Title: London Hippodrome - End of January Tournament - £275 buy in
Post by: dwayne110 on January 21, 2016, 08:56:18 PM
Hi All

Just wondering if any of you will be playing this? I'm planning to play the Saturday day one, would be great to put a face to some names.

Dwayne

So... a lot of views, no one planning to play? On a random note, went to Aspers last night to play their £80 deepstack, engaged in conversation with a random fella who said he'll be playing it. Not played an event near this size since a couple of visits to DTD back in 2012, looking forward to it :)

did you qualify or are you treating yourself?

Treating myself, end of January accrued overtime will be buying me in! Very much a 'shot', if I I'm knocked out within an hour then, well... **** happens. I do love the rush of playing a tournament that you probably really shouldn't, lol

Good luck. Full tournament report and updates welcome.

My favourite casino in the UK (because of the decor and history, rather than results or poker experience, I hasten to add)

think most London players will be playing GUKPT but the day 1b) UKIPT series you are playing may attract a spill over from those who exit so should be busy - hopefully i wont be playing therfore but will say hello in break as applicable

Thanks Tal, I promise a full report... may even throw in the odd picture for dramatic effect 🤔

I've never been there before, so it's predestined that I'll of course walk away with a shiny trophy (or just a tatty cheque).

Mr AB0151 - Cool, well I'll be on here during the tourney providing updates so if you're around let me know.

I remember the opening pages of Red Dog's diary, something along the lines of playing all arsed backwards. That may be my desired style of choice ... I may even stumble upon something approaching optimal play! 😮

Check out the cellar and make sure you read all the things on the walls. Some incredible history in the place.

Me too. Whenever I'm with a friend in town I often take them in for a drink/look around and they always think it's quite something

Alternative number 4 is ready, primed... and perhaps anti-GTO, day dreaming over the inevitable pile of cash to throw on his bed and roll around in tomorrow...

Thanks Pads, I feel I play with a degree of fear nowadays....

So, we drifted along for a couple hours until we found  Qs Qh:

300-600/50 ante

We're second under the gun, choose to limp (🙈) Playing around 16,000 as its been three bets galore.

Get 3-bet to around 3k, folds round, we jam, Kings...

Down to 3k, next hand shove Q-9 for a triple up.

Two hand later, one of the hands in the triple up hand who had shown a propensity for calling 'light' limps under the gun, call/call/call ... I go all in with  Ahrt Th... SNAP call with the old  Kh 6h... Fold fold

 Qd 2c Td Flop

  9c

 Jc

😢☺️

That feeling of inevitability when you know a guy's hero call will win. The chap had me barely covered, but obvs loved them hearts :)

Next time, maybe?

Hard luck, sir. What did you think of the venue?

Yep, interesting place, i noted Judy Garland and Sammy Davis Jr, amongst others, had performed there. To be honest I was a little absorbed with the poker, not often I'll play a buy in of that level ... next time :)

Fair enough.

Charlie Chaplin was on the bill the first night, as was Little Titch, who was the biggest variety act around at the time. The place cost a quarter of a million pounds to build, which was a tidy sum in 1900. They had elephants and all manner of animals in there, plus part of the stage and the seating areas could be flooded for aquatic acts and boats.

Having been knocked out of a comp a few months ago and having a friend still in, I had the opportunity to wander around and read the various bits of memorabilia and history on the walls. Better than donating on the little wheel or elsewhere.

After the music hall days, it became a very successful nightclub called the Talk of the Town, which had A-List acts aplenty in the sixties and seventies.

Peter Stringfellow owned it at one point.

Throughout its history, it seems to have maintained a child-like imagination and a desire to bring pleasure to anyone who walks through its doors. I like being in buildings that have a soul. Not in a Poltergeist way, obviously, but you know what I mean.

There are better places for the poker purist to play, no question, and DTD remains the stone cold nuts for that, but there is something about the Hippodrome that makes me smile..
