call themselves an "accountant" these days, many accountants aren't qualified as such

Everything about people is available these days, it doesn't need a signature on the back of a passport photo. It gets worse. A Passport Photo is not much bigger than a postage stamp, but the countersignatory has to write this on the back of it..... "I certify that this is a true likeness of Mr John Smith (then his signature), Anthony Person, 4 May 2012" You'd need a degree in small writing to do that. I think I used to sign them as an "other professional person" or similar. I am guessing maybe two thirds of those didn't use to be there. Title: Re: Who came up with this list, & when? Post by: DungBeetle on September 23, 2015, 10:15:22 AM Just about anyone can call themselves an "accountant" these days, many accountants aren't qualified as such Eh? You can call yourself whatever you want on your name tag, but you can't sign off legal documents as a accountant unless you are qualified. Title: Re: Who came up with this list, & when? You can call yourself whatever you want on your name tag, but you can't sign off legal documents as a accountant unless you are qualified. Best not to get into the old qualified vs unqualified accountants argument as it can take up many pages of a forum (admittedly an Accountancy forum), but they normally want you to put your letters after your name to confirm you are a qualified accountant and then I guess they can check you out at your bodies website. I've done it for a number of people and don't charge just suggest they make a charitable donation if done via work rather than for friends. I think some form of verification makes sense as it just provides an extra albeit fairly low level of security. Title: Re: Who came up with this list, & when? What makes them better than, for example a Senior Digital Marketing Manager for a large Corporate or an Ecommerce Director in an SME? In favour of...using the freely available paid for background and reference checking services avaialble in the market. Just cos Doctor Harold Shipman of Hyde says Hilda was a good egg shouldn't make her eligible for a passport renewal. Title: Re: Who came up with this list, & when?
