It is all there?

Gascoigne made a bad racist joke and ended up here.  I am sure everybody has heard far worse and Jim Davidson made a whole career out of it.  It seems odd that they decide to put the boot into somebody so obviously fragile as Gascoigne.  I dare say Mantis wouldn't even have bothered throwing him back in the sea.

For example, Farage's immigrant poster in the EU campaign was far more offensive in my eyes, and far more likely to gave caused an upswing in racial hatred, but we don't see him in court.

Strange times.

Actually, it is all there now. It wasn't when I looked.

I agree with you btw.

Think you are right.  I knew the detail already, and wasn't sure if I had just missed it on first scan.  I only noticed it at the second time I read it a couple of minutes later whilst I was writing the reply.  Also I am fairly sure the details of the fine weren't there when I first saw it.

They tend to put a line up when they have "breaking news" and then flesh out the page a few minutes later.

Think it went up "as it happened".

Mr Gascoigne arrived at Court for a planned 10am hearing, & had told his legal team he would be pleading Not Guilty.

Then, after some toing & froing, & an hours delay, which delayed Court proceedings, he changed his plea to Guilty. Think that sort of wrong-footed - nutmegged* even - everyone.

* For the benefit of Tom, "nutmegged" is a football term, & Mr Gascoigne is an ex professional footballer.

I now seem to recall you started supporting a random football team about 3 years ago. What team is it, & how are they doing this season?

No idea. I tried to be interested, I really did, but I just couldn't manage it.

Don't know why the black dude is humiliated? Surely it's Gazza who's humiliated in this instance? The judge doesn't mention the reaction of the crowd but I can't imagine them rolling in the aisles from laughter here. Probably very awkward, very uncomfortable moment. So don't really know why the black guy is humiliated by drunken mess gazza making everybody cringe or why the judge needs to protect said humiliated black guy from his faux humiliation. I mean really when did everybody start getting all outraged and humiliated by everything? I think we need to start giving society a bit more credit these days, but I do remember Jim Davidson from the 70's, there was also Bernard Manning back then as well. As far as starfish go I would probably tell them to grow a backbone in this example.

Interesting post Mr MANTIS, as always, though I am beginning to suffer from OCD so I need to remind you that starfish are invertebrates so growing a backbone might be a bit of a prob.

Carry on.

I just don't get society full stop anymore.

Do black people not tell white people jokes?

Never once heard anyone moan about that and surely it happens?

I recall some Asian comedians doing a hilarious spoof of 'going for an English'. Have times changed so much I should now take offence at that?!

I would love half an hour with these people that no one can ever actually speak to or photograph that take such offence.

Yes, just like people in today's world would find it impossible not to get offended and humiliated by everything. Hence my starfish analogy is pretty slick really. Do keep up man. It's all about the levels innit.

Do we know if the black man was actually offended, or was someone offended on his behalf?

I don't think either is required for a successful prosecution. I believe Gascoigne was charged under s5 of the Public Order Act 1986. http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWHC/Admin/2013/3267.html is an interesting read on what constitutes threatening, abusive and disorderly according to that Act.

Plus it's a load of bollocks.

Dear, black dudes.

Why get upset when your boss (white dude) slings an anachronistic racial slur (if you'll excuse the pleonasm) at you in front of a room full of mainly white dudes. What did you expect when you decided to work for an ex footballer?

Don't you understand casual racism is a part of football banter?

John Barnes didn't cry when we threw bananas at him, Daniel Alves even ate a banana when he had one thrown at him - role-play see, he joined in the fun. Learn to laugh along at your blackness in a room full of bevvied up footy fans. It's only Bantz. When you laugh we can see you, innit. Thats because the  room is dark you see. And you are black. Your teeth are white. So we can see you when you smile... unless you have banana all over your teeth!!!!!! (See racial comedy is lol (laugh out loud) funny. Comedy, Bantz, nothing more. Just a room full of white dudes havin a laff)

Gazza is a legend. And if a much loved mentally ill,  ex alcoholic wife beater makes fun of your blackness for lolz you should play along, like daniel alves did - he pretended to be a monkey by eating a banana we threw at him. This is funny because monkeys eat bananas in the wild. And they look like black people and come from africa. Like black people who also come from africa. Banter, see.

Anyway, Gazza cried at a world cup for this country. What has John Barnes ever done for England? Has a black man ever cried for his country, eh eh?

Yours, John Bull

You can't even write racial abuse in excrement on someone's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat.

This was targeted abuse aimed at an individual.

How is putting the boot in to somebody obviously fragile different to putting the boot in to somebody obviously black?

I don't give a shit how good he was at football, the guy's a twat. He's fragile through his own pathetic doing and deserves to have the book thrown at him.

In my eyes......

Thats the thing about these so called minorities. a lot of them are professional minorities employed - probably - by the communist BBC or maoist guardian. they are paid to be black and read Things Written By Clarkson so they can be offended.

they aren't even minorities anymore. have you been to luton recently? you have to wade through thousands of these professional minorities before meeting a native unemployed ukip voter, thousands.

they cant even be offended in the privacy of their own mosques. they have to tell everyone every time they are spat at [bantz] or called raghead [lolz]

whatever happened to the stoic glory days of the blitz? when our enemies where honourable white folk and we showed how resilient we were by looting bombed out houses and robbing jewellry off our dead neighbours fingers. the real east end, gathering around the old aunt johanna  [ryhming slang] to sing bawdy songs. not selling curry and listening to reggae.

yours,

John Bull

I imagine nobody disagrees that Gazza has been a berk and it's all a bit uncomfortable like when your elderly relative says something inappropriate.  Isn't the question whether this is something that should end in court in a sensible society as opposed to being solved with a sincere apology?

Three reasons for a case to go to court and an offender to be sentenced.

Punishment: Don't think it's relevant in this case. The humiliation of the whole case is punishment enough for Gazza I think.

Rehabilitation: I suppose slightly relevant. Although it could be argued Gazza is a lost cause. Doubt he'll ever make a racist joke in public again though.

Deterrent: Absolutely relevant. If this court case stops people acting in this very offensive manner in the future, it was worth the effort and expense of prosecuting Paul Gascoigne IMO.

Points taken.  But do you think Gazza had genuine malice towards this bloke as opposed to being a bit thick?  Can the court distinguish?  Should the CPS be prosecuting people for just being ignorant?

I doubt very much Gazza had any malice towards the fella he made the joke about. And I also doubt this case would have been brought if it was a bloke in pub making the same joke to a group of friends.

But that's not really the point.

It's just that Gazza is very famous and because of that the case gets maximum publicity and maybe therefore it will cause some people to think twice about making similar comments.

Is that fair to Gazza? Maybe not. But he was found guilty, so he did commit the crime for which he was accused.

The price of fame I suppose.
